Prvi nalazi dinoflagelata roda Dicroerisma (Actiniscales, Dinophyceae) na Sredozemnom moru
2011
This study is the first to describe and illustrate the dinoflagellate genus Dicroerisma in the Mediterranean Sea. Twenty individuals ascribed to Dicroerisma psilonereiella were encountered. The highest abundance (12 cells L-1) was recorded in the Balearic Sea at 50 m depth. Other specimens were found in subsurface waters (>75 m depth, with some records at 250 m depth) in the Ionian and Levantine Basin. These findings suggest that Dicroerisma is a widespread genus and its presence has gone unnoticed due to its small size, deep water distribution and misidentification with other gymnodinioid cells.
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF DENDROPOMA CRISTATUM (MOLLUSCA, GASTROPODA) ADULT BIOMASS ON A VERMETID REEF
2023
A spatial characterization of Dendropoma cristatum biomass was carried out on a Vermetid reef in north-western Sicily. Biomass distribution of adult specimens is not homogenous in the different areas of the reef, with an increasing trend from the inner edge to the outer edge, while the central pool supports intermediate values of vermetid biomass. Considering the entire reef area, the cuvette has the highest Dendropoma biomasses of the bioconstruction, even if the highest surface-biomass ratio is found in the outer edege.
Impact of Manaus City on the Amazon Green Ocean atmosphere: Ozone production, precursor sensitivity and aerosol load
2010
As a contribution to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia – Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment (LBA-CLAIRE-2001) field campaign in the heart of the Amazon Basin, we analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of the urban plume of Manaus City during the wet-to-dry season transition period in July 2001. During the flights, we performed vertical stacks of crosswind transects in the urban outflow downwind of Manaus City, measuring a comprehensive set of trace constituents including O3, NO, NO2, CO, VOC, CO2, and H2O. Aerosol loads were characterized by concentrations of total aerosol number (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and by light scattering proper…
The importance of dead seagrass (Posidonia oceanica)matte as a biogeochemical sink
2022
We assessed the potential of dead seagrass Posidonia oceanica matte to act as a biogeochemical sink and provide a coherent archive of environmental change in a degraded area of the Mediterranean Sea (Augusta Bay, Italy). Change in sediment properties (dry bulk density, grain size), concentration of elements (Corg, Cinorg, N, Hg) and stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ 15N) with sediment depth were measured in dead P. oceanica matte and unvegetated (bare) sediments in the polluted area, and an adjacent P. oceanica meadow. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed a clear clustering by habitat, which explained 72% of variability in our samples and was driven mainly by the accumulation of N and H…
Taking Online Search Queries as an Indicator of the Public Agenda
2016
Recently, several studies suggested that the amount of online search queries can be used as an indicator of the public agenda. Based on former research by the authors, this article discusses the role of public uncertainty as another factor influencing search queries. Therefore, the influence of media coverage on Wikipedia searches concerning two issues is compared: one issue with uncertainty (the Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli [EHEC] epidemic), and one without uncertainty (unemployment). Analyses show much stronger correlations in the case of EHEC, which suggests that online search behavior may especially be used as an indicator of the public agenda in case public uncertainty exists.
Multi-functional Protein Clustering in PPI Networks
2008
Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) networks contain valuable information for the isolation of groups of proteins that participate in the same biological function. Many proteins play different roles in the cell by taking part in several processes, but isolating the different processes in which a protein is involved is often a difficult task. In this paper we present a method based on a greedy local search technique to detect functional modules in PPI graphs. The approach is conceived as a generalization of the algorithm PINCoC to generate overlapping clusters of the interaction graph in input. Due to this peculiarity, multi-facets proteins are allowed to belong to different groups correspondi…
A Latent Class Analysis of Spanish Travelers’ Mobile Internet Usage in Travel Planning and Execution
2014
A study of 476 Spanish travelers found mixed interest and use for the many travel-related mobile internet services that are involved in planning and executing a trip. The findings indicate that these Spanish respondents can be classified into four segments based on the timing of using mobile apps for over a dozen activities involved in travel planning and execution: Savvies, Planners, Opportunists, and Low-techs. Each segment exhibits distinct patterns of mobile internet services usage. Savvies tend to be heavy mobile device users both before and during their trip, while Planners make heavy use of mobile devices in advance of but not during their trip. The Opportunists show a pattern oppos…
Mobile Electronic Commerce: Emerging Issues
2000
There are many definitions for Mobile Electronic Commerce (M-Commerce). We define M-Commerce as any type of transaction of an economic value having at least at one end a mobile terminal and thus using the mobile telecommunications network. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) plays an important role in m-commerce by optimizing Internet standards for the constraints of the wireless environment and thus bridging the gap between Internet and mobile world. Mobile Network Operators can play a major role in m-commerce by being strategically positioned between customers and content/service providers. In this paper we investigate the roles the operator can play in m-commerce and discuss respecti…
Multi-dimensional pattern matching with dimensional wildcards
1995
We introduce a new multi-dimensional pattern matching problem, which is a natural generalization of the on-line search in string matching. We are given a text matrix A[1: n1, ..., 1:n d ] of size N= n1×n2×...×n d , which we may preprocess. Then, we are given, online, an r-dimensional pattern matrix B[1:m1,...,1:m r ] of size M= m1×m2×...×m r , with 1≤r≤d. We would like to know whether B*=B*[*, 1:m1,*, ...,1: mr, *] occurs in A, where * is a dimensional wildcard such that B* is any d-dimensional matrix having size 1 × ... × m1×...1×m r ×...1 and containing the same elements as B. Notice that there might be (d/r)≤2d occurrences of B* for each position of A. We give CRCW-PRAM algorithms for pr…
Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes in International Law: The Special Case of the Mediterranean Area
1997
AbstractSince the early 1980s different organisations have tried to enact international instruments to control international waste trade. The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal was adopted in 1989 under the auspices of UNEP in order to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects which may result from the management of waste involved in transboundary movements of hazardous waste and its disposal. The Basel Convention has evolved significantly in eight years-whereas only 35 states and the EC signed the Convention at the time of its adoption, more than 113 states have ratified it as to August 1997. Several …
