2008

The case summaries sent to the central council of the Inquisition in Madrid by the tribunal in Barcelona show that a number of Protestant soldiers were in Spanish service in the second half of the seventeenth century. These soldiers were not persecuted by the Holy Office, but denounced themselves voluntarily in order to be allowed to convert to Catholicism. The majority of them were from German-speaking areas, and many came from within the Holy Roman Empire. The letters exchanged between Madrid and Barcelona show that this reflected a deliberate policy by the Inquisition of not trying soldiers in Spanish service, nor prisoners of war or deserters from the French army during this period.

EN TORNO A LA CULTURA POLÍTICA DE LA ALTA MAGISTRATURA

2008

International audience; One of the most striking facts in the political history of the monarchy in early modern Spain is the growth of a significant state bureaucracy. At the same time, there occurred an intensive reflection on justice, law and government which led to the publication of numerous political and legal treatises. If we know, at least theoretically, how the main institutions of the government worked, we are still ignorant about much concerning the social and cultural profile of the royal officials of the monarchy. Firstly, the goal of this contribution is to offer an analysis on a particular kind of bureaucrats, namely the lawyers, by placing them in their political and institut…

The granting of the Duchy of Sueca to Manuel Godoy and the acquisition by auction of the territory and the belongings of this town, led to significant changes in the jurisdiction a…

Plan S: challenges and opportunities in Spain

2019

Spain is one of the most active European countries in the open access (OA) movement. Although the gold route has scarcely been used, the green route has been intensively implemented through fulfilment of European and national mandates and the development of institutional policies. Plan S is becoming a disruptive element in the context of scientific communication, and Spain’s possible adherence to Plan S could imply technical challenges in journals and repositories, additional costs that are difficult to estimate, or refusal to accept the Plan on the part of researchers (based on the loss of freedom to choose the journal in which to publish). However, the implementation of Plan S in Spain wo…

Italia, Francia, Spagna e Stati Uniti a confronto

2014

According to the comparative method, the thesis analyses the recent changes to the di…

May Measurement Month 2018: an analysis of blood pressure screening results from Spain.

2020

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://academic.oup.com/eurheartjsupp/article/22/Supplement_H/H119/5898732 En este artículo también participan: Fernando Martínez, Blanca Carreras, Bettina de Berardinis, Thomas Beaney, Anca Chis Ster, Neil R. Poulter, Xin Xia y Luis M. Ruilope. Elevated blood pressure (BP) is the single most important contributing risk factor to the global disease burden, leading to over 10 million deaths each year. In Spain, hypertension (HTN) affects around 20% of the adult population and remains the greatest attributable cause of cardiovascular mortality. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a worldwide initiative aimed at increasing awareness of HTN…

Clinical relevance of postzygotic mosaicism in Cornelia de Lange syndrome and purifying selection of NIPBL variants in blood.

2021

Postzygotic mosaicism (PZM) in NIPBL is a strong source of causality for Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) that can have major clinical implications. Here, we further delineate the role of somatic mosaicism in CdLS by describing a series of 11 unreported patients with mosaic disease-causing variants in NIPBL and performing a retrospective cohort study from a Spanish CdLS diagnostic center. By reviewing the literature and combining our findings with previously published data, we demonstrate a negative selection against somatic deleterious NIPBL variants in blood. Furthermore, the analysis of all reported cases indicates an unusual high prevalence of mosaicism in CdLS, occurring in 13.1% of p…

La Cuevona de Avín (Avín, Asturias, North Spain): A new Late Pleistocene site in the lower valley of the River Güeña

2022

The archaeological investigations carried out in the last twenty years in the Lower Valley of the River Güeña (Asturias, central part of northern Spain) have documented different prehistoric sites, particularly with Middle and Upper Palaeolithic occupations. This paper presents the results of the archaeological excavation carried out in the cave of La Cuevona de Avín. From the systematic study of the biotic and abiotic remains, a total of three occupation phases (Phases 1 to 3) have been determined, dated in the Late Pleistocene. The lithic studies indicate the use of local raw materials (mainly quartzite), but also regional ones (different types of flint) in the whole sequence. Retouched i…

Indigenismo y migracionismo.

1996

This paper discusses various aspects on the origins of the Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. The dual model is proposed as an alternative to the dichotomy of demie (migrationist) and non-demic (indigenist) explanations. The application of this model in eastern Spain offers an opportunity to evaluate its potential to account for diversity in processes associated with the origins of food production and their spatial organisation.

Presence of Naraoia Walcott, 1912 in the middle Cambrian of Europe (Murero, NE Spain).

2018

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: http://sepaleontologia.es/revista/anteriores/SJP%20(2018)%20vol.%2033/vol.%201/04.pdf The genus Naraoia Walcott, 1912, a Burgess Shale-type fossil known from the lower and middle Cambrian of British Columbia (Canada), Idaho and Utah (USA), as well as from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces (China), is now reported from the middle Cambrian of Murero (Zaragoza, Spain), which is the first record in the Acadobaltic province. The only fragmented specimen found is determined as Naraoia sp., its age being Pardailhania multispinosa Zone (Drumian Stage). This new datum reinforces the hypothesis of the existence of a …
