The Role of Diffusion Accommodation and Phase Boundary Wetting in the Deformation Behaviour of Ultrafine Grained Sn-Pb Eutectic
2010
Mechanical properties, microstructure of the Sn–38wt. %Pb eutectic and the development of deformation - induced diffusion processes on interphase boundaries (IB) were investigated. Experiments were carried out both in deformed and annealed states of eutectic using micro- and nanoindentation, SEM, AFM and optical microscopy techniques. It was found that the deformation of the annealed alloy is localized at the Pb/Sn interphase boundaries and occurs by grain boundary sliding (GBS) accompanied by sintering micropore processes under the action of the capillary forces on the Pb/Sn IB. During severe plastic deformation of Sn-Pb eutectic phase transition in the Sn grain boundary occurs. This defor…
A novel soft-stall power control for a small wind turbine
2017
In this paper, the problem of Soft-stall power control design for a small wind turbine is considered. Passive stalling and furling methods are widely used to limit the output power of small wind turbines at above-rated wind speed conditions. However, these methods have substantial limitations, for instance, related to tracking the maximum power at some wind speed levels, limited variable speed operation and introducing unbalanced forces on wind turbine blades. Soft-stall power control is a promising technique to overcome above limitations and improve the performance of small wind turbines. Small wind turbines have a comparatively low moment of inertia value, and it is possible to make fast …
A model for SFRC beams without shear reinforcement
2008
In this paper a physical model, for the prediction of ultimate shear strength of Steel Fibers Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) beams is developed from the plastic Crack Sliding Model (CSM) introduced by Zhang (1997), based on the hypothesis that cracks can be transformed into yield lines. In this work the effectiveness factors are recalculated for SFRC beams and some further developments are introduced in the CSM, taking into account the fundamental post cracking tensile strength contribute of SFRC. The proposed model is validate by a large set of tests collected in literature and some numerical analyses were carried out to show the influence of fibers on the failure beams mode.
Innovative Observers for Induction Motor Control
In this thesis the problem of designing observers and controllers for induction motors has been studied and thoroughly discussed using tools from the nonlinear system theory, both for analysis and control purposes. Useful techniques have been used to identify the machine parameters off-line. In the Introduction was dealt the design a control system for a drive of asynchronous machines that uses a voltage source inverter to generate the currents and voltages which carry the drive by making use of an observer of the state rotor variables. The used control algorithms is the \textit{field oriented control} (FOC). The model of the asynchronous induction motor is described starting from the mecha…
Il caso Mortier c. Belgique. L’eutanasia conseguente a sofferenze psichiche
2023
Stress induced grain boundary migration in very soluble brittle salt
1999
Abstract Grain boundary migration (GBM) was studied in-situ at room temperature, atmospheric pressure and an applied diffmfwerential stress of ∼9.5 MPa under the optical microscope, in a wet aggregate of an elastic-brittle salt (sodium chlorate). The aggregate was previously deformed predominantly by a combination of grain boundary sliding, pressure solution and cataclastic solution creep. After deformation, but when the sample was still under differential stress, undeformed, fracture-free grains were observed to grow at the cost of deformed, intensely fractured grains. GMB rates typically fell in the range 2--10 μm/day. GBM took place only as long as the sample was under stress. Boundaries…
A sliding mode approach to H∞ synchronization of master–slave time-delay systems with Markovian jumping parameters and nonlinear uncertainties
2012
Author's version of an article published in the journal: Journal of the Franklin Institute. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jfranklin.2011.09.015 In this paper, a sliding-mode approach is proposed for exponential H∞ synchronization problem of a class of masterslave time-delay systems with both discrete and distributed time-delays, norm-bounded nonlinear uncertainties and Markovian switching parameters. Using an appropriate LyapunovKrasovskii functional, some delay-dependent sufficient conditions and a synchronization law, which include the masterslave parameters are established for designing a delay-dependent mode-dependent sliding mode exponential H∞ synch…
Robust H∞ sliding mode control with pole placement for a fluid power electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) system
2014
Published version of an article in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-014-5910-8 In this paper, we exploit the sliding mode control problem for a fluid power electrohydraulic actuator (EHA) system. To characterize the nonlinearity of the friction, the EHA system is modeled as a linear system with a system uncertainty. Practically, it is assumed that the system is also subject to the load disturbance and the external noise. An integral sliding mode controller is proposed to design. The advanced techniques such as the H ∞ control and the regional pole placement are employed to derive t…
How does shear zone nucleate? An example from the Suretta nappe (Swiss Eastern Alps)
2016
In order to address the question of the processes involved during shear zone nucleation, we present a petro-structural analysis of millimetre-scale shear zones within the Roffna rhyolite (Suretta nappe, Eastern central Alps). Field and microscopic evidences show that ductile deformation is localized along discrete fractures that represent the initial stage of shear zone nucleation. During incipient brittle deformation, a syn-kinematic metamorphic assemblage of white mica + biotite + epidote + quartz precipitated at ca. 8.5 ± 1 kbar and 480 ± 50 °C that represent the metamorphic peak conditions of the nappe stacking in the continental accretionary wedge during Tertiary Alpine subduction. The…
