Automatic regrouping of strata in the goodness-of-fit chi-square test

2019

Pearson’s chi-square test is widely employed in social and health sciences to analyze categorical data and contingency tables. For the test to be valid, the sample size must be large enough to provide a minimum number of expected elements per category. This paper develops functions for regrouping strata automatically no matter where they are located, thus enabling the goodness-of-fit test to be performed within an iterative procedure. The functions are written in Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and in Mathematica. The usefulness and performance of these functions is illustrated by means of a simulation study and the application to different datasets. Finally, the iterative use of …

Utility of the Mantel-Haenszel Procedure for Detecting Differential Item Functioning in Small Samples

2004

Sample-size restrictions limit the contingency table approaches based on asymptotic distributions, such as the Mantel-Haenszel (MH) procedure, for detecting differential item functioning (DIF) in many practical applications. Within this framework, the present study investigated the power and Type I error performance of empirical and inferential criteria for DIF detection in small samples. Sample sizes (50/50, 100/50, 200/50, and 100/100 for the reference and focal groups, respectively), ability distributions (equal and unequal), and amount of DIF (moderate and high) were manipulated. The results show the advantages of employing theMHchi-square statistic using high levels of significance (•…

Planktonic foraminifera in ODP Hole 160-963A

2006

New faunal and floral records from Ocean Drilling Project Hole 963A, resolved at ?80-year spacing, provide evidence of suborbital scale climate variability in the central Mediterranean Sea throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5. Cold events in the central Mediterranean Sea, indicated by low abundances of warm species and high abundances of cold species, are also evident in a planktonic foraminifera paleoclimatic curve. They have been linked to NGRIP Greenland ice core “C” events and appear correlative with similar sub-millennial climate fluctuations identified in the North Atlantic region and in the Alboran Basin (Westernmost Mediterranean). Low-resolution benthic and planktonic Oxygen Iso…

Force probe simulations using a hybrid scheme with virtual sites.

2017

Hybrid simulations, in which a part of the system is treated with atomistic resolution and the remainder is represented on a coarse-grained level, allow for fast sampling while using the accuracy of atomistic force fields. We apply a hybrid scheme to study the mechanical unfolding and refolding of a molecular complex using force probe molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations. The degrees of freedom of the solvent molecules are treated in a coarse-grained manner while atomistic resolution is retained for the solute. The coupling between the solvent and the solute is provided using virtual sites. We test two different common coarse-graining procedures, the iterative Boltzmann inversion method an…

Long- and short-term in vitro D-dimer stability measured with INNOVANCE D-Dimer.

2009

Summary In vitro D-dimer stability in plasma is widely assumed, but has not yet been documented by systematic studies using samples covering a wide range of D-dimer. We investigated the short- and long-term stability of D-dimer in clinical citrated plasma samples with normal and pathological levels. The short-term stability was analysed by measuring D-dimer fresh, after storage of plasma for 4 hours at room temperature (RT) and after an additional 24 h storage at +2 to +8°C (n=40). Long-term stability samples (n=40) were measured fresh and after storage for 19, 25 and 36 months at ≤-60°C. The effect of repeated freezing was analysed by measuring samples (n=50) fresh and after four consecuti…

Dislipidēmija kā riska faktors nieru funkcionālo spēju samazinājumam I tipa cukura diabēta pacientiem

2019

Diabētiskā nefropātija ir svarīga un bieži diabēta pacienta dzīvību apdraudoša mikrovaskulāra komplikācija (Groop et al., 2009). Diabētiskās nefropātijas pacientiem dislipidēmiju sastop bieži, tomēr līdz šim veikto pētījumu rezultāti nav viennozīmīgi attiecībā uz seruma lipīdu frakciju ietekmi uz nieru funkciju. Pētījuma mērķis bija izpētīt 1. tipa cukura diabēta pacientu lipīdu un apolipoproteīnu līmeņu asociāciju ar nieru funkcionālo spēju (glomerulārā filtrācijas ātruma un albuminūrijas) samazinājumu laika gaitā. Veikts šķērsgriezuma tipa pētījums, kurā tika izmantoti 106 1. tipa cukura diabēta pacientu paraugi un klīniskie dati no „LatDiane: Latvijas diabētiskās nefropātijas pētījuma”, …

Categories and boundaries in Sámi exhibitions

2019

This article examines the construction of ethnicity in the permanent exhibitions of two Sami museums: Siida, the National Museum of the Finnish Sami and a Nature Centre of Metsahallitus, and ajtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum. The aim of the article is to find out how ethnic categories and boundaries are created by the exhibitions, and how the museum presentations relate to contemporary public discussions about Sami ethnicity. The presentations are analysed within the framework of discourse analysis. The findings suggest that the two museums, with a few possible exceptions, tend to produce a clear and stable ethnic boundary between the Sami and other ethnicities. Like the Sami ethn…

Pursuing decentralisation : regional cultural policies in Finland and Sweden

2021

In both Finland and Sweden, decentralisation has traditionally been an essential cultural policy aim. This article explores how, by pursuing decentralisation, the regional jurisdictions have been presented with more possibilities to fulfil their purposes and in this way, gain legitimacy in cultural policy. Based on the analysis of political, legal, and administrative documents, three main periods of regional decentralisation in cultural policies are identified: regions as vehicles of welfare policy, regionalisation, and competitive regions. In both countries, national governments have promoted the regional level’s agency, and in doing so, potential institutional change in cultural policy. H…

Circulating cell-free DNA: an up-coming molecular marker in exercise physiology.

2012

The phenomenon of circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) concentrations is of importance for many biomedical disciplines including the field of exercise physiology. Increases of cfDNA due to exercise are described to be a potential hallmark for the overtraining syndrome and might be related to, or trigger adaptations of, immune function induced by strenuous exercise. At the same time, exercise provides a practicable model for studying the phenomenon of cfDNA that is described to be of pathophysiological relevance for different topics in clinical medicine like autoimmune diseases and cancer. In this review, we are summarizing the current knowledge of exercise-based acute and chronic alterations i…
