Sphincter damage during fistulotomy for perianal fistulae and its relationship with faecal incontinence.
2021
Abstract Background The length of sphincter which can be divided during fistulotomy for perianal fistula is unclear. The aim was to quantify sphincter damage during fistulotomy and determine the relationship between such damage with symptoms and severity of faecal incontinence and long-term quality of life (QOL). Methods A prospective cohort study was performed over a 2-year period. Patients with intersphincteric and mid to low transsphincteric perianal fistulas without risk factors for faecal incontinence were scheduled for fistulotomy. All patients underwent 3D endoanal ultrasound (3D-EAUS) pre-operatively and 8 weeks postoperatively. Measurements were taken of pre- and postoperative anal…
Indirect estimation of stomach volume of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)
2005
The main hypothesis of this study was that if stomach volume is correlated with food intake it can be estimated without laborious and destructive direct measurement. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), ca. 500^1300 g, were starved for 1, 4, 8 or16 days at151C after which they were fed in excess with dry pellets containing known amounts of X-raydense markers. Immediately after feeding the ¢sh were killed, X rayed and weighed. Then the stomach was dissected, its contents removed and weighed, and stomach volume was measured. X-ray plates were developed and feed intake was estimated based on the amount of marker. All measured variables correlated positively with stomach volume. The be…
Incidence of Staphylococcus aureus in meals from cafeterias
2002
A study to determine the incidence of Staphylococccus aureus in 705 meals from several cafeterias in Valencia, Spain was undertaken. Out of the 705 studied meals, 81 samples (I I. I %) had coagulase positive staphylococci with a range of S. aureus from 100 to 53000 cfu/g. me four highest values (> l0,ooO S. aureus &/g) were obtained with Russian type salad, meatballs, chicken croquettes and salad. These products involved more handling stages. These data show that food handlers may contribute to food poisoning and that there are some handling practices that require more attention.
Ultrasonography and gastric emptying: evaluation in infants with gastroesophageal reflux.
1992
We have applied ultrasonography to the evaluation of gastric emptying in children. Two different populations have been investigated: normal children and children with gastroesophageal reflux. All the patients were less than 6 months of age. The diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux was defined by 24-h pH measurement. The technique, used to measure gastric emptying, is the one described by Bolondi et al. In this research we used the simplified method. All children had been submitted to the examination after 4-h fasting. The standard meal was the usual milk formula, 300 ml/m2 body surface area (BSA). A cross-section area of the gastric antrum was determined before a meal and every 15 min for 2…
Diagnostik eines hochmalignen B-Zell-Lymphoms des Dünndarms mit der Kapselendoskopie
2003
Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new diagnostic procedure to detect diseases of the small bowel, in particular in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. We report on a 76-year-old patient who presented at our hospital with signs of gastrointestinal bleeding and hypochromic anaemia. Bidirectional endoscopy, push enteroscopy, angiography as well as small bowel barium enema rendered no pathologic findings. Wireless capsule endoscopy demonstrated a polypous space in the cantral area of the small bowel. Subsequent intraoperative endoscopy revealed a subtotal stenosing tumour of the upper jejunum which was resected. Based on the histology a high-grade B-Cell lymphoma was diagnosed. The p…
Association between CCK-AR gene and schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations
2007
[Objective]: Previous studies on a possible association between CCK-AR polymorphisms and schizophrenia have been controversial. The aim of the present study was to assess a potential association between schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations and polymorphisms of the CCK-AR gene.
Labeling and nutritional education
2020
Abstract Nutritional food labeling has two components, a nutrient declaration on the back-of-package (usually mandatory) and supplementary simple graphical nutrition information on the front-of-package (commonly voluntary), which are aimed at assisting consumers to be aware of the nutritional value of foods in order to make healthy food choices. This is an important tool for nutritional education that can aid consumers in the fight against diet-related chronic diseases that currently constitute a global public health concern worldwide. In this chapter, the main factors involved in the use and understanding of nutrition labels by consumers, and a detailed explanation of the characteristics o…
Comparison of the main oesophageal pathophysiological characteristics between short- and long-segment Barrett's oesophagus
2002
Aim: To assess the oesophageal manometric characteristics and 24-h pH profiles of patients with both short-segment and long-segment Barrett's oesophagus and compare them with those of patients with reflux oesophagitis and controls. Methods: Seventy-nine patients who had undergone upper digestive endoscopy were recruited: 16 had short-segment Barrett's oesophagus, 13 had long-segment Barrett's oesophagus, 25 had grade III oesophagitis according to the Savary–Miller classification and 25 were used as controls. The diagnosis of Barrett's oesophagus was based on the histological detection of specialized intestinal metaplasia, which extended 3 cm in patients with long-segment disease. All subje…
Peripheral Changes in Blood Circulation during Autogenic Training and Hypnosis (Results of Experimental Research)
1969
In addition to the immobilization of the limbs and the associated sensation of heaviness, most patients in a hypnotic trance also experience a sensation of warmth. This subjective feeling is probably accompanied by increased skin temperature. Attempts have been made in the past to record skin temperature objectively. Most methods of measurement, however, are so defective that they have only rarely proved at all reliable. Hensel (1955, 1964) and his colleagues have described seven variables whose range is so great that the statistical evaluation of such measurements becomes impossible, even though the data may be valid in individual cases. Furthermore, graphic recording is also impracticable…
Gastrin: an acid-releasing, proliferative and immunomodulatory peptide?
2010
Gastrin release is affected by gastric inflammatory conditions. Antral G cells respond to inflammatory mediators by increasing gastrin secretion. Accumulating experimental evidence suggests that gastrin exerts immunomodulatory and proinflammatory effects. Gastrin could be a contributing factor to these pathologies, which may constitute a new justification for pharmacological blockade of gastrin action.
