Abstract Background Therapeutic vaccination is a novel treatment approach for chronic hepatitis B, but only had limited success so far. We hypothesized that optimized vaccination schemes have increased immunogenicity, and aimed at increasing therapeutic hepatitis B vaccine efficacy. Methods Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) expressing hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigens was used to boost protein-prime vaccinations in wildtype and HBV-transgenic (HBVtg) mice. Abstract The role of insects in pollination and consequently in fruit set and quality was assessed in two commercial orchards of the cactus pear, Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., in Agrigento Province, Sicily. In 1997, insects visiting flowers were sampled during May–June (the first bloom) and July (the second bloom, induced by the “scozzolatura” practise). More than 50 insect species belonging to 10 orders were collected in May–June, while only five species of Hymenoptera Apoidea were collected in July. Long-term data on the utilization of this follow-up care are relatively rare. Methods Information regarding the utilization of routine hospital follow-up care was retrieved from hospital documents of 662 patients treated for breast cancer. Abstract The German Children’s Cancer Registry (GCCR) has documented all malignancies during the first 15 years of life in Germany since 1980. In a series of 20 388 cancer cases to the end of 1995, 127 children with multiple primary neoplasms up to the age of 15 years were identified. The children were monitored for 82 591 person-years with a mean observation time of 4.1 years. Relative and cumulative risk for the occurrence of second malignant neoplasms were estimated only for the first 15 years of life, as follow-up data beyond childhood are incomplete and valid data on the incidence of cancer in adolescents and adults are not available in Germany.
