Resolution improvements in integral microscopy with Fourier plane recording

Abstract: Integral microscopes (IMic) have been recently developed in order to capture the spatial and the angular information of 3D microscopic samples with a single exposure. Computational post-processing of this information permits to carry out a 3D reconstruction of the sample. By applying conventional algorithms, both depth and also view reconstructions are possible. However, the main drawback of IMic is that the resolution of the reconstructed images is low and axially heterogeneous. Filter performance parameters for vectorial high-aperture wave fields.

Performance parameters have been presented that can be used to compare the focusing performance of different optical systems, including the effect of pupil filters. These were originally given for the paraxial case and recently extended to the high-aperture scalar regime. We generalize these parameters to the full vectorial case for an aplanatic optical system illuminated by a plane-polarized wave. The behavior of different optical systems is compared.

Accretion dynamics in the formation of young stars is still a matter of debate because of limitations in observations and modeling. Through scaled laboratory experiments of collimated plasma accretion onto a solid in the presence of a magnetic field, we open a first window on this phenomenon by tracking, with spatial and temporal resolution, the dynamics of the system and simultaneously measuring multiband emissions. We observe in these experiments that matter, upon impact, is ejected laterally from the solid surface and then refocused by the magnetic field toward the incoming stream. Monolithic focused reference beam x-ray holography

Fourier transform holography is a highly efficient and robust imaging method, suitable for single-shot imaging at coherent X-ray sources. In its common implementation, the image contrast is limited by the reference signal generated by a small pinhole aperture. Increased pinhole diameters improve the signal, whereas the resolution is diminished. Here we report a new concept to decouple the spatial resolution from the image contrast by employing a Fresnel zone plate to provide the reference beam. Observability of γ-ray pulsars

PULSARS seem to play a major role as γ-ray emitters. Of the 13 objects listed in the first COS B catalogue1 the two brightest, CG185-5 and CG263-2, have been identified with the Crab (PSR0531+21) and Vela (PSR0833–;45) pulsars respectively. This privileged role of pulsars as identified γ-ray sources could be simply related to observational reasons: in fact, because of the poor angular resolution intrinsic to the γ-ray telescopes, the only possibility of identification for individual sources is the time structure of the emission, and the periodical pattern of pulsars is particularly suited. Dissipative rogue wave generation from a mode-locked fiber laser experiment

Rare events of extremely high optical intensity are experimentally recorded at the output of a mode-locked fiber laser operating in a chaotic multiple-pulse regime. These fluctuations result from ceaseless nonlinear interactions between pulses.

Silicon as an Unconventional Detector in Positron Emission Tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a widely used technique in medical imaging and in studying small animal models of human disease. In the conventional approach, the 511 keV annihilation photons emitted from a patient or small animal are detected by a ring of scintillators such as LYSO read out by arrays of photodetectors. Although this has been a successful in achieving ~5mm FWHM spatial resolution in human studies and ~1mm resolution in dedicated small animal instruments, there is interest in significantly improving these figures. The horizontal drift chambers for the focal plane proton-polarimeter of the 3-spectrometer setup at MAMI

Abstract Large-area horizontal drift chambers have been built for use in a proton polarimeter. A gas mixture of 20% argon and 80% ethane is used. The left–right assignment is achieved by measuring the difference of the signals induced on neighboring potential wires. A spatial resolution of 300 μm is achieved.

Searching for localized cosmic particle sources with an unbinned maximum likelihood approach

Abstract An unbinned method to search for localized cosmic particle sources is presented. The expected source shape, the measured background shape, and the estimated angular resolution of individual tracks are used to construct a likelihood function. Estimates of the flux, the position and—in particular—the significance of a source can be readily obtained. A full confidence belt construction to deduce flux limits is presented. General statistical issues when searching for sources of unknown position are discussed.

A cylindrical GEM detector with analog readout for the BESIII experiment

Abstract A cylindrical GEM detector with analog readout is under development for the upgrade of the Inner Tracker of the BESIII experiment at IHEP (Beijing). The new detector will match the requirements for momentum resolution ( σ pt / p t ~ 0.5 % at 1 GeV) and radial resolution ( σ xy ~ 120 μ m ) of the existing drift chamber and will improve significantly the spatial resolution along the beam direction ( σ z ~ 150 μ m ) with very small material budget (less than 1.5% of X 0 ).
