DNA is constantly exposed to external and metabolic stress agents, including the solar radiation and in particular the UV portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Such source of stress can induce photochemical modification of the structure of DNA and of its basic components, i.e. the nucleobases. DNA lesions may ultimately lead to genomic instability, mutations, and even to carcinogenesis. Deficiency of the Cockayne syndrome B (CSB) gene aggravates the genomic instability caused by endogenous oxidative DNA base damage in mice.

The Cockayne syndrome B protein (CSB) has long been known to be involved in the repair of DNA modifications that block the RNA polymerase in transcribed DNA sequences (transcription-coupled repair). Recent evidence suggests that it also has a more general role in the repair of oxidative DNA base modifications such as 7,8-dihydro-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxoG). In mammalian cells, 8-oxoG is a substrate of the repair glycosylase OGG1. Mice without this enzyme accumulate 8-oxoG in the genome and have elevated spontaneous mutation rates. Redox regulation of genome stability by effects on gene expression, epigenetic pathways and DNA damage/repair

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (e.g. H2O2, nitric oxide) confer redox regulation of essential cellular signaling pathways such as cell differentiation, proliferation, migration and apoptosis. In addition, classical regulation of gene expression or activity, including gene transcription to RNA followed by translation to the protein level, by transcription factors (e.g. NF-κB, HIF-1α) and mRNA binding proteins (e.g. GAPDH, HuR) is subject to redox regulation. Abstract Sponges (Porifera) are among the major phyla inhabiting the marine hard-substrate benthos, both in respect to the number of species and their biomass. Hence reliable biomarkers need to be developed to monitor the environmental load in those animals. Abstract Although many ductile shear zones are supposed to have developed by approximately simple shear flow, some must have formed under different conditions. A few types of such ‘non-simple shear zones’ have been proposed in the literature such as transpression-, transtension- and stretching-shear zones. This paper presents a full three-dimensional kinematic model of shear zones with monoclinic flow geometry. Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) describes an organisation’s policies, practices, and procedures that aim at protecting employees’ psychological health and safety. In line with the job demands-resources (JD-R) model, we proposed PSC to be a cause of the causes, that is, an upstream organisational resource that decreases perceived demands and increases perceived resources in the form of illegitimate tasks and appreciation. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to assess the stress level of oral-maxillofacial surgeons, based on the Demand-Control Model. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 128 oral-maxillofacial surgeons who participated in the Brazilian Congress of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery held in the city of Florianópolis, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil.
