Ecological mechanisms can modify radiation effects in a key forest mammal of Chernobyl

2019

International audience; Nuclear accidents underpin the need to quantify the ecological mechanisms which determine injury to ecosystems from chronic low-dose radiation. Here, we tested the hypothesis that ecological mechanisms interact with ionizing radiation to affect natural populations in unexpected ways. We used large-scale replicated experiments and food manipulations in wild populations of the rodent, Myodes glareolus, inhabiting the region near the site of the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. We show linear decreases in breeding success with increasing ambient radiation levels with no evidence of any threshold below which effects are not seen. Food supplementation of experimental populatio…

Essential oil variability in a collection of Ocimum basilicum L. (basil) cultivars.

2016

Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic plant of great tradition in the Mediterranean area. Its economic importance is growing up determining an expansion of cultivation. This paper evaluated the morphological traits, the chemical profiles, and antibacterial activity of 21 cultivars of basil belonging to Ê»Genoveseʼ, Ê»Napoletanoʼ, and Ê»Purple basilʼ types. The cultivars were characterized by different growth rate and morphological traits. The chemical composition of the oils analyzed by GC and GC/MS analysis, supported by the PCA analysis, underlined the strong influence of chemotype. It is noteworthy that estragole, never present in Genovese and purple basil types, occurred in …

Heat hardening capacity in Drosophila melanogaster is life stage-specific and juveniles show the highest plasticity

2019

Variations in stress resistance and adaptive plastic responses during ontogeny have rarely been addressed, despite the possibility that differences between life stages can affect species' range margins and thermal tolerance. Here, we assessed the thermal sensitivity and hardening capacity of Drosophila melanogaster across developmental stages from larval to the adult stage. We observed strong differences between life stages in heat resistance, with adults being most heat resistant followed by puparia , pupae and larvae . The impact of heat hardening (1 h at 35°C) on heat resistance changed during ontogeny, with the highest positive effect of hardening observed in puparia and pupae and the …

Security Management in Electronic Health Records: Attitudes and Experiences Among Health Care Professionals

2018

Electronic health records play an important role for management, exchange and storage of information within health care organizations. Health care organizations are obliged to adopt strategies for information security and privacy associated with access to medical and sensitive information, but at the same time, the information needs to be available for authorized health care professionals carrying out patient treatment. This paper presents a study about attitudes and experiences among health care professionals towards security management in electronic health records. Qualitative research methods were used, with an initial literature review that was followed by observations and interviews wi…

Global sensitivity analysis in welding simulations -- what are the material data you really need ?

2011

In this paper, the sensitivity analysis methodology is applied to numerical welding simulation in order to rank the importance of input variables on the outputs of the code like distorsions or residual stresses. The numerical welding simulation uses the finite element method, with a thermal computation followed by a mechanical one. Classically, a local sensitivity analysis is performed, hence the validity of the results is limited to the neighbourhood of a nominal point, and cross effects cannot be detected. This study implements a global sensitivity analysis which allows to screen the whole material space of the steel family mechanical properties. A set of inputs of the mechanical model-ma…

On Detection of Network-Based Co-residence Verification Attacks in SDN-Driven Clouds

2017

Modern cloud environments allow users to consume computational and storage resources in the form of virtual machines. Even though machines running on the same cloud server are logically isolated from each other, a malicious customer can create various side channels to obtain sensitive information from co-located machines. In this study, we concentrate on timely detection of intentional co-residence attempts in cloud environments that utilize software-defined networking. SDN enables global visibility of the network state which allows the cloud provider to monitor and extract necessary information from each flow in every virtual network in online mode. We analyze the extracted statistics on d…

Constitutive activation of MexT by amino acid substitutions results in MexEF-OprN overproduction in clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

2018

ABSTRACT When overproduced, the multidrug efflux system MexEF-OprN increases the resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to fluoroquinolones, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim. In this work, we demonstrate that gain-of-function mutations in the regulatory gene mexT result in oligomerization of the LysR regulator MexT, constitutive upregulation of the efflux pump, and increased resistance in clinical isolates.

Role of AxyZ Transcriptional Regulator in Overproduction of AxyXY-OprZ Multidrug Efflux System in Achromobacter Species Mutants Selected by Tobramycin

2017

ABSTRACT AxyXY-OprZ is an RND-type efflux system that confers innate aminoglycoside resistance to Achromobacter spp. We investigated here a putative TetR family transcriptional regulator encoded by the axyZ gene located upstream of axyXY-oprZ . An in-frame axyZ gene deletion assay led to increased MICs of antibiotic substrates of the efflux system, including aminoglycosides, cefepime, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, and erythromycin, indicating that the product of axyZ negatively regulates expression of axyXY-oprZ . Moreover, we identified an amino acid substitution at position 29 of AxyZ (V29G) in a clinical Achromobacter strain that occurred during the course of chronic respiratory tract…

Body Mass Index and Associated Clinical Variables in Patients with Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity.

2019

Background: Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity (NCWS) is still a largely undefined condition, due to the lack of a diagnostic marker. Few data are available about the nutritional characteristics of NCWS patients at diagnosis. Aims: To evaluate the proportion of NCWS patients who were underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese at diagnosis, and to search for possible correlations between their Body Mass Index (BMI) and other NCWS-related disease characteristics. Patients and Methods: The clinical charts of 145 NCWS patients (125 F, 20 M, mean age 37.1 &plusmn
