Demands and Challenges : Experiences of Ethiopian Rural School Teachers

Rural schools in Ethiopia are characterized by high drop-out rates, a lack of teaching materials, and low learning achievements. This study examines the experiences of teachers who work in such schools and emphasizes that their work can make significant contributions to the development of education in Ethiopia. The paper seeks to answer a question: ‘How do the teachers perceive their work situation and how could this be improved?’ The findings show that according to teachers’ opinion the current principal challenge is the tension between strict curriculum requirements, associated with annual testing, and follow-up, while the government insists that teaching should be more student centered. …

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę subiektywnej oceny propozycji wprowadzanych rozwiązań dotyczących podniesienia efektywności kształcenia zawodowego i zwiększenia jego prestiżu w społeczeństwie na tle oczekiwań rynku pracy.

W artykule przedstawiona została realizacja projektu edukacyjnego pt.: Opolskie szkolnictwo zawodowe bliżej rynku pracy”, który integruje szkoły zawodowe z terenu województwa opolskiego z lokalnymi przedsiębiorcami. Realizacja tego przedsięwzięcia jest odpowiedzią na potrzeby samych przedsiębiorców, którzy zgłaszali problemy w pozyskiwaniu odpowiednio wykwalifikowanej kadry. Projekt przybliża również istniejący rynek pracy młodym ludziom, którzy w najbliższej przyszłości staną się jego aktywnymi uczestnikami. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań, jakimi objęci zostali uczestnicy projektu, uwzględniające ich opinię na temat celowości, efektywności i przydatności podejmowanych działań

The present study aims to provide insights into the experiences of early school leavers within the Finnish context. We conducted a narrative inquiry among eleven early school leavers who were in prison when they were interviewed. Self Determination Theory (SDT), more specifically the concept of frustration of the three basic psychological needs of competence, relatedness and autonomy, and the tendency of people to move towards more supporting environments, was used as an interpretative tool, along with contextual information. Our aim in this article is to study the relation between earnings of French universities graduates and some characteristics of their universities. We exploit data from the Céreq's "Génération 98" survey, enriched with information on university characteristics primarily from the ANETES (yearbook of French institutions of higher education). We employ multilevel modeling, enabling us to take advantage of the natural hierarchy in our separate datasets, and thus to identify, and even to measure potential effects of institutional quality. This work focuses on the study of personal determinants of pupils' achievement and reactions toward class (well-being; satisfaction with teacher, learning and class). A theoretical model is tested by commonality analysis and refined by causal paths analysis. The results show that external and cognitive prior characteristics (age, gender, socio-occupational background, academic record) have direct effects on criteria variables, and indirectly via the attitudes toward school (negative feelings; scholastic interest; aspirations for future studies; "scholastic anxiety, worry and stress"; fun school).
