Parthosque reposcere signa.
A fragmentary loricata statue preserved in the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia (the ancient Regium Lepidi), to which in the past had…
Picasso y Christian Zervos. Los dibujos escultóricos del cuaderno de Cannes, en 1927, y las esculturas biomórficas modeladas en París, en 1928
2012
This article establishes the analysis of Picasso´s drawing in Cannes, in 1927, and their relation with the sculptures fashioned in París in 1928. The review of this drawing with a new plastic purpose and the comparison with other preceding sculptures in different materials facilitate a new reading, and explain the artist evolution in that specialty and the unpublished nature of immediate sculptures. The influence on important avant-garde and surrealist artists increases the interest in this review and the conclusions reached. Su due sculture minori di Alessandria e Leptis Magna
2018
This paper focuses on two marble sculptures representing Bellerophon with the Chimaera, now in the Alexandria and Lepcis Magna Museums, which received the attention of the late Professor Nicola Bonacasa several decades ago. Carved in Proconnesian marble and rendered with a very close iconography, they are part of a larger group of about ten trapezophora with the same subject. Pointing out more on differences among these exemplares than on their analogies, after some considerations on the long debate about the function and the meaning of these sculptures as well as on the geography of the myth of the Chimaera, a new interpretation of the myth is proposed, not as unique but co-existing with t…

Rewriting antiquity, renewing Rome. The Identity of the Eternal City through Visual Art, Monumental Inscriptions and the Mirabilia
2011
AbstractDuring the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Church began a process of renovation (renovatio) and the city of Rome was given new meanings. Antiquity is part of the identity of the Eternal City; the reuse or reframing of aspects of antiquity inevitably transformed the image of Rome. Public spaces, architecture and objects were given new Christian readings. Inscriptions, present both in sacred and secular settings, played an important role. A similar rewriting can also be found in travel literature and descriptions of the city, such as in the Mirabilia urbis Rome, where ancient monuments were re-interpreted to demonstrate the superiority of Christianity. Inscriptions were used as sym…
The Virtual Reconstruction of the Aesculapius and Hygeia Statues from the Sanctuary of Isis in Lilybaeum: Methods and Tools for Ancient Sculptures’ E…
2022
Thanks to recent technological developments in 3D surveys, computer graphics and virtual reality, new scenarios have been opened for the documentation and enhancement of ancient sculptures. When not totally preserved, sculptures can be digitally reproduced, modified and visualized to simulate their physical or virtual reconstruction in a non-invasive way for specialists or for dissemination aims. The virtual sculptural reconstruction process starts usually from the 3D survey of real fragments, and then continues by integrating missing parts with 3D modelling techniques by means of source evaluation. Along with primary data sources (reality-based model), secondary data sources (photos, drawi…

La Gipsoteca del Dipartimento Culture e Società dell'Università degli Studi di Palermo. Storia e catalogo
2017
The volume presents, for the first time, the history and catalog of the Gipsoteca of the Culture and Society Department of the University of Palermo. Scultura ellenistica e paesaggio urbano: i casi di Tindari e Solunto
2019
The archaeological evidence provides us with significant clues about the role of the sculptural display in the urban space during the Hellenistic period. The paper focuses on two study cases from Tindari and Solunto respectively. Thanks to the investigation of overlooked archival documents and historiography, it has been possible to single out the monumental contexts of the sculptures. It is now quite certain that the two marble Nikai from Tyndaris come from the mid-19th century excavation at the theatre, perhaps from the paraskenia of the huge late Hellenistic scene building. The second part deals with the so-called Zeus of Solunto, its extant pieces and the puzzling remains of the sacred …
