Evoked potential study in facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy.

1997

Nerve conduction velocities (NCVs), somatosensory (SEPs) and auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 9 patients with facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy (FSHD) and in 20 age-matched controls. In FSHD patients a significant increase of the nerve distal sensory latencies and of the absolute SEP latencies revealed a subclinical involvement of the afferent sensory pathways, as well as the abnormal slowing of the later components of the BAEPs, pointed to a central auditory dysfunction. Moreover all patients underwent brain MRI that showed the presence of white matter hyperintense lesions in 4 of them (44%). No correlations were found between individual or total number of SEP and BAEP abn…

Different neuronal contribution to N20 somatosensory evoked potential and to CO2 laser evoked potentials: an intracerebral recording study

2004

Abstract Objective : To investigate the possible contribution of the primary somatosensory area (SI) to pain sensation. Methods : Depth recordings of CO 2 laser evoked potentials (LEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were performed in an epileptic patient with a stereotactically implanted electrode (Talairach coordinates y =−23, z =40) that passed about 10 mm below the hand representation in her left SI area, as assessed by the source of the N20 SEP component. Results : The intracerebral electrode was able to record the N20 SEP component after non-painful electrical stimulation of her right median nerve. The N20 potential showed a phase reversal in the bipolar montage (at about …

Differential nociceptive deficits in patients with borderline personality disorder and self-injurious behavior: laser-evoked potentials, spatial disc…

2003

Approximately 70-80% of women meeting criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD) report attenuated pain perception or analgesia during non-suicidal, intentional self-mutilation. The aim of this study was to use laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) and psychophysical methods to differentiate the factors that may underlie this analgesic state. Ten unmedicated female patients with BPD (according to DSM-IV) and 14 healthy female control subjects were investigated using brief radiant heat pulses generated by a thulium laser and five-channel LEP recording. Heat pulses were applied as part of a spatial discrimination task (two levels of difficulty) and during a mental arithmetic task. BPD patien…

Dipole Source Analysis of Laser-Evoked Subdural Potentials Recorded From Parasylvian Cortex in Humans

2003

The location of the human nociceptive area(s) near the Sylvian fissure is still controversial in spite of evidence from imaging and evoked potential studies that noxious heat stimuli activate somatosensory areas in that region. Some studies have suggested the secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) on the upper bank of the Sylvian fissure posterior to the central sulcus, others the anterior insula or parietal area 7b. In this study, we applied dipole source analysis techniques to laser-evoked potentials (LEPs) that were recorded from subdural grid electrodes in three patients. As a functional marker, auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) with a generator on the opposite bank of the Sylvian fissur…

Somatosensory evoked potentials in Arnold-Chiari malformation.

2002

Abstract Nearly all patients with repaired myelomeningoceles have an Arnold–Chiari (AC) malformation and about 20% of these patients develop clinical signs of brainstem dysfunction. The management of symptomatic AC malformation is still controversial and techniques are needed to provide an objective assessment of brainstem function. We recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 52 patients aged between 8 months and 20 years (median 7.3 years) with AC malformation, to determine whether the SEPs discriminate patients with symptomatic AC malformation from those without symptoms. The subcortical far-field components P13, P14 and N18, which are generated within the brainstem, were record…

Latency and amplitude variability in serial median nerve SEP recordings

1999

Abstract Objectives : Intra-individual variability of SEP parameters was investigated by serial SEP recordings. Methods : Median nerve SEP of 53 normal subjects (mean age 25.5±2.7 years) were evaluated. Recordings were repeated 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 months after the initial recording. Results : Mean values of latencies from right median nerve stimulation were slightly longer (+0.1 ms) as compared to the left. The intra-individual (within stimulation side) variance did not depend on the time interval between recordings. The total within-stimulation-side variance of latencies was 0.056 ms 2 for N20 (C 3/4 ′ vs. F z ), 0.070 ms 2 for N13 (C 7 vs. F z ), 0.048 ms 2 for N10 (Erb's point vs. F z…

Somaesthetics as a Discipline Between Pragmatist Philosophy and Philosophical Anthropology

2012

Richard Shusterman’s somaesthetics provides a disciplinary framework in which come together reflections on the body by the main philosophical traditions of the twentieth century; the paper investigates some relations with Plessner and philosophical anthropology, as well as the rediscovery of some of the themes of Baumgarten’s aesthetics.

Informal laws and state law in the horn of Africa

2019

This essay examines the relationship existing between informal law and state laws in the four countries of the Horn of Africa from an historical and comparative perspective. Such relation is considered from the time when the four countries became independent, however reference is also made from time to time to the colonial background when necessary to justify a particular situation. The analysis casts also an eye to the relation existing between religious laws and state laws, as religious laws represent an essential component in the interaction between state laws and the other normative orders present in these four countries. The essay concludes with some recommendations for the improvement…

Somatosensory event-related potentials in the rabbit cerebral and cerebellar cortices: a correspondence with mismatch responses in humans.

2001

Somatosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from the cerebellar (CerCx), somatosensory (SomCx) and visual (VCx) cortices in rabbits in two stimulus conditions. In the oddball condition, airpuffs to two different locations in the rabbit's muzzle corresponded to infrequently presented deviant stimuli (oddball-deviants) interspersed with frequently presented standard stimuli. In the deviant-alone condition, deviants (alone-deviants) were presented without standards. ERPs to oddball-deviants differed significantly from those to standards in CerCx and SomCx, but not in VCx. Furthermore, some of these differences were not found between ERPs to alone-deviants and those to standards…
