Thermodynamics of cyclodextrin-star copolymer threading-dethreading process

2015

We investigated the interactions of a star-like copolymer with cyclodextrins (CD) with different cavity size. Direct measurements of thermodynamic properties were done, and the application of proper molecular models was useful for the interpretation of the involved phenomena. The CD–copolymer inclusion complexes were characterized by isothermal titration calorimetry. The copolymer aggregation induced by temperature was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, volume and compressibility measurements. The behavior of the ternary T1107/CD/water mixture was interpreted considering competing equilibria. The investigated systems showed an interesting temperature responsive behavior so t…

Vitrification of polymer solutions as a function of solvent quality, analyzed via vapor pressures.

2006

Vapor pressures (headspace sampling in combination with gas chromatography) and glass transition temperatures [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)] have been measured for solutions of polystyrene (PS) in either toluene (TL) (10-70 degrees C) or cyclohexane (CH) (32-60 degrees C) from moderately concentrated solutions up to the pure polymer. As long as the mixtures are liquid, the vapor pressure of TL (good solvent) is considerably lower than that of CH (theta solvent) under other identical conditions. These differences vanish upon the vitrification of the solutions. For TL the isothermal liquid-solid transition induced by an increase of polymer concentration takes place within a finite …

Organometallic ABC-triblock copolymers

1998

The interaction of Fe and Pd complexes with double bonds of the polybutadiene (PB) block in polystyrene-polybutadiene-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers has been studied. The incorporation of Fe(CO)3 fragments into the PB bloc was found to result in an increase in its rigidity. The presence of iron or palladium complexes in the PB block affects strongly the morphology of the triblock copolymers.

Self-assembly of fluorescent diimidazolium salts: tailor properties of the aggregates changing alkyl chain features

2016

Searching for new fluorescent organic salts to be used in biomedical and electrochemical field, we conjugated properties of imidazolium salts with the ones of naphthalene diimide core and we obtained some N,N′-bis-(1-alkyl-3-propylimidazolium)naphthalene diimide diiodides. We took into account alkyl chains going from hexyl to dodecyl, as well as hydrogenated and fluorinated alkyl tails. After determination of their thermal behaviour by differential scanning calorimetry, concentration-, and temperature-dependent spectroscopic studies (UV-vis and fluorescence) were performed evidencing the occurrence of isodesmic and enthalpy-driven self-assembly processes. Properties of aggregates were also …

Kinetics of Molecule Transfer between Lipid Vesicles and β-Cyclodextrins

1996

Abstract We propose a calorimetric method based on the van't Hoff model of depression of the freezing temperature to investigate slow kinetics involving lipid vesicles (liposomes) and drug–β-cyclodextrin (Cyd) complexes. Some nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were examined and standard phospholipid liposomes were used in our experiments. Three different kinetic processes were investigated: (a)9Transfer of drugs from water-soluble Cyd-complexes to void liposomes. (b)9Uptake of drugs from the surface of liposomes by free Cyd dissolved in the aqueous phase. (c)9Exchange of drugs from loaded to void vesicles, and the effect of free Cyd in enhancing such a transfer. Most experiments w…

α,β-Poly(N-Hydroxyethyl)-DL-Aspartamide Hydrogels as Drug Delivery Devices

1996

α,β-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) was exposed to gamma radiation to obtain micromatrices able to swell in an aqueous medium. Crosslinked PHEA was loaded with an anti-inflammatory drug, 4-biphenylacetic acid (BPAA) and the drug dispersion in the network was investigated by X-ray analysis. The BPAA loaded PHEA microparticles were also characterized by dimensional analysis, which showed the presence of quasispherical shapes. The drug release from PHEA hydrogel was studied in vitro in a pH 1.1 (simulated gastric juice) and in a pH 7.4 buffer solution, respectively. The experimental data indicate that an anomalous delivery occurs, but Fickian diffusion through swollen PHEA hydrogel…

Tristriazolotriazines (TTTs) with a threefold alkoxyphenyl substitution were prepared and studied by DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray scattering. Six pentyloxy chains are sufficient to induce liquid-crystalline behavior in these star-shaped compounds. Thermotropic properties of TTTs with varying substitution patterns and a periphery of linear chains of different lengths, branching in the chain and swallow-tails, are compared. Generally, these disks display broad and stable thermotropic mesophases, with the tangential TTT being superior to the radial isomer. The structure–property relationships of the number of alkyl chains, their position, length and structure were studied.

Synthesis and phase behaviour of liquid-crystalline side group polyesters

1990

Abstract Several series of liquid-crystalline side group polymers with a polyester backbone structure have been synthesized using mesogenic diethylmalonate and 1,3-propanediol derivatives. The structures of the polymer backbone and the mesogenic units have been varied systematically. As shown by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction, the side group polyesters exhibit nematic and/or smectic mesophases. Polyesters synthesized from mesogenic diethylmalonate derivatives can tolerate long non-mesogenic segments in the polymer main chain without losing their liquid crystal properties. X-ray studies suggest that some of the smectic polymers exhibit interdig…

Detection of the liquid ? liquid demixing by differential scanning calorimetry

1983

From theoretical considerations it is concluded that the demixing temperatures of moderately concentrated polymer solutions should manifest themselves in a change of the slope of the corresponding DSC trace; the effects are expected to suffice for detection by means of the commercially available dual furnace instrument DSC-2C from Perkin-Elmer.

Aggregation in aqueous media of tri-block copolymers tuned by the molecular selectivity of cyclodextrins

2009

The water + cyclodextrin + poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) mixtures have been investigated to explore the temperature effect on the aggregation of the copolymer in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs). The CDs with different cavity sizes were chosen because they may include either the hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxides) block or both kinds of blocks. The differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity experiments straightforwardly evidenced that the critical micellar temperature is shifted to larger values by adding a CD which is able to include the middle poly(propylene oxide) block while it is not influenced by the presence of CD which is selective to the poly…
