Louisa S. McCord's Caius Gracchus: A Transatlantic Southern Literary Response to 1848 European Revolutions

2016

Louisa S. McCord is the most important female intellectual in the antebellum South and one of its most recognized voices, even if her name rarely appears in studies not directly related to her region. McCord has a parallel, according to Mary Kelley, in Margaret Fuller, the relevant prewar Northern intellectual and essayist. From contrasting ideological positions, both left testimony of their interest in constructing a model of womanhood, capable of facing the contingencies of their times. Born in one of the most influential families of South Carolina, McCord produced a phenomenal synthesis of the conservative political, economic and religious arguments accepted in her times and managed to t…

Vers une historiographie des politiques des traductions en Belgique durant la période française

2014

The language policy of the French Revolution is known today especially for the imposition of the national language and the oppression of dialects and regional languages in France. This pilot study focuses on a less-known phenomenon of that period: translation policy. From 1790 on, several decrees stipulated the translation of national laws and decrees into the regional languages of France and some languages of other European countries. We will illustrate this translation policy focusing on translations of political and administrative texts from French into Flemish in Belgium (which was annexed by the French Republic in 1795 and remained French until the end of the Napoleonic era). We will n…

Survival of the Weakest: Why the West Rules

2022

We study a model of institutions that evolve through conflict. We find that one of three configurations can emerge: an extractive hegemony, a balance of power between extrac-tive societies or a balance of power between inclusive societies -the latter being most conducive to innovation. As extractive societies are assumed to have an advantage in head to head confrontations we refer to this latter possibility as the survival of the weakest. Our contention is that the reason that the West "rules" can be traced back to two events both taking place in China: the invention of the cannon, which made possible the survival of the weakest in Europe; and the arrival of Genghis Khan, which led to the s…

Eulerian models of the rotating flexible wheelset for high frequency railway dynamics

2019

Abstract In this paper three formulations based on an Eulerian approach are presented to obtain the dynamic response of an elastic solid of revolution, which rotates around its main axis at constant angular velocity. The formulations are especially suitable for the study of the interaction of a solid with a non-rotating structure, such as occurs in the coupled dynamics of a railway wheelset with the track. With respect to previous publications that may adopt similar hypotheses, this paper proposes more compact formulations and eliminates certain numerical problems associated with the presence of second-order derivatives with respect to the spatial coordinates. Three different models are dev…

Dupin cyclide blends between non-natural quadrics of revolution and concrete shape modeling applications

2014

Abstract In this work, we focus on the blending of two quadrics of revolution by two patches of Dupin cyclides. We propose an algorithm for the blending of non-natural quadrics of revolution by decomposing the blending operation into two complementary sub-blendings, each of which is a Dupin cyclide-based blending between one of the two quadrics and a circular cylinder, thus enabling the direct computation of the two Dupin cyclide patches and offering better flexibility for shape composition. Our approach uses rational quadric Bezier curves to model the relevant arcs of the principal circles of Dupin cyclides. It is quite general and we have successfully used it for the blending of several n…

Technology and Architectural Heritage: Dynamic Connections

2019

Technological aspects strongly characterise the built environment in both material and immaterial dimensions. The architectural heritage (the built environment that has acquired cultural meanings, without prejudice regarding the age and the scale of observation) offers a peculiar point of view for dealing with this issue. This paper outlines the dynamic connections between technology, the whole idea of architectural heritage and the approaches to intervention. A focus is placed on four main theoretical aspects, the effects of which are also significant on the practical field: the distance from contemporaneity; the concept of Time; reliable conservation; sustainability. The technological evo…
