The chapter discusses the history, dilemmas and future visions of Development Studies in Tanzania, especially from the perspective of Institute of Development Studies in the University of Dar es Salaam. It shows how in the 1970s Development Studies played a significant role in the consolidation of state ideology of African socialism among university students, and since then, has gradually evolved into a recognized discipline with MA and PhD programmes. The article presents Ricarda Huchs attitude towards the dictatorship of natio- nal socialism in Germany, from which the writer officially disbanded herself in 1933 by resigning from the membership of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts and concluding at the same time that the Germanness in her opinion does not mean centralization of power, brutal methods and diffusion of people who think differently. This attitude is reflected in the autobiographical text of 1938, Friihling in der Schweiz [Spring in Switzerland] which refers to the experiences and observations of the writer during her stay in Switzerland in 1887-1896. The disappearance of the so-called «real socialism» has concealed the validity of the Marxist analysis of social reality. One of the sets of hypotheses that has best maintained its heuristic capacity is the Marxist theory of needs. The Marxist hypotheses have been developed in debate with other conventional conceptions. Currently, feminism and the ecological analysis of needs are renewing the views of Heller and Habermas.
