Packing polydisperse colloids into crystals: when charge-dispersity matters

2019

Monte-Carlo simulations and small-angle x-ray scattering experiments were used to determine the phase diagram of aqueous dispersions of titratable nano-colloids with a moderate size polydispersity over a broad range of monovalent salt concentrations, 0.5 mM $\leq c_s \leq$ 50 mM and volume fractions, $\phi$. Under slow and progressive increase in $\phi$, the dispersions freeze into a face-centered-cubic (fcc) solid followed unexpectedly by the formation of a body centered cubic (bcc) phase before to melt in a glass forming liquid. The simulations are found to predict very well these observations. They suggest that the stabilization of the bcc solid at the expense of the fcc phase at high $\…

Rapid prototyping platform for stream-oriented reconfigurable computing applications

2010

In this paper we present a methodology and tool for rapid prototyping of real time image processing applications. We describe our design flow of multiprocessor system on chip (MPSoC) architectures based on hardware/software components. This methodology provides automated methods to specify, generate the hardware, software, and the architectural interfaces between them. Our methodology starts from system level specification of the application with parallel processes described in C-code. The processes communicate through an abstract channel called streams. We describe also the solution that we proposed to synthesize a custom bus architecture for the reconfigurable computing applications, whic…

NVMM-Oriented Hierarchical Persistent Client Caching for Lustre

2021

In high-performance computing (HPC), data and metadata are stored on special server nodes and client applications access the servers’ data and metadata through a network, which induces network latencies and resource contention. These server nodes are typically equipped with (slow) magnetic disks, while the client nodes store temporary data on fast SSDs or even on non-volatile main memory (NVMM). Therefore, the full potential of parallel file systems can only be reached if fast client side storage devices are included into the overall storage architecture. In this article, we propose an NVMM-based hierarchical persistent client cache for the Lustre file system (NVMM-LPCC for short). NVMM-LPC…

Fifty Years of PMV Model: Reliability, Implementation and Design of Software for Its Calculation

2019

In most countries, PMV is the reference index for the assessment of thermal comfort conditions in mechanically conditioned environments. It is also the basis to settle input values of the operative temperature for heating and cooling load calculations, sizing of equipment, and energy calculations according to EN 16798-1 and 16798-2 Standards. Over the years, great effort has been spent to study the reliability of PMV, whereas few investigations were addressed to its calculation. To study this issue, the most significant apps devoted to its calculation have been compared with a reference software compliant with EN ISO 7730 and the well-known ASHRAE Thermal Comfort Tool. It has been revealed …

3D Reconstruction of Dynamic Vehicles using Sparse 3D-Laser-Scanner and 2D Image Fusion

2016

International audience; Map building becomes one of the most interesting research topic in computer vision field nowadays. To acquire accurate large 3D scene reconstructions, 3D laser scanners are recently developed and widely used. They produce accurate but sparse 3D point clouds of the environments. However, 3D reconstruction of rigidly moving objects along side with the large-scale 3D scene reconstruction is still lack of interest in many researches. To achieve a detailed object-level 3D reconstruction, a single scan of point cloud is insufficient due to their sparsity. For example, traditional Iterative Closest Point (ICP) registration technique or its variances are not accurate and rob…

Soft tissue sarcoma in Italy: From epidemiological data to clinical networking to improve patient care and outcomes

2019

Sarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms that develop from mesenchymal cells and include a heterogeneous and large group of histological subtypes that may occur at any anatomical site. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS), the focus of this review, account for ≈70‒80% of sarcomas and represent <1% of all cancers. The heterogeneity of STS applies to both their topography and morphology, and 5-year survival can vary widely depending on disease stage and the complex interplay between anatomical site and histology for different STS subtypes. The rarity and heterogeneity of STS, together with other factors, such as the lack of clinical expertise often lead to difficulties and delays in making an accurate …

Comparison of problem solving tools in lean organizations

2017

As global market competition is getting fiercer, and companies are looking at ways to stay on top, more and more organizations are looking at Lean Manufacturing and lean tools to support them in achieving their goals. Especially within the automotive industry, lean practices are very well received. The speed at which the automotive industry is evolving, especially but not only, in countries like Romania, leads to the need to carefully analyze lean manufacturing concepts, examine them against local production conditions, and to develop and standardize them. One of the most important things to take into consideration here is the application of an adequate problem solving technique to avoid wa…

Multi-State System in human reliability analysis

2009

Application of mathematical model of Multi-State System for human reliability analysis is considered in the paper. This paper describes new method for estimation of changes of more than one component states and they influence to Multi-State System reliability by Dynamic Reliability Indices. The Multi-State System failure is considered depending on decrease of some system component efficiency and the Multi-State System repair is declared depending on replacement of some failed components. The mathematical approach of Logical Differential Calculus is used for analysis of the Multi-State System reliability change that is caused by modifications of some system components states.

Le culte en quête de signes. Une lecture de la campagne du « Denier de l’Église »

2010

Using a semiotic approach, this article analyses the communication actions of the Catholic Church, from a de-centred point of view. Indeed, rather than focusing on the communicational values of the evangelical message, we examine the way that the Church communicates outside its institutional and spiritual sphere, in the profane world of the media, through the example of the "campagne du Denier" fundraising campaign. This is both a fundraising activity, and a message aimed at Catholics, in a sector - public charity and donations - which is highly competitive. As a result, the Church must (re)define its position, the public that it constructs through its discourse, and its discourse itself, i…

A novel soft-stall power control for a small wind turbine

2017

In this paper, the problem of Soft-stall power control design for a small wind turbine is considered. Passive stalling and furling methods are widely used to limit the output power of small wind turbines at above-rated wind speed conditions. However, these methods have substantial limitations, for instance, related to tracking the maximum power at some wind speed levels, limited variable speed operation and introducing unbalanced forces on wind turbine blades. Soft-stall power control is a promising technique to overcome above limitations and improve the performance of small wind turbines. Small wind turbines have a comparatively low moment of inertia value, and it is possible to make fast …
