Working with children who are victims of abuse: Emotions and representations of professionals in residential children's communities

2020

Professionals who work in residential children’s communities face many difficulties and, when the hosted children have a history of abuse and maltreatment, the risk of vicarious traumatization and professional burn-out, which has a negative effect on the professional’s work and well-being as well as on the effectiveness at work, is very high. This qualitative study aims to explore, via the content analysis of text recorded in some Photolangage® groups, the representations of social workers and educators in residential children’s communities on the theme of work management of physical and sexual abuse victims. Bridging the Gaps: Literacy, Media Literacy Education, and Critical Digital Social Work

2021

Drawing from literacy studies and research in media literacy education, this article contends that a series of conceptual gaps need to be bridged in order to have a better understanding of how these traditions can contribute to redefining the field of digital social work. The field of digital social work should move towards a more critical-oriented dimension so that digital media and the internet should not simply be considered (as is often the case), as mere tools to improve the professionality of social workers, but rather as life environments and systems of representation shaping individuals’ identities and social relationships.

“GENDER NEUTRALITY” E “GENDER SEGREGATION” IN UNA PROFESSIONE TRADIZIONALMENTE FEMMINILE

2016

Introduction. Social Work with newcomers: entering into the field

2021

For about thirty years, Sicily has assumed the role of a gateway from Africa to Europe, acting as a bridge between cultures, ethnic groups and religions. When we talk about immigration in Sicily, therefore, we are referring to a structural reality, which the island's inhabitants have generally accepted with a sense of hospitality and openness. It is an interesting observation point from which it is possible to look at the social and political implications generated by immigration movements in the understanding of contemporary migration phenomena.

Utilizing ICT to prevent loneliness and social isolation of the elderly. A literature review

2016

Ageing of the population is a worldwide phenomenon. Numerous ICT-based solutions have been developed for elderly care but mainly connected to the physiological and nursing aspects in services for the elderly. Social work is a profession that should pay attention to the comprehensive wellbeing and social needs of the elderly. Many people experience loneliness and depression in their old age, either as a result of living alone or due to a lack of close family ties and reduced connections with their culture of origin, which results in an inability to participate actively in community activities (Singh & Misra, 2009). Participation in society would enhance the quality of life. With the deve…

A broadening horizon: intervention in the field of migration as a path towards internationalization for Italian social work

2022

Due to a significant increase in migration flows to Italy over the last four decades, professional social work in Italy has been confronted with the ‘internationalization of social problems’ (Dominelli 2010) over these forty years. This fast and prolific process of immigration has forced institutions to deal with issues for which our society, policies, and service system, have not been properly prepared. This highlights the need to provide updated training to social workers regarding the ‘trans‐cultural approach’, to facilitate understanding of the meanings and the cultural models and the processes of care and assistance. Despite a substantial and well‐established commitment in the area of …

2017
