Symbiotic N2 fixation activity in relation to C economy of Pisum sativum L. as a function of plant phenology

The relationships between symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) activity and C fluxes were investigated in pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv. Baccara) using simultaneous 13 C and 15 N labelling. Analysis of the dynamics of labelled CO 2 efflux from the nodulated roots allowed the different components associated with SNF activity to be calculated, together with root and nodule synthetic and maintenance processes. The carbon costs for the synthesis of roots and nodules were similar and decreased with time. Carbon lost by turnover, associated with maintenance processes, decreased with time for nodules while it increased in the roots. Nodule turnover remained higher than root turnover until flowering…

Influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonisation on cadmium induced Medicago truncatula root isoflavonoid accumulation.

Cadmium is a serious environmental pollution threats to the planet. Its accumulation in plants affects many cellular functions, resulting in growth and development inhibition, whose mechanisms are not fully understood. However, some fungi forming arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis with the majority of plant species have the capacity to buffer the deleterious effect of this heavy metal. Variations in the concentrations of macro- and trace elements in two grasses and in the rhizosphere soil during a day

The aim of the research was to study short-term variations in concentrations of 17 elements in two widely distributed natural plant species (couch grass and plantain) and in the rhizosphere soil of the plants. The plant and soil samples were collected in a field from a small site over a daytime. In the course of the day, the variations of the total amounts of C, N, and H in the rhizosphere soil were rather marked and different for the soils taken from roots of plantain and couch grass. ITS region of the rDNA of Pythium rhizosaccharum sp. nov. isolated from sugarcane roots: taxonomy and comparison with related species.

Pythium rhizosaccharum (F-1244) was isolated from soil samples taken in the rhizosphere of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) in the north-eastern India. This species is characterized by its smooth-walled, spherical sporangia and rarely formed sexual structures. When formed, the antheridial branches wrap around the oogonia and soon disappear after fertilization. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of its rDNA is comprised of 904 bases. The taxonomical description of this new species and its comparison with related species are given here, together with the nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 and ITS2, and the 5.8S gene of its ribosomal nuclear DNA.

Posterior meniscal root repair: a biomechanical comparison between human and porcine menisci

The aim of the present study was to compare the biomechanical characteristics of posterior meniscal root repair of porcine and human menisci. Methods. In vitro biomechanical testing was performed using 12 porcine menisci and 12 human menisci. All menisci were sectioned at the midpoint of their circumference and mounted on an electro-mechanic testing machine. The posterior root was sutured with three single stitches using a no. 2 non-absorbable suture. All specimens were subjected to cyclic axial loading followed by load-to-failure testing. ABSTRACT Background:: The purpose of our study is to compare the accuracy of two electronic apex locators (EALs) in the same teeth in vivo: Root ZX and Dentaport Root-ZX. Methods and Materials: Twenty-two adult patients, ages 36-71. Thirty single-rooted teeth with one canal that were scheduled for extraction for prosthetic or orthodontic reasons were used. Root canal morphology and configuration of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-CT.

The aim of this study was to investigate the root canal configuration, accessory canals and number of main foramina of 123 maxillary second molars by means of micro-computed tomography. The teeth were scanned and reproduced with 3D software imaging. The root canal configuration and number of main foramina were evaluated by means of a four-digit system. The morphological complexity of human maxillary second molars is depicted by the number of accessory and connecting canals. The most frequently observed root canal configurations in the mesiobuccal root were 2-2-2/2 (19.5%), 2-2-1/1 (14.6%) and 2-1-1/1 (13.0%). We examined whether peroxidase activity in cutting bases and leaves and starch content in cutting bases can be used as rooting phase markers in the elepidote rhododendron cv. 'Babites Baltais' (Rhododendron L.). Changes in peroxidase activity in cutting leaves and bases, as well as starch content in cutting bases, were determined in relation to anatomical stages of rhizogenesis in leaf bud cuttings treated with 1% indole-3-butyric acid (IBA+) or without IBA (IBA–). Aims: The molecular diversity of 25 strains of rhizobia, isolated in Sicily from root nodules of the Mediterranean shrubby legume Spanish broom (Spartium junceum L.), is presented in relation to the known rhizobial reference strains. Methods and Results: Our approach to the study of the S. junceum rhizobial diversity combined the information given by the 16S and the intergenic spacer (IGS) 16S–23S rDNA polymorphic region by obtaining them in a single polymerase chain reaction (PCR) step.
