Multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies

International audience; This work studies multiscale analyses and characterizations of surface topographies from the engineering and scientific literature with an emphasis on production engineering research and design. It highlights methods that provide strong correlations between topographies and performance or topographies and processes, and methods that can confidently discriminate topographies that were processed or that perform differently. These methods have commonalities in geometric characterizations at certain scales, which are observable with statistics and measurements. Optimization of the Surface Roughness Equation obtained by Al7136 End-Milling

The aim of this paper is to optimize the regression equation of the surface roughness obtained by 7136 aluminium alloy machined by end-milling process. The surface roughness is dependent on certain process parameters, which can vary, causing in this way variations of the surface quality. The research method used in this paper is the experiment and the Taguchi design of experiment. The experiment was performed using an experimental stand, in which every step to get the purpose, is presented. The measurements were made using a portable surface roughness tester. Hybrid approach to surface roughness evaluation in multistage machining processes

Abstract An assessment of surface quality in turned, ground and honed specimens is made by means of a computer-based processing of digitised surface profiles. Three different methods of surface finish characterisation, i.e. statistical, fractal and neural network-based approaches are examined and compared. Correlations between some representative roughness parameters and the fractal dimension (D) values estimated were found. Grain size, stress and surface roughness

In this article, we report molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the formation of roughness at the surface of strained polycrystalline aluminum samples at 300 K. The computed roughness increases as a function of applied strain but does not follow a linear law for all applied strains. A linear relationship with a small slope is obtained in the elastic domain. Then, the roughness increases rapidly with the applied strain in the plastic domain studied. Moreover, the surface roughness increases as a function of grain size (between 5 and 20 nm) in the plastic domain (<6%).

Comparison of leaf surface roughness analysis methods by sensitivity to noise analysis

International audience; Surface roughness is of great interest in agricultural spraying because it is used to characterise leaf surface wettability to predict the behaviour of droplets on a leaf surface. In recent years, the use of texture analysis to estimate surface roughness has emerged. In this paper we propose to estimate leaf surface roughness by using an optimisation of the Generalized Fourier Descriptors method. This approach is then compared with two other standard methods in the literature, one based on grey level intensity variation and the other on wavelet decomposition. Method of Discrimination of Surface Fractality

Abstract A simple method for the discrimination of surface fractality is proposed. This method is based on the comparison of the nitrogen adsorption isotherm on a given sample with the "standard" isotherm on a smooth surface. The proposed comparative method makes it possible to determine the lower limit of the scale range of surface fractality. A thermodynamic method is recommended as a complement to fractal analysis in the scale range of about 10-1000 A. The results of the investigation of surface roughness are presented with examples of typical samples of silica gels, porous glasses, apatite, and coal.

This paper evaluates the retrieval of soil moisture in the top 5-cm layer at 3-km spatial resolution using L-band dual-copolarized Soil Moisture Active–Passive (SMAP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that mapped the globe every three days from mid-April to early July, 2015. Surface soil moisture retrievals using radar observations have been challenging in the past due to complicating factors of surface roughness and vegetation scattering.
