EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON TENSILE STRENGTH OF JACQUARD KNITTED FABRICS

2015

An objective approach to select the best fabric for technical and home textiles consists in mechanical properties evaluation. The goal of this study is to analyze the behavior of knitted fabrics undergoing stretch stress. In this respect, three types of 2 colors Rib structure (backstripes jacquard, twillback jacquard and double-layered 3x3 rib fabric) have been presented and tested for tensile strength and elongation on three directions. First, the elasticity and the behavior of knitted Rib fabrics were described The fabrics were knitted using 100% PAN yarns with Nm 1/15x2 on a E5 CMS 330 Stoll V-bed knitting machine, and have been tested using INSTROM 5587 Tensile Testing Machine in respec…

Microscopic origins of the anomalous melting behaviour of high-pressure sodium

2011

Recent experiments have shown that sodium, a prototype simple metal at ambient conditions, exhibits unexpected complexity under high pressure. One of the most puzzling phenomena in the behaviour of dense sodium is the pressure-induced drop in its melting temperature, which extends from 1000 K at ~30GPa to as low as room temperature at ~120GPa. Despite significant theoretical effort to understand the anomalous melting its origins have remained unclear. In this work, we reconstruct the sodium phase diagram using an ab-initio-quality neural-network potential. We demonstrate that the reentrant behaviour results from the screening of interionic interactions by conduction electrons, which at high…

Enhanced structural correlations accelerate diffusion in charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions

1999

Theoretical calculations for colloidal charge-stabilized and hard sphere suspensions show that hydrodynamic interactions yield a qualitatively different particle concentration dependence of the short-time self-diffusion coefficient. The effect, however, is numerically small and hardly accessible by conventional light scattering experiments. Applying multiple-scattering decorrelation equipment and a careful data analysis we show that the theoretical prediction for charged particles is in agreement with our experimental results from aqueous polystyrene latex suspensions.

Quantum-well states in ultrathin Ag(111) films deposited onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) surfaces

2002

Ag(111) films were deposited at room temperature onto H-passivated Si(111)-(1x1) substrates, and subsequently annealed at 300 C. An abrupt non-reactive Ag/Si interface is formed, and very uniform non-strained Ag(111) films of 6-12 monolayers have been grown. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been used to study the valence band electronic properties of these films. Well-defined Ag sp quantum-well states (QWS) have been observed at discrete energies between 0.5-2eV below the Fermi level, and their dispersions have been measured along the GammaK, GammaMM'and GammaL symmetry directions. QWS show a parabolic bidimensional dispersion, with in-plane effective mass of 0.38-0.50mo, along…

Unraveling modular microswimmers: From self-assembly to ion-exchange-driven motors

2018

Active systems contain self-propelled particles and can spontaneously self-organize into patterns making them attractive candidates for the self-assembly of smart soft materials. One key limitation of our present understanding of these materials hinges on the complexity of the microscopic mechanisms driving its components forward. Here, by combining experiments, analytical theory, and simulations we explore such a mechanism for a class of active system, modular microswimmers, which self-assemble from colloids and ion-exchange resins on charged substrates. Our results unveil the self-assembly processes and the working mechanism of the ion-exchange driven motors underlying modular microswimme…

Interphase Model and Phase-Field Approach for Strain Localization

2020

Quasi-brittle materials subjected to a high level of mechanical solicitations see the development in relatively narrow zone of micro-cracks that coalesce into stress free cracks. In this work, the problem of strain localization in elastoplastic materials exhibiting softening has been approached by applying the interphase model together with the phase-field theory. In particular, the narrow zone where strains concentrate, usually named process zone or localization band, is kinematically modeled using the interphase model, while the phase-field variable is introduced to regularize the contact strains at the interface between the plastic strain band and the surrounding material. This correspon…

Entanglement interferometry for precision measurement of atomic scattering properties.

2003

We report on a two-particle matter wave interferometer realized with pairs of trapped 87Rb atoms. Each pair of atoms is confined at a single site of an optical lattice potential. The interferometer is realized by first creating a coherent spin-mixture of the two atoms and then tuning the inter-state scattering length via a Feshbach resonance. The selective change of the inter-state scattering length leads to an entanglement dynamics of the two-particle state that can be detected in a Ramsey interference experiment. This entanglement dynamics is employed for a precision measurement of atomic interaction parameters. Furthermore, the interferometer allows to separate lattice sites with one or …

Faraday patterns in low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

2004

We show that Faraday patterns can be excited in the weak confinement space of low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the trap width, or equivalently of the trap frequency Omega_tight, in the tight confinement space. For slow modulation, as compared with Omega_tight, the low-dimensional dynamics of the condensate in the weak confinement space is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time modulated nonlinearity coefficient. For increasing modulation frequencies a noticeable reduction of the pattern formation threshold is observed close to 2*Omega_tight, which is related to the parametric excitation of the internal breathing mode in the tight confinement sp…

Crossover scaling in two dimensions

1997

We determine the scaling functions describing the crossover from Ising-like critical behavior to classical critical behavior in two-dimensional systems with a variable interaction range. Since this crossover spans several decades in the reduced temperature as well as in the finite-size crossover variable, it has up to now largely evaded a satisfactory numerical determination. Using a new Monte Carlo method, we could obtain accurate results for sufficiently large interactions ranges. Our data cover the full crossover region both above and below the critical temperature and support the hypothesis that the crossover functions are universal. Also the so-called effective exponents are discussed …

Onset of flow in a confined colloidal glass under an imposed shear stress.

2013

A confined colloidal glass, under the imposition of a uniform shear stress, is investigated using numerical simulations. Both at macro- and microscales, the consequent dynamics during the onset of flow is studied. When the imposed stress is gradually decreased, the time scale for the onset of steady flow diverges, associated with long-lived spatial heterogeneities. Near this yield-stress regime, persistent creep in the form of shear-banded structures is observed.
