A time-differential Mössbauer emission spectrometer with high efficiency and high time resolution

A high-efficiency, high rate-capability, computer-based measuring setup for Time-Differential Mossbauer Spectroscopy was constructed. Applying NaI(Tl) and plastic scintillators for the detection of the 14.4 keV and 122 keV γ-radiation respectively, a superior timing (2, 3 ns FWHM) was achieved by a “fast-fast-ultra fast” timing method developed for that purpose.

Investigations on the photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) counters

Abstract The photoelectron conversion efficiency of NaI(Tl) detectors has been measured by counting single photoelectron pulses of the detector output pulse train on a very fast storage oscilloscope. This result is compared with those obtained by the measurement of the achievable time resolution using the first photoelectron triggering technique.

Design criteria for multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays with inclined columns

Multi-layered scintillating fibre arrays read-out are commonly used as high resolution charged particle hodoscopes. Fibres of a column along the geometrical trajectory of incident particles are typically grouped to one pixel of a multi-channel read-out device. In some applications the incident particles will cross the detection plane with large angles w.r.t. the normal to the layers. Then, the packing of the fibres needs to be adapted to the incident particles and the columns need to be inclined. A device to measure the effects of strong magnetic fields on the image resolution of PET scanners

Abstract Very high resolution images can be achieved in small animal PET systems utilizing solid state silicon pad detectors. As these systems approach sub-millimeter resolutions, the range of the positron is becoming the dominant contribution to image blur. The size of the positron range effect depends on the initial positron energy and hence the radioactive tracer used. For higher energy positron emitters, such as Ga 68 and Tc 94 m , which are gaining importance in small animal studies, the width of the annihilation point distribution dominates the spatial resolution. A Tracking and Timing (t-and-t) Front-end Electronics For Rpc Detectors

Abstract The availability of a detector such as an RPC (resistive plate counter) opens new possibility on the future experiments for accelerator and non-accelerator physics. The main advantage consists on the possibility to obtain accurate tracking and timing with a low-cost detector and electronics. We report results on time resolution, signal transmission on long strips, efficiency and maintenance. A possible front-end electronics able to give tracking and timing information on each input channel operating in free-running mode will be illustrated toghether to the preliminary tests performed.

Dependency of Energy-, Position- and Depth of Interaction Resolution on Scintillation Crystal Coating and Geometry

Options for optimizing the energy and spatial resolution of gamma-ray imaging detectors based on thick, monolithic crystals shaped like flat-topped pyramids were studied. Monte Carlo simulations were made of the scintillation light transport for evaluating the effect of four parameters on the energy resolution, the spatial resolutions, and the depth of interaction (DOI) resolution of the gamma-ray imaging detector. Maximum likelihood positioning for gamma-ray imaging detectors with depth of interaction measurement

Abstract The center of gravity algorithm leads to strong artifacts for gamma-ray imaging detectors that are based on monolithic scintillation crystals and position sensitive photo-detectors. This is a consequence of using the centroids as position estimates. The fact that charge division circuits can also be used to compute the standard deviation of the scintillation light distribution opens a way out of this drawback. A novel Si strip array to investigate reaction and decay mechanisms

Abstract The performance of a novel set-up of double-sided silicon micro-strip detectors (DSSD) developed for the GSI-R3B project (reaction studies with relativistic radioactive beams) is presented. The set-up was used in an experiment aimed at measuring the two-proton decay of 19 Mg. This experiment required to record simultaneously protons and the residual nuclei with good position and energy resolution. Our experimental results show that both protons and heavy ions ranging from Z  = 2 up to Z  = 12 can be identified with good signal-to-noise ratio and high energy and spatial resolution. Cryogenic operation of silicon detectors

This paper reports on measurements at cryogenic temperatures of a silicon microstrip detector irradiated with 24 GeV protons to a #uence of 3.5]1014 p/cm2 and of a p}n junction diode detector irradiated to a similar #uence. At temperatures below 130 K a recovery of charge collection e$ciency and resolution is observed. Under reverse bias conditions this recovery degrades in time towards some saturated value.
