FACEBOOK AT THE TIME OF "DIGITAL NATIVES": TEACHING SPANISH THROUGH SOCIAL NETWORKS

2015

Language acquisition is a process which is influenced by cognitive, attitudinal, demographic, linguistic and experiential factors. At the time of globalization, structural change occurred with the advent of the technological revolution, the subsequent introduction of innovative tools in teaching, have transformed the concept of learning. At the web's century youngers, "digital natives", are creating a kind of "parallel school" not only to access to knowledge, to collaborate with users and discuss, but also to teach and learn languages through social networks, blogs, fora and communities, as if they were in a virtual classroom. As to the acquisition of Spanish as a L2, analysing the most rec…

Studying micro-communities in Facebook Communities

2018

In the visionary view of the future Internet, named the Next Generation Internet, a current idea is to have a user-centric approach where human behavior models will be used to define the networks or to manage services. During the last years, a great trend in current Social Media platforms is to offer the opportunity to establish and join groups of people online. Despite human behaviour in current Online Social Media have been studied in depth, characteristics of these aggregations of people in content-based communities are still unknown. In this paper, we propose an evaluation of micro-communities of users inside the big network of Facebook groups to understand how and when users are active…

Identifying the k Best Targets for an Advertisement Campaign via Online Social Networks

2020

We propose a novel approach for the recommendation of possible customers (users) to advertisers (e.g., brands) based on two main aspects: (i) the comparison between On-line Social Network profiles, and (ii) neighborhood analysis on the On-line Social Network. Profile matching between users and brands is considered based on bag-of-words representation of textual contents coming from the social media, and measures such as the Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency are used in order to characterize the importance of words in the comparison. The approach has been implemented relying on Big Data Technologies, allowing this way the efficient analysis of very large Online Social Networks. Resul…

Sociālo tīklu lietošanas paradumu atšķirības latviešu un igauņu jauniešu auditorijā: Valkas/Valgas piemērs

2015

Taking care of everyone’s business: interpreting Sicilian Mafia embedment through spatial network analysis

2022

Mafia-type organisations often have a strong geographical and cultural entrenchment in the territory they belong. However, their analysis as a spatially networked social structure is still missing. A combined socio-spatial network analysis is presented here, through the demise of a large police operation called Operazione Perseo in 2008. This approach is developed in two ways. At first, a visual representation of the social network of this large group of mafiosi embedded in a geographical space is presented. Three main salient territorial features of the network are thus highlighted. A high density of links in some neighbourhoods, as well as connections across different Mandamenti, the terr…

Conflict and segregation in networks: An experiment on the interplay between individual preferences and social influence

2016

We examine the interplay between a person's individual preference and the social influence others exert. We provide a model of network relationships with conflicting preferences, where individuals are better off coordinating with those around them, but where not all have a preference for the same action. We test our model in an experiment, varying the level of conflicting preferences between individuals. Our findings suggest that preferences are more salient than social influence, under conflicting preferences: subjects relate mainly with others who have the same preferences. This leads to two undesirable outcomes: network segregation and social inefficiency. The same force that helps peopl…

The impact of user’s availability on On-line Ego Networks: a Facebook analysis

2016

We have defined and implemented a Facebook application to log a Facebook dataset. We have studied and validated the structural properties of the whole dataset and of the Dunbar ego networks. We have analyzed the interactions of the users. The availability of the users in the Dunbar ego networks have been investigated. Our results reveal the presence of the temporal homophily property in the Dunbar ego networks. Online Social Networks (OSNs) are the most popular applications in todays Internet and they have changed the way people interact with each other. Understanding the structural properties of OSNs and, in particular, how users behave when they connect to OSNs is crucial for designing user-c…

An Analysis of the Internal Organization of Facebook Groups

2019

With the rapid development and growth of online social networks (OSNs), researchers have been pushed forward to improve the knowledge of these complex networks by analyzing several aspects, such as the types of social media, the structural properties of the network, or the interaction patterns among users. In particular, a relevant effort has been devoted to the study and identification of cohesive groups of users in OSNs (also referred as communities) because they are the basic building block of each OSN. While several research works on groups in OSNs have mainly focused on identifying the types of groups and the contents created by their members, the analysis of internal organizations of …

Subjectivity on the Web: The Case of Social Networks and the H1N1 emergency

2010

Blogs are extensively used for personal accounts and news reports. In particular, health blogs can be considered as both information sources and communication channels be- tween Science and Society, since they face the growing need for information among non-insiders. This study is concerned with the dimension of reality portrayed in blog comment en- tries; focusing particularly on participants'' representation of facts and their commit- ment to the truth of the proposition. The framework for this study has been shaped by the typologies in Chafe (1986), Willett (1988), Van der Auwera and Plungian (1998), Plungian (2001), Marìn (2002, 2004). Data are taken from three health and science we- bl…

A Logical Key Hierarchy Based approach to preserve content privacy in Decentralized Online Social Networks

2020

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have been proposed to shift the control over user data from a unique entity, the online social network provider, to the users of the DOSN themselves. In this paper we focus on the problem of preserving the privacy of the contents shared to large groups of users. In general, content privacy is enforced by encrypting the content, having only authorized parties being able to decrypt it. When efficiency has to be taken into account, new solutions have to be devised that: i) minimize the re-encryption of the contents published in a group when the composition of the group changes; and, ii) enable a fast distribution of the cryptographic keys to all the m…
