On the Field Variables Influence on Bonding Phenomena during FSW Processes: Experimental and Numerical Study

Solid state bonding recurs in several manufacturing processes, as Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Linear Friction Welding (LFW), extrusion of hollow profiles and Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB). The former processes are nowadays of particular industrial interest because of the specific advantages with respect to the classic welding technologies. In FSW the solid state bonding is obtained between an undeformed cold material, already placed in the advancing side of the joint, and the hot material flow incoming from the retreating side. Residual stresses in friction stir welded parts of complex geometry

Residual stresses play a key role on the mechanics underlying the fatigue crack growth propagation of welded joints. Indeed, compressive residual stresses may induce a beneficial enhancement of the fatigue life under loading condition whereas tensile residual stresses may act to increase the stress distribution at crack tip, resulting in a life-threatening condition of the welded structure. Corbels are structural members often used in reinforced concrete structures to transfer vertical and horizontal forces to principal members. This paper presents experimental research regarding the flexural behavior of corbels in plain and fibrous concrete and in the presence of steel bars. On vortex shape in unbaffled stirred vessels as measured by digital image analysis

In this work, digital image analysis coupled with a suitable shadowgraphy-based technique is employed to investigate the shape of the free-surface vortex that forms in uncovered unbaffled tanks stirred by either a D=T/3 Lightnin A310 or a D=T/3 Rushton turbine. The technique is based on back-lighting the vessel and suitably averaging vortex images over time. Data obtained show that the two different impellers give rise to quite different vortex shapes. A novel 2-parameter model is proposed that successfully describes vortex shapes obtained with both impellers.

Transverse reinforcement plays a key role in the response behavior of reinforced concrete beams. Therefore, corrosion of steel stirrups may change the failure mode of elements from bending to shear, leading to a brittle and catastrophic crisis.
