In-line fiber-optic sensors based on the excitation of surface plasma modes in metal-coated tapered fibers

Abstract Metal-coated tapered fibers are reported as refractive index sensors based on the resonant excitation of surface plasma modes supported by the metal coating. The devices are easy to fabricate and constitute an alternative to metal-coated side-polished fibers and to other sensors made up of bulk components. We report the fabrication and power transmission properties of quasi-circular devices and asymmetric devices. Both sets of devices can be operated as wavelength output sensors, as well as amplitude output sensors. The transmittance of quasi-circular devices is polarization independent and it changes more than 30 dB as a function of external refractive index.

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique is an optical method that can be used to measure the refractive index of organic nano-layers adsorbed on a thin metal film. Although there are many techniques for measuring biomolecular interactions, SPR-based techniques play a central role in many current biosensing experiments, since they are most suited to sensitive and quantitative kinetic measurements. Audio-video people recognition system for an intelligent environment

In this paper an audio-video system for intelligent environments with the capability to recognize people is presented. Users are tracked inside the environment and their positions and activities can be logged. Users identities are assessed through a multimodal approach by detecting and recognizing voices and faces through the different cameras and microphones installed in the environment. Physicochemical and technological properties of beef burger as influenced by the addition of pea fibre

This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and sensory attributes of beef burgers with the addition of pea fibre as a partial substitute of meat or fat. Three formulations were prepared: control (CON) – similar to the commercial formulation; fibre/less meat (FLM)—5% meat reduction and addition of 1% pea fibre; fibre/less fat (FLF)—7% fat reduction and addition of 1% pea fibre. Non‐significant differences were obtained for pH, colour parameters (L* and b*), texture profile, cooking loss and size reduction among formulations. Smart camera design for intensive embedded computing

Computer-assisted vision plays an important role in our society, in various fields such as personal and goods safety, industrial production, telecommunications, robotics, etc. However, technical developments are still rare and slowed down by various factors linked to sensor cost, lack of system flexibility, difficulty of rapidly developing complex and robust applications, and lack of interaction among these systems themselves, or with their environment. This paper describes our proposal for a smart camera with real-time video processing capabilities. A CMOS sensor, processor and, reconfigurable unit associated in the same chip will allow scalability, flexibility, and high performance.

SADmote: A Robust and Cost-Effective Device for Environmental Monitoring

Time to deployment for wireless sensor networks could be reduced by using commercial sensor nodes. However, this may lead to suboptimal flexibility, power consumption and cost of the system. Our pilot deployment for precision agriculture and fruit growing research showed similar conclusions and outlined the design decisions leading to SADmote: a new sensor node for environmental monitoring. It was evaluated both in the lab and field, showing improved energy consumption over commercial solutions such as Tmote Sky and Waspmote.
