Structure of amorphousGe8Sb2Te11:GeTe-Sb2Te3alloys and optical storage
2009
The amorphous structure of ${\text{Ge}}_{8}{\text{Sb}}_{2}{\text{Te}}_{11}$, an alloy used in the Blu-ray Disc, the de facto successor to digital versatile disk (DVD) optical storage, has been characterized by large-scale (630 atoms, 0.4 ns) density-functional/molecular-dynamics simulations using the new PBEsol approximation for the exchange-correlation energy functional. The geometry and electronic structure agree well with available x-ray diffraction data and photoelectron measurements. The total coordination numbers are Ge: 4.0, Sb: 3.7, and Te: 2.9, and the Ge-Ge partial coordination number is 0.7. Most atoms (particularly Sb) prefer octahedral coordination but 42% of Ge atoms are ``tet…
Adjacent vertices can be hard to find by quantum walks
2018
Quantum walks have been useful for designing quantum algorithms that outperform their classical versions for a variety of search problems. Most of the papers, however, consider a search space containing a single marked element. We show that if the search space contains more than one marked element, their placement may drastically affect the performance of the search. More specifically, we study search by quantum walks on general graphs and show a wide class of configurations of marked vertices, for which search by quantum walk needs Ω(N) steps, that is, it has no speed-up over the classical exhaustive search. The demonstrated configurations occur for certain placements of two or more adjace…
A Tight Lower Bound on Certificate Complexity in Terms of Block Sensitivity and Sensitivity
2014
Sensitivity, certificate complexity and block sensitivity are widely used Boolean function complexity measures. A longstanding open problem, proposed by Nisan and Szegedy [7], is whether sensitivity and block sensitivity are polynomially related. Motivated by the constructions of functions which achieve the largest known separations, we study the relation between 1-certificate complexity and 0-sensitivity and 0-block sensitivity.
HybridS: A Scheme for Secure Distributed Data Storage in WSNs
2008
In unattended wireless sensor networks (WSNs), data is stored locally or at designated nodes upon sensing, and users can access it on demand. This paradigm can improve energy efficiency by making use of the upcoming cheap and large flash memory, as well as system robustness. Nevertheless, the security and dependability of distributed storage are critical for the applicability of such WSNs. In this paper, we propose a secure and dependable data storage scheme by taking advantages of secret sharing and Reed-Solomon code, which has computational security and yet maintains optimal data size. The extensive analysis verifies our scheme can provide secure and dependable data storage in WSNs in the…
Patient documentation for the ultrasound laboratory
1991
The development of a PC based system for the storage of patient data in the echocardiography laboratory is described. Special design objectives were low cost and user friendliness, including an integrated special query language. After 3 years of use, the system stores 80000 diagnoses from 12000 patients without any relevant slowdown of response. Future developments concerning the communication between the database system and an echocardiographic sector scanner are discussed.
New binary solid dispersion of indomethacin with surfactant polymer: From physical characterization to in vitro dissolution enhancement
2009
This article investigated preparation of solid dispersions containing a poor water-soluble drug, indomethacin (IND), and a new surfactant polymer, polyoxyethylene 32 distearate (POED). Solid dispersions were prepared by the melting method and characterized by DSC, hot-stage microscopy (HSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC and HSM analyses performed on IND/POED physical mixtures indicated that IND could dissolve in liquid POED. The materials showed complete miscibility at liquid state. Combination of DSC, XRD, and SEM revealed that these materials had limited miscibility at the solid state. Up to 20% w/w IND in POED, we did not detect significant modifica…
Loading, release and stability of epirubicin-loaded drug-eluting beads.
2015
Purpose The aim of this study was to determine the loading efficiency, physico-chemical stability and release of epirubicin-loaded DC Bead™ (Biocompatibles UK Ltd, a BTG International group company) (bead size 70–150 µm (=DC Bead M1™) and 100–300 µm) after loading with epirubicin solution (2 mg/ml) or reconstituted powder formulation (25 mg/ml) and controlled storage. Methods DC Bead™ were loaded with 76 mg epirubicin solution (Epimedac™, Medac GmbH) or 75 mg epirubicin powder formulation (Farmorubicin™, Pharmacia Pfizer GmbH) per 2 ml of beads. Drug loading efficiency and stability were determined by measuring the epirubicin concentration in the excess solution after predetermined interval…
Stability of tacrolimus ophthalmic solution
2017
Purpose The stability of 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus ophthalmic solution at different storage temperatures was studied. Methods A sterile ophthalmic solution of 0.3 mg/mL tacrolimus was prepared in triplicate under aseptic conditions by diluting tacrolimus in eye drops. Three aliquots of this solution were transferred into polypropylene bottles and stored at 25, 2–8, or −15 to −25 °C. Samples were collected immediately after preparation and at selected time points and assayed in triplicate using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Samples were also visually examined for macroscopic changes. The 0.3-mg/mL tacrolimus solution was also exposed to acidic treatment and heat to force its degr…
Feasibility of Linear Parametric Estimation of Dynamic Information Measures to assess Physiological Stress from Short-Term Cardiovascular Variability
2021
Extensive efforts have been recently devoted to implement fast and reliable algorithms capable of assessing the physiological response of the organism to physiological stress. In this study, we propose the comparison between model-free and linear parametric methods as regards their ability to detect alterations in the dynamics and in the complexity of cardiovascular and respiratory variability evoked by postural and mental stress. Dynamic entropy (DE) and information storage (IS) measures were calculated on three physiological time-series, i.e. heart period, respiratory volume and systolic arterial pressure, on 61 healthy subjects monitored in resting conditions as well as during head-up ti…
Simulator for a Natural Gas Storage Realised in Depleted Deposit
2014
The present paper presents the implementation of a numerical model for a natural storage transformed into a deposit which takes into consideration the geometry of the storage, the properties of the rocks and in which the movements of the gases can be described. The model is two-dimensional nonstationary and allows the dynamic simulation of the processes of injection and extraction. The location of the wells and their flows can be thus studied and optimized to maximize the amount of the stored gases. The presented model allows the quick finding of solutions for a whole cycle of storage in a short time so that it could be used successfully in the operation process.
