Transition to Reinforced State by Percolating Domains of Intercalated Brush-Modified Cellulose Nanocrystals and Poly(butadiene) in Cross-Linked Compo…
2013
The classic nanocomposite approach aims at percolation of low fraction of exfoliated individual reinforcing nanoscale elements within a polymeric matrix. By contrast, many of the mechanically excellent biological nanocomposites involve self-assembled and space-filled structures of hard reinforcing and soft toughening domains, with high weight fraction of reinforcements. Here we inspect a new concept toward mimicking such structures by studying whether percolation of intercalated domains consisting of alternating rigid and reinforcing, and soft rubbery domains could allow a transition to a reinforced state. Toward that, we present the functionalization of rigid native cellulose nanocrystals …
Morphology and properties of blends of polyethylene with a semiflexible liquid crystalline polymer
1995
Blends of three polyethylene (PE) samples (two HDPE grades and LLDPE) with an experimental sample of a semiflexible liquid crystalline polymer (SBH 1 :1 :2 by Eniricerche) have been prepared in a Brabender compounder. The processing-aid effect of the LCP has been demonstrated by the decreased energy required for extruding the blends, as compared to that needed for neat PE. The thermal properties, as studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), have shown that the two components of the blends are immiscible. However, the dispersed SBH phase has been found to act as a nucleating agent for the crystallization of LLDPE, whereas no such effect was observed for HDPE. This has been taken as…
Thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of beeswax-halloysite nanocomposites for consolidating waterlogged archaeological woods
2015
Abstract Thermal and mechanical properties were determined for the halloysite nanotubes (HNT)/beeswax composites at various compositions. The beeswax degradation temperatures and time course, provided by thermogravimetry (TG), evidenced the improvement of the thermal properties operated by HNT. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) allowed us to determine the enthalpy of melting as well as the time course of the melting process for beeswax. A slight loss of beeswax crystallinity was observed upon HNT addition. The dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) provided the loss and the storage modulus for the nanocomposites upon heating and it was shown that the nanoclays create an inorganic framewo…
One-pot synthesis and characterization of aliphatic poly(oxytetramethylene) ionene
2002
Abstract One-pot synthesis of poly(oxytetramethylene) ionene (POI) composed of one dimethylammonium group in each repeating unit is described. POI was prepared by using the cationic polymerization of tetrahydrofuran, followed by the chain extension reaction of living poly(oxytetramethylene) (POTM) chain with N , N -dimethylaminotrimethylsilane. The weight average molecular weight of the ionene with bromide counter-anion (POI–Br) was 48,000 g/mol and the molecular weight of POTM between the ionic sites was ca. 2100. POI–Br showed polyelectrolyte behavior in polar solvent. The elastomeric film of POI–Br was prepared: its tensile strength at break and elongation at break were ca. 11 MPa and ca…
Combining carvacrol and nisin in biodegradable films for antibacterial packaging applications
2021
Abstract In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric films containing carvacrol (CRV) and a nisin commercial formulation (Nis) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. As polymer matrix, a commercial biodegradable polymer formulation of Mater-Bi (MB) was chosen due to its significant food packaging applications. CRV and Nis were chosen due to their well-established antibacterial properties and their potential synergistic effect. MB/CRV, MB/Nis, and MB/CRV/Nis systems were produced by melt mixing and compression molding. The mechanical properties of the films were evaluated by tensile tests. Differential scanning calorimetry was assessed aiming at investiga…
Evaluation of the interaction and drug release from alpha,beta-polyaspartamide derivatives to a biomembrane model
2005
This article reports on a comparative study on the ability of various polymers, containing hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic groups, to interact with a biomembrane model using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. Multilamellar vesicles of mixed dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) were chosen as a model of cell membranes. The investigated samples were a water soluble polymer, the alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) and its derivatives partially functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG2000) to obtain PHEA-PEG2000, with hexadecylamine (C16) to obtain PHEA-C16, and with both compounds to obtain PHEA-PEG2000-C16. Th…
Process parameters of microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.
2020
This study aimed for a detailed understanding of the impact of different process parameters involved during celecoxib-loaded microsphere preparation based on propylene carbonate emulsion-precursors.Microspheres were prepared by a modified emulsification-solvent extraction method. Performed investigations included polymer solubility and viscosity, microsphere size, morphology and stability, propylene carbonate content as well as celecoxib solid state, content and release.Rough-walled round microspheres with sizes between 21 µm and 122 µm and an internal sponge-like structure filled with residual propylene carbonate (content between 1.9 ± 0.1% and 6.7 ± 0.5% w/w) were obtained. Encapsulation …
Influence of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) on PVA-Poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PVA-PHEA) Microcrystalline Solid Dispersion Films
2020
AbstractThis study was conducted to formulate buccal films consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PHEA), to improve the dissolution of the drug through the oral mucosa. Ibuprofen sodium salt was used as a model drug, and the buccal film was expected to enhance its dissolution rate. Two different concentrations of PVA (5% w/v and 7.5% w/v) were used. Solvent casting was used to prepare films, where a solution consisting of drug and polymer was cast and allowed to dry. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the pr…
Insights into the effect of the spacer on the properties of imidazolium based AIE luminogens
2021
Abstract With the aim to obtain organic salts with potential applications in high performance molecular electronics, we combined properties of π-conjugated spacers, like 1,4-diethynylbenzene and 1,6-diethynylpyrene, with the ones of both imidazole and imidazolium units. Physico-chemical properties of obtained fluorescent organic salts were investigated performing thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and cyclic voltammetry measurements (CV). Photophysical behavior of the salts was analyzed in conventional solvents and ionic liquids, by UV–vis and fluorescence investigation. Solution phase aggregation study revealed that these salts self-assemble in conve…
Endothelialization of chitosan porous conduits via immobilization of a recombinant fibronectin fragment (rhFNIII7–10)
2013
Abstract The present study aimed to develop a pre-endothelialized chitosan (CH) porous hollowed scaffold for application in spinal cord regenerative therapies. CH conduits with different degrees of acetylation (DA; 4% and 15%) were prepared, characterized (microstructure, porosity and water uptake) and functionalized with a recombinant fragment of human fibronectin (rhFNIII 7–10 ). Immobilized rhFNIII 7–10 was characterized in terms of amount ( 125 I-radiolabelling), exposure of cell-binding domains (immunofluorescence) and ability to mediate endothelial cell (EC) adhesion and cytoskeletal rearrangement. Functionalized conduits revealed a linear increase in immobilized rhFNIII 7–10 with rhF…
