Eutrophic status influences the impact of pesticide mixtures and predation on Daphnia pulex populations
2021
Abstract Pesticides, nutrients, and ecological stressors such as competition or predation co‐occur in freshwater ecosystems impacted by agriculture. The extent to which combinations of these stressors affect aquatic populations and the role of nutrients availability in modulating these responses requires further understanding. In this study, we assessed how pesticides affecting different taxonomic groups and predation influence the response of Daphnia pulex populations under different trophic conditions. An outdoor experiment was designed following a factorial design, with the insecticide chlorpyrifos, the herbicide diuron, and the predation by Notonecta sp. individuals as key stressors. Th…
Direct and transgenerational effects of an experimental heatwave on early life stages in a freshwater snail
2019
1. Global climate change imposes a serious threat to natural populations of many species. Estimates of the effects of climate change‐mediated environmental stresses are, however, often based only on their direct effects on organisms, and neglect the potential transgenerational (e.g. maternal) effects. 2. We tested whether high temperature (i.e. an experimental heatwave), which is known to reduce the performance of adult Lymnaea stagnalis snails, affects the produced offspring (eggs and hatchlings) through maternal effects, and how strong these effects are compared with the effects of direct exposure of offspring to high temperature. We examined the effect of maternal thermal environment (15…
Implementation of an occupational stress Control Model
2019
Occupational stress is an enemy of society, a problem that requires a deep research to control stress more effectively. The case study presented in this article consists of a model control regarding occupational stress. The experimental part of this study involved interviews with 15 employees, 9 females and 6 males aged between 25-55 years. Participants described stressful situations at work. Time allocated for each subject was 45 minutes per interviews. The model was implemented based on the job content stressors, effects of stress (physiological, psychological, behavioural) and interviews results. Future directions in stress research is to identify the way to have control in the workplace…
Effect of the mutual position between weld seam and reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welding of AA6082 skin and str…
2016
Abstract In the paper, a numerical and experimental study was carried out to highlight the effect of the distance d between the weld seam and the reinforcement on the residual stress distribution in Friction Stir Welded AA6082-T6 structures. An L-shaped profile was welded to a sheet metal with varying tool rotation and distance d from the weld seam. The Cut Compliance method was used to determine the resulting longitudinal residual stress. A dedicated FE model for FSW was set up, validated and utilized to predict the longitudinal residual stress in the assembled part. The analysis allowed the identification of a few design guidelines in order to reduce the detrimental effects of the residua…
Assessment of material models through simple machining tests
2008
The accuracy of the results obtained from FEM simulation of machining operations depends on the accuracy of input data. Among these, the flow stress data of the workpiece are extremely important together with the friction along the tool-chip interface. In this study, an identification procedure for the determination of material parameters that are used for the FEM simulation of machining processes is proposed. The procedure is based on the coupling of a numerical identification procedure and Arbitrarian Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) Finite Element simulations of turning operations. An experimental campaign was developed in order to calibrate the model and to validate the procedure. The basic id…
Residual stress measurement in innovative friction stir welding processes
2017
In recent years, important innovations have been introduced in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology such as, for example, the Laser assisted Friction Stir Welding (LFSW) and in-process Cooled Friction Stir Welding (CFSW). Residual stresses have a fundamental role in welded structures because they affect the way to design the structures, fatigue life, corrosion resistance and many other material properties. Consequently, it is important to investigate the residual stress distribution in FSW where, though the heat input is lower compared to traditional welding techniques, the constraints applied to the parts to weld are more severe. The aim of the present work is to verify the capabilities …
Improving surface integrity of additively manufactured GP1 stainless steel by roller burnishing
2020
Abstract Additive manufacturing can rapidly fabricate the desired components by selectively melting and solidifying feedstock, rather than conventional subtractive machining. However, the difference between the two routes in terms of surface integrity of the final component is relevant. This paper presents a strategy to control the surface characteristics of additively manufactured stainless steel by roller burnishing. In particular, process parameters have been carefully selected to improve the surface integrity of the worked material. The quality of the surface has been analyzed in terms of roughness, hardness, microstructure and residual stresses. The overall product endurance under high…
Friction Stir Welding of Ti6Al4V complex geometries for aeronautical applications: a feasibility study
2020
Abstract While Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of aluminium alloys can be considered a mature technology, even for complex joint morphologies, as T joints welded “in transparency”, welding of hard material still presents several open issues. In fact, welding of titanium alloys is a challenging process due to the chemical, mechanical and thermal characteristics of such materials which are subjected to atmosphere contamination resulting in joint hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen embrittlement; additionally, due to the high melting temperature, large distortion and residual stress are found in joints obtained by traditional fusion welding processes as gas metal arc welding, electron beam welding and l…
Influence of residual stress, surface roughness and crystallographic texture induced by machining on the corrosion behaviour of copper in salt-fog at…
2012
International audience; The influence of quadratic stress, crystallographic texture, lubrication and surface roughness generated by superfinish turning on the corrosion behaviour of pure copper was quantified in salt-fog atmosphere. This was done using statistical analysis (Pearson's correlation matrix). Three compounds were found after corrosion tests: atacamite/paratacamite and a black layer (mixture of the lubricant and the salt atmosphere). Surface characteristics were classified according to their decreasing influence on the formation of atacamite/paratacamite as follows: surface roughness and quadratic stress. Lubrication and the crystallographic texture have the lowest influence on c…
