Cardioprotection by gene therapy: A review paper on behalf of the Working Group on Drug Cardiotoxicity and Cardioprotection of the Italian Society of…
2015
Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Ischemic pre-, post-, and remote conditionings trigger endogenous cardioprotection that renders the heart resistant to ischemic-reperfusion injury (IRI). Mimicking endogenous cardioprotection by modulating genes involved in cardioprotective signal transduction provides an opportunity to reproduce endogenous cardioprotection with better possibilities of translation into the clinical setting. Genes and signaling pathways by which conditioning maneuvers exert their effects on the heart are partially understood. This is due to the targeted approach that allowed identifying one or a few genes associated with IRI and cardioprote…
Towards the quantitative and physically-based interpretation of solar-induced vegetation fluorescence retrieved from global imaging
2021
Due to emerging high spectral resolution, remote sensing techniques and ongoing developments to retrieve the spectrally resolved vegetation fluorescence spectrum from several scales, the light reactions of photosynthesis are receiving a boost of attention for the monitoring of the Earth's carbon balance. Sensor-retrieved vegetation fluorescence (from leaf, tower, airborne or satellite scale) originating from the excited antenna chlorophyll a molecule has become a new quantitative biophysical vegetation parameter retrievable from space using global imaging techniques. However, to retrieve the actual quantum efficiencies, and hence a true photosynthetic status of the observed vegetation, all …
How neurophysiological measures can be used to enhance the evaluation of remote tower solutions
2019
New solutions in operational environments are often, among objective measurements, evaluated by using subjective assessment and judgment from experts. Anyhow, it has been demonstrated that subjective measures suffer from poor resolution due to a high intra and inter-operator variability. Also, performance measures, if available, could provide just partial information, since an operator could achieve the same performance but experiencing a different workload. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate: (i) the higher resolution of neurophysiological measures in comparison to subjective ones; and (ii) how the simultaneous employment of neurophysiological measures and behavioral ones could allow a…
Advancing Deep Learning for Earth Sciences: From Hybrid Modeling to Interpretability
2020
Machine learning and deep learning in particular have made a huge impact in many fields of science and engineering. In the last decade, advanced deep learning methods have been developed and applied to remote sensing and geoscientific data problems extensively. Applications on classification and parameter retrieval are making a difference: methods are very accurate, can handle large amounts of data, and can deal with spatial and temporal data structures efficiently. Nevertheless, several important challenges need still to be addressed. First, current standard deep architectures cannot deal with long-range dependencies so distant driving processes (in space or time) are not captured, and the…
FPGA/LST-SW Encryption Module Implementation for Satellite Remote Sensing Secure Systems
2020
The need for security of data transmitted from satellites to the ground has increased. Therefore, the need for secure onboard systems is in great demand, particularly in satellite remote sensing missions. This paper describes an approach for a secure Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) implementation of the Land Surface Temperature Split Window (LST-SW) algorithm, with objective to meat real-time requirements, area optimization and achieved higher Throughput goals to be sufficient for a secure remote sensing satellite applications and missions. The system is designed using VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) in a Highlevel design method. The experimental results demonstrate that th…
Cloud screening and multitemporal unmixing of MERIS FR data
2007
The operational use of MERIS images can be hampered by the presence of clouds. This work presents a cloud screening algorithm that takes advantage of the high spectral and radiometric resolutions of MERIS and the specific location of some of its bands to increase the cloud detection accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides a per-pixel probabilistic map of cloud abundance rather than a binary cloud presence flag. In order to test the proposed algorithm we propose a cloud screening validation method based on temporal series. In addition, we evaluate the impact of the cloud screening in a multitemporal unmixing application, where a temporal series of MERIS FR images acquired over Th…
Sustainable production and consumption in remote working conditions due to COVID-19 lockdown in Italy: An environmental and user acceptance investiga…
2021
Abstract In response to the disruptive changes brought upon our society by the COVID-19 pandemic, most work activities and service providers had to resort to remote working. This is credited to reduce emissions for transportation, however the role of forced confinement within dwellings, especially if not designed for hosting working stations, deserves to be properly evaluated in terms of both user acceptance and long-term environmental impact. In this work, a dedicated survey campaign is used for investigating the potential pros and cons of remote working. In more detail, logistic regression and generalized linear models are used for capturing the effect of several independent variables on …
Optical remote sensing and the retrieval of terrestrial vegetation bio-geophysical properties – A review
2015
Abstract: Forthcoming superspectral satellite missions dedicated to land monitoring, as well as planned imaging spectrometers, will unleash an unprecedented data stream. The processing requirements for such large data streams involve processing techniques enabling the spatio-temporally explicit quantification of vegetation properties. Typically retrieval must be accurate, robust and fast. Hence, there is a strict requirement to identify next-generation bio-geophysical variable retrieval algorithms which can be molded into an operational processing chain. This paper offers a review of state-of-the-art retrieval methods for quantitative terrestrial bio-geophysical variable extraction using op…
Efficiency of a digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) method for monitoring the surface velocity of hyper-concentrated flows
2018
Digital particle image velocimetry records high resolution images and allows the identification of the position of points in different time instants. This paper explores the efficiency of the digital image-technique for remote monitoring of surface velocity and discharge measurement in hyper-concentrated flow by the way of laboratory experiment. One of the challenges in the application of the image-technique is the evaluation of the error in estimating surface velocity. The error quantification is complex because it depends on many factors characterizing either the experimental conditions or/and the processing algorithm. In the present work, attention is devoted to the estimation error due …
Performance of Spectral Fitting Methods for vegetation fluorescence quantification
2010
The Fraunhofer Line Discriminator (FLD) principle has long been considered as the reference method to quantify solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (F) from passive remote sensing measurements. Recently, alternative retrieval algorithms based on the spectral fitting of hyperspectral radiance observations, Spectral Fitting Methods (SFMs), have been proposed. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the performance of such algorithms and to provide relevant information regarding their use. FLD and SFMs were used to estimate F starting from Top Of Canopy (TOC) fluxes at very high spectral resolution (0.12 nm) and sampling interval (0.1 nm), exploiting the O2-B (687.0 nm) and O2-A (760.6 …
