GESTALT-INSPIRED FEATURES EXTRACTION FOR OBJECT CATEGORY RECOGNITION
2013
International audience; We propose a methodology inspired by Gestalt laws to ex- tract and combine features and we test it on the object cat- egory recognition problem. Gestalt is a psycho-visual the- ory of Perceptual Organization that aims to explain how vi- sual information is organized by our brain. We interpreted its laws of homogeneity and continuation in link with shape and color to devise new features beyond the classical proxim- ity and similarity laws. The shape of the object is analyzed based on its skeleton (good continuation) and as a measure of homogeneity, we propose self-similarity enclosed within shape computed at super-pixel level. Furthermore, we pro- pose a framework to …
Controlled assembly of single colloidal crystals using electro-osmotic micro-pumps.
2017
We assemble charged colloidal spheres at deliberately chosen locations on a charged unstructured glass substrate utilizing ion exchange based electro-osmotic micro-pumps. Using microscopy, a simple scaling theory and Brownian Dynamics simulations, we systematically explore the control parameters of crystal assembly and the mechanisms through which they depend on the experimental boundary conditions. We demonstrate that crystal quality depends crucially on the assembly distance of the colloids. This is understood as resulting from the competition between inward transport by the electro-osmotic pump flow and the electro-phoretic outward motion of the colloids. Optimized conditions include sub…
OpenMolcas: From Source Code to Insight
2019
In this article we describe the OpenMolcas environment and invite the computational chemistry community to collaborate. The open-source project already includes a large number of new developments realized during the transition from the commercial MOLCAS product to the open-source platform. The paper initially describes the technical details of the new software development platform. This is followed by brief presentations of many new methods, implementations, and features of the OpenMolcas program suite. These developments include novel wave function methods such as stochastic complete active space self-consistent field, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods, and hybrid multico…
Modeling a non-stationary bots’ arrival process at an e-commerce Web site
2017
Abstract The paper concerns the issue of modeling and generating a representative Web workload for Web server performance evaluation through simulation experiments. Web traffic analysis has been done from two decades, usually based on Web server log data. However, while the character of the overall Web traffic has been extensively studied and modeled, relatively few studies have been devoted to the analysis of Web traffic generated by Internet robots (Web bots). Moreover, the overwhelming majority of studies concern the traffic on non e-commerce websites. In this paper we address the problem of modeling a realistic arrival process of bots’ requests on an e-commerce Web server. Based on real…
Practical Aspects of Log File Analysis for E-Commerce
2013
The paper concerns Web server log file analysis to discover knowledge useful for online retailers. Data for one month of the online bookstore operation was analyzed with respect to the probability of making a purchase by e-customers. Key states and characteristics of user sessions were distinguished and their relations to the session state connected with purchase confirmation were analyzed. Results allow identification of factors increasing the probability of making a purchase in a given Web store and thus, determination of user sessions which are more valuable in terms of e-business profitability. Such results may be then applied in practice, e.g. in a method for personalized or prioritize…
Logos indicating environmental sustainability in wine production: An exploratory study on how do Burgundy wine consumers perceive them
2014
Corrigendum to “Logos indicating environmental sustainability in wine production: An exploratory study on how do Burgundy wine consumers perceive them”Food Research International, Volume 66, December 2014, Page 515; Logos on environmental sustainability could consist of an effective strategy to provide consumers with accurate, understandable and trustworthy information to encourage them to buy environmentally sustainable wines. However, the large number of different logos indicating environmental sustainability available in the market raises the question of whether their associated messages are successfully conveyed to consumers. In this context, the aim of the present exploratory study was…
Phase separation of an asymmetric binary fluid mixture confined in a nanoscopic slit pore: Molecular-dynamics simulations
2008
As a generic model system of an asymmetric binary fluid mixture, hexadecane dissolved in carbon dioxide is considered, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model for the short polymer, and a simple spherical particle with Lennard-Jones interactions for the carbon dioxide molecules. In previous work, it has been shown that this model reproduces the real phase diagram reasonable well, and also the initial stages of spinodal decomposition in the bulk following a sudden expansion of the system could be studied. Using the parallelized simulation package ESPResSo on a multiprocessor supercomputer, phase separation of thin fluid films confined between parallel walls that are repulsive for both types…

Crystallization of hard spheres revisited. II. Thermodynamic modeling, nucleation work, and the surface of tension
2018
Combining three numerical methods (forward flux sampling, seeding of droplets, and finite-size droplets), we probe the crystallization of hard spheres over the full range from close to coexistence to the spinodal regime. We show that all three methods allow us to sample different regimes and agree perfectly in the ranges where they overlap. By combining the nucleation work calculated from forward flux sampling of small droplets and the nucleation theorem, we show how to compute the nucleation work spanning three orders of magnitude. Using a variation of the nucleation theorem, we show how to extract the pressure difference between the solid droplet and ambient liquid. Moreover, combining th…
Structure and Dynamics of the Quasi-Liquid Layer at the Surface of Ice from Molecular Simulations
2018
We characterized the structural and dynamical properties of the quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at the surface of ice by molecular dynamics simulations with a thermodynamically consistent water model. Our simulations show that for three low-index ice surfaces only the outermost molecular layer presents short-range and mid-range disorder and is diffusive. The onset temperature for normal diffusion is much higher than the glass temperature of supercooled water, although the diffusivity of the QLL is higher than that of bulk water at the corresponding temperature. The underlying subsurface layers impose an ordered template, which produces a regular patterning of the ice/water interface at any tempera…
