Understanding a Cartesian graph using the motion sensor
2008
This paper shows the experimental results of a didactical activity conducted using the motion sensor. This MBL-tool (Microcomputers-Based Laboratory) allows to study rectilinear motion of bodies moving in front of it. In a fixed time interval the motion sensor reveals the distance of bodies from it and transmits the measures to a computer that visualizes the data in tabular and Cartesian representations. This research corroborates several works about the use of MBL-tools, according to which the use of the motion sensor allows the students to read, understand and produce kinematics graphs. Moreover our analysis shows that the students acquire these competence respect to graphs of other type …

Damming an electronic energy reservoir: ion-regulated electronic energy shuttling in a [2]rotaxane
2021
We demonstrate the first example of bidirectional reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) between the mechanically bonded components of a rotaxane. Our prototypical system was designed such that photoexcitation of a chromophore in the axle results in temporary storage of electronic energy in a quasi-isoenergetic “reservoir” chromophore in the macrocycle. Over time, the emissive state of the axle is repopulated from this reservoir, resulting in long-lived, delayed luminescence. Importantly, we show that cation binding in the cavity formed by the mechanical bond perturbs the axle chromophore energy levels, modulating the REET process, and ultimately providing a luminescence read-out of c…
Interaction of Neuronal Calcium Sensor-1 (NCS-1) with Phosphatidylinositol 4-Kinase β Stimulates Lipid Kinase Activity and Affects Membrane Trafficki…
2001
Phosphatidylinositol 4-kinases (PI4K) catalyze the first step in the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, an important lipid regulator of several cellular functions. Here we show that the Ca(2+)-binding protein, neuronal calcium sensor-1 (NCS-1), can physically associate with the type III PI4Kbeta with functional consequences affecting the kinase. Recombinant PI4Kbeta, but not its glutathione S-transferase-fused form, showed enhanced PI kinase activity when incubated with recombinant NCS-1, but only if the latter was myristoylated. Similarly, in vitro translated NCS-1, but not its myristoylation-defective mutant, was found associated with recombinant- or in vitro translated P…
Inmediato y after effects de transcraneal direct-current stimulation in mouse primary somatosensory cortex.
2021
Transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique consisting in the application of weak electric currents on the scalp. Although previous studies have demonstrated the clinical value of tDCS for modulating sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, there are still huge gaps in the knowledge of the underlying physiological mechanisms. To define the immediate impact as well as the after effects of tDCS on sensory processing, we first performed electrophysiological recordings in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of alert mice during and after administration of S1-tDCS, and followed up with immunohistochemical analysis of the stimulated brain regions. Du…

Current advancement in electrochemical analysis of neurotransmitters in biological fluids
2017
Abstract Analysis of neurotransmitters is useful for the diagnosis of central nervous system diseases. This review gives a general view of recent advances in the development of electrochemical sensors for detection/determination of neurotransmitters. The purpose of the review is to provide useful insights in terms of ( a ) choice of materials, ( b ) methods/techniques preferably applied, ( c ) immobilization procedures, and ( d ) other practical aspects. Following an introduction into the field, we give a short account on the principle and general types of electrochemical sensors, and then treat sensing methods for neurotransmitters. It is subdivided into sections on ( i ) Dopamine ( ii ) A…
Red and far-red sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence as a measure of plant photosynthesis
2015
Remote estimation of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unparalleled opportunity to track spatiotemporal variations of photosynthetic efficiency. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence that the two peaks of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum can be accurately mapped from high-resolution radiance spectra and that the signal is linked to variations in actual photosynthetic efficiency. Red and far red fluorescence measured using a novel airborne imaging spectrometer over a grass carpet treated with an herbicide known to inhibit photosynthesis was significantly higher than the corresponding signal from an equivalent untreated…
Molecular association and dynamics in n-pentanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol
1985
Static dielectric constant, viscosity, density, ultrasonic and dielectric relaxation measurements are reported for two pentanol isomers (n-pentanol and 2-methyl-2-butanol) in a wide range of temperatures. The results show a different extent of H-bonds self-association in relation to the molecular geometry of the alcohol. The activation energies obtained from dielectric and ultrasonic studies are compared with those obtained from viscous flow. Such a comparison, together with the analysis of all the dielectric and ultrasonic relaxation data, show that in n-pentanol a correlation between viscosity and ultrasonic relaxation exists, while dielectric relaxation is not correlated with the other t…
