Entropic Unmixing in Nematic Blends of Semiflexible Polymers

2020

Binary mixtures of semiflexible polymers with the same chain length but different persistence lengths separate into two coexisting different nematic phases when the osmotic pressure of the lyotropic solution is varied. Molecular Dynamics simulations and Density Functional Theory predict phase diagrams either with a triple point, where the isotropic phase coexists with two nematic phases, or a critical point of unmixing within the nematic mixture. The difference in locally preferred bond angles between the constituents drives this unmixing without any attractive interactions between monomers.

Phase Transitions and Relaxation Processes in Macromolecular Systems: The Case of Bottle-brush Polymers

2009

As an example for the interplay of structure, dynamics, and phase behavior of macromolecular systems, this article focuses on the problem of bottle-brush polymers with either rigid or flexible backbones. On a polymer with chain length $N_b$, side-chains with chain length $N$ are endgrafted with grafting density $\sigma$. Due to the multitude of characteristic length scales and the size of these polymers (typically these cylindrical macromolecules contain of the order of 10000 effective monomeric units) understanding of the structure is a challenge for experiment. But due to excessively large relaxation times (particularly under poor solvent conditions) such macromolecules also are a challen…

Dynamic tuning of the director field in liquid crystal shells using block copolymers

2020

When a nematic liquid crystal (LC) is confined on a self-closing spherical shell, topological constraints arise with intriguing consequences that depend critically on how the LC is aligned in the shell. We demonstrate reversible dynamic tuning of the alignment, and thereby the topology, of nematic LC shells stabilized by the nonionic amphiphilic block copolymer Pluronic F127. Deep in the nematic phase, the director is tangential to the interface, but upon approaching the temperature TNI of the nematic-isotropic transition, the director realigns to normal. We link this to a delicate interplay between an interfacial tension that is nearly independent of director orientation, and the configura…

Theoretical modelling of Langmuir monolayers

1998

We study coarse grained, continuum models for Langmuir monolayers by self consistent field theory and by Monte Carlo simulations. Amphiphilic molecules are represented by stiff chains of monomers with one end grafted to a planar surface. In particular, we discuss the origin of successive fluid-fluid transitions, the possible origin of tilt order and the factors which determine the direction of tilt.

Critical phenomena in colloid-polymer mixtures: interfacial tension, order parameter, susceptibility, and coexistence diameter.

2004

The critical behavior of a model colloid-polymer mixture, the so-called AO model, is studied using computer simulations and finite size scaling techniques. Investigated are the interfacial tension, the order parameter, the susceptibility and the coexistence diameter. Our results clearly show that the interfacial tension vanishes at the critical point with exponent 2\nu ~ 1.26. This is in good agreement with the 3D Ising exponent. Also calculated are critical amplitude ratios, which are shown to be compatible with the corresponding 3D Ising values. We additionally identify a number of subtleties that are encountered when finite size scaling is applied to the AO model. In particular, we find …

Glass transition of hard spheres in high dimensions

2009

We have investigated analytically and numerically the liquid-glass transition of hard spheres for dimensions $d\to \infty $ in the framework of mode-coupling theory. The numerical results for the critical collective and self nonergodicity parameters $f_{c}(k;d) $ and $f_{c}^{(s)}(k;d) $ exhibit non-Gaussian $k$ -dependence even up to $d=800$. $f_{c}^{(s)}(k;d) $ and $f_{c}(k;d) $ differ for $k\sim d^{1/2}$, but become identical on a scale $k\sim d$, which is proven analytically. The critical packing fraction $\phi_{c}(d) \sim d^{2}2^{-d}$ is above the corresponding Kauzmann packing fraction $\phi_{K}(d)$ derived by a small cage expansion. Its quadratic pre-exponential factor is different fr…

Chebyshev’s Method on Projective Fluids

2020

We demonstrate the acceleration potential of the Chebyshev semi-iterative approach for fluid simulations in Projective Dynamics. The Chebyshev approach has been successfully tested for deformable bodies, where the dynamical system behaves relatively linearly, even though Projective Dynamics, in general, is fundamentally nonlinear. The results for more complex constraints, like fluids, with a particular nonlinear dynamical system, remained unknown so far. We follow a method describing particle-based fluids in Projective Dynamics while replacing the Conjugate Gradient solver with Chebyshev’s method. Our results show that Chebyshev’s method can be successfully applied to fluids and potentially…

Social Media News: Motivation, Purpose and Usage

2013

This paper presents the results of an online survey which was conducted to analyse the use of social web in the context of daily news. Users' motivation and habit in the news consumption were focused. Moreover, users' news behaviour was distinguished in three purposes such news consumption, news production and news dissemination to find out if the usage has a passive or active character. In a second step it was questioned which social software is used for which purpose. In conclusion users appreciate social software for features such as interactivity and information that traditional media does not provide. Among the social web platforms users prefer social networking sites as well as videos…

Tool Support for Model Driven Development of Pervasive Systems

2007

This work presents the PervML Generative Tool (PervGT) that supports a model driven method for the development of pervasive services in ubiquitous environments. The tool, which is based on the Eclipse platform, provides facilities for the graphical description of pervasive systems using PervML, a UML-like modeling language. Once the pervasive system is specified, the PervML model is used as input to a transformation engine that generates source code and other implementation assets. This generated code extends an OSGi-based framework in order to build the final pervasive applications
