Advanced energetics of a Multiple Effects Evaporation (MEE) desalination plant Part I: 2nd principle analysis by a zooming representation at single-e…

2010

This paper represents the Part I of a paper in two parts, aimed at proposing a 2nd principle and thermoeconomic analysis for a Multiple Effects Evaporation (MEE) process and discussing solutions for optimization and energy saving. After a brief analysis of the thermochemical fundamentals of desalination, the minimum theoretical work of separation is introduced to represent a reference condition for the assessment of plants' efficiency. A forward feed MEE configuration is then analysed, abandoning the conventional approach to “at overall plant-level”-analysis; a zooming strategy, based on focusing on the physical model of a generic stage (i.e. effect), is preferred to best recognize the marg…

Mimicking biological mechanisms for sensory information fusion

2013

Current Artificial Intelligence systems are bound to become increasingly interconnected to their surrounding environment in the view of the newly rising Ambient Intelligence (AmI) perspective. In this paper, we present a comprehensive AmI framework for performing fusion of raw data, perceived by sensors of different nature, in order to extract higher-level information according to a model structured so as to resemble the perceptual signal processing occurring in the human nervous system. Following the guidelines of the greater BICA challenge, we selected the specific task of user presence detection in a locality of the system as a representative application clarifying the potentialities of …

Introducing automated reasoning in network management

2004

This paper proposes the adoption of Artificial Intelligence techniques in the field of network management and moni toring. In order to allow automated reasoning on network ing topics, we constructed an accurate ontological model capable of fitting as more as possible networking concepts. The thoroughly representation of the domain knowledge is used by a Logical Reasoner, which is an expert system ca pable of performing management tasks typically executed by human experts. The Logical Reasoner is integrated in a distributed multi-agent architecture for network manage ment, which exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the Situation Calculus formalism to provide a powerful sys tem capa…

Inferring Business Rules from Natural Language Expressions

2014

This paper proposes a mapping technique for automatically translating rules expressed in a format based on natural language, i.e. Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard, into production rules that can be executed by a computer (i.e. Rule engine). The proposed approach achieves a twofold purpose: on the one hand non IT skilled people (i.e. Domain expert) can effectively focus on business rules definition by using statements in natural language, and on the other hand the IT staff will have to manage business rules in a format ready to be executed by a rule engine. The main goal is to overcome some weaknesses in the software development process that could produce i…

Experiences with CiceRobot, a Museum Guide Cognitive Robot

2005

The paper describes CiceRobot, a robot based on a cognitive architecture for robot vision and action. The aim of the architecture is to integrate visual perception and actions with knowledge representation, in order to let the robot to generate a deep inner understanding of its environment. The principled integration of perception, action and of symbolic knowledge is based on the introduction of an intermediate representation based on Gardenfors conceptual spaces. The architecture has been tested on a RWI B21 autonomous robot on tasks related with guided tours in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. Experimental results are presented.

Composition of SIFT features for robust image representation

2010

In this paper we propose a novel feature based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm1 for the robust representation of local visual contents. SIFT features have raised much interest for their power of description of visual content characterizing punctual information against variation of luminance and change of viewpoint and they are very useful to capture local information. For a single image hundreds of keypoints are found and they are particularly suitable for tasks dealing with image registration or image matching. In this work we stretched the spatial coverage of descriptors creating a novel feature as composition of keypoints present in an image region while maintaining…

Design for invention: a framework for identifying emerging design–prior art conflict

2018

The increasing complexity of patented mechanical designs means that their novelty and inventive steps increasingly rely on interacting geometric features and how they contribute to device functions. These features and interactions are normally incorporated in patents through clear patent claims. However, patents can be difficult to interpret and understand for designers due to their legal terminologies. This suggests there is a need for greater awareness of relevant prior art amongst designers in terms of avoiding potential conflict. This paper presents a framework that helps designers obtain insight on relevant prior art and enables emerging design–prior art comparison. The framework mainl…

3D skeleton-based human action classification: A survey

2016

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of works on human action classification from depth sequences. These works generally present methods and/or feature representations for the classification of actions from sequences of 3D locations of human body joints and/or other sources of data, such as depth maps and RGB videos. This survey highlights motivations and challenges of this very recent research area by presenting technologies and approaches for 3D skeleton-based action classification. The work focuses on aspects such as data pre-processing, publicly available benchmarks and commonly used accuracy measurements. Furthermore, this survey introduces a categorization of the most recent…

An Innovative Statistical Tool for Automatic OWL-ERD Alignment

2016

Aligning two representations of the same domain with different expressiveness is a crucial topic in nowadays semantic web and big data research. OWL ontologies and Entity Relation Diagrams are the most widespread representations whose alignment allows for semantic data access via ontology interface, and ontology storing techniques. The term ""alignment" encompasses three different processes: OWL-to-ERD and ERD-to-OWL transformation, and OWL-ERD mapping. In this paper an innovative statistical tool is presented to accomplish all the three aspects of the alignment. The main idea relies on the use of a HMM to estimate the most likely ERD sentence that is stated in a suitable grammar, and corre…

A Modular Architecture for Adaptive ChatBots

2011

We illustrate an architecture for a conversational agent based on a modular knowledge representation. This solution provides intelligent conversational agents with a dynamic and flexible behavior. The modularity of the architecture allows a concurrent and synergic use of different techniques, making it possible to use the most adequate methodology for the management of a specific characteristic of the domain, of the dialogue, or of the user behavior. We show the implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype: a set of modules exploiting different knowledge representation techniques and capable to differently manage conversation features has been developed. Each module is automatically trigg…
