Long-termism e short-termism nella ricerca di strategie di sostenibilità

2021

The focus of legislators, authorities and academics on the temporal dimension of sus-tainable actions has led to the progressive re-emerge of the contrast between long-termism and short-termism, that is frequent indeed in corporate law. The orientation to long-term decisions and attempts to stem the short-term ones have been a main point of recent legislative measures on this topic. This paper aims to critically re-evaluate the above contrast, highlighting some of the most relevant areas that most need regulatory interventions and suggesting abandon-ing the frequent short-term disfavor.

Aging and prospective memory: the role of working memory and monitoring processes

2008

Background and aims: Remembering to execute an earlier planned action is essential in everyday life, and is a prerequisite for independent living in old age. The purpose of the present study was to determine the influence of age in performing a prospective memory (PM) task and to analyze the differential contribution of working memory and attentional monitoring demands. Methods: In Experiment 1, a group of young and two groups of old adults were assigned to one of two low-demanding conditions: a picture-naming task (only-Naming) and a picture-naming plus a PM task (Naming+PM). In Experiment 2, a group of young and two groups of old adults performed one of two high-demanding conditions, in w…

The Effects of Short-Term Personal Goals on Subjective Well-Being

2015

Several studies demonstrated that subjective well-being is associated with goal value and perceived progress but their validity is affected by methodological biases. Moreover, a few have analysed the influence of short-term goals. We aimed to analyse how the levels of and changes in short-term goals progress and value influence subsequent levels of and changes in subjective well-being. This study adopted a three-wave longitudinal design with one-month intervals. Four hundred nine participants (186 males; age 19–71) reported their subjective well-being and their two most important goals and rated each over time in terms of value and progress. A latent difference score model revealed that lev…

Air quality and integration of short-term and long-term pollutant data

2008

Modelling PM10 is an important problem in statistical methodology, above all to explain the PM10 behaviour in space and time, since it has been linked to many adverse effects on human and environmental health. But the large spatial variability of the main traffic-related pollutants, and in particular here the PM10, implies the impossibility of obtaining from the data of the fixed stations a complete pictures of the atmospheric pollution in the urban areas. Information from fixed monitoring stations (long-term measurements) are therefore integrated with the ones deriving from mobile station (short-term measurements). Short-term measurements are incomplete and so it is necessary to integrate …

Repetition priming: Is music special?

2005

Using short and long contexts, the present study investigated musical priming effects that are based on chord repetition and harmonic relatedness. A musical target (a chord) was preceded by either an identical prime or a different but harmonically related prime. In contrast to words, pictures, and environmental sounds, chord processing was not facilitated by repetition. Experiments 1 and 2 using single-chord primes showed either no significant difference between chord repetition and harmonic relatedness or facilitated processing for harmonically related targets. Experiment 3 using longer prime contexts showed that musical priming depended more on the musical function of the target in the p…

Boosting working memory with accelerated clocks

2021

Our perception of time varies with the degree of cognitive engagement in tasks. The perceived passage of time accelerates while working on demanding tasks, whereas time appears to drag during boring situations. Our experiment aimed at investigating whether this relationship is mutual: Can manipulated announcements of elapsed time systematically affect the attentional resources applied to a cognitive task? We measured behavioral performance and the EEG in a whole report working memory paradigm with six items of different colors that each had to be reported after a short delay period. The 32 participants were informed about the current time after each 20 trials, while the clock was running at…

THE ECONOMIC INTERVENTION STRATEGY OF THE INTERNATIONAL NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN PALESTINE. A CASE STUDY: THE SHORT-TERM EMPLOYMENT PROJECTS

Many countries around the world, both developed and developing, are characterized by high level of unemployment. This phenomenon has profound implications not only for economic activity, by limiting the amount of labour supply and therefore potential output, but also for political and social unrest, as the experience of many Middle-Eastern and North-African economies has recently shown. Unemployment is particularly relevant for Palestine. Indeed, since the mid-1990s, Palestine is one of the countries in the world with the highest rate of unemployment. Persistently high unemployment reflect several characteristics of the Palestinian economy, mostly important the dependence on the Israeli's e…

Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: a follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade.

2004

Sprugevica, I. & Hoien, T. (2004). Relations between enabling skills and reading comprehension: A follow-up study of Latvian students from first to second grade. Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 45, 115–122. In order to examine the relationships among various phonological skills and reading comprehension, Latvian children were followed from grade 1 to grade 2 and were tested with a battery of phonological, word reading, and reading comprehension tasks. A principal component analysis of the phonological tasks revealed three salient factors: a phonemic awareness factor, a rapid naming factor, and a short-term memory factor. In order to analyze the relationship between various phonological …

Memory degradation induced by attention in recurrent neural architectures

2022

This paper studies the memory mechanisms in recurrent neural architectures when attention models are included. Pure-attention models like Transformers are more and more popular as they tend to outperform models with recurrent connections in many different tasks. Our conjecture is that attention prevents the recurrent connections from transferring information properly between consecutive next steps. This conjecture is empirically tested using five different models, namely, a model without attention, a standard Loung attention model, a standard Bahdanau attention model, and our proposal to add attention to the inputs in order to fill the gap between recurrent and parallel architectures (for b…
