To the Editor: Vertebral artery (VA) dissection is a well-known cause of vertebrobasilar ischemia in young people and may be due to preceding chiropractic maneuvers, cystic medial necrosis, mucopolysaccharidosis and reticular fiber diseases, vasculitis,1 2 or a yet-unknown arteriopathy.3 Common findings in VA dissection are unilateral or bilateral neck pain associated with cerebellar and brain stem (usually medullary) infarctions,2 3 which are rarely associated with clinical signs of spinal cord lesions.4 5 6 Recently, 1 patient each was described with bilateral spinal cord infarction7 and Brown-Sequard’s syndrome8 as the sole manifestation of spontaneous unilateral VA dissection. AbstractMeasurement error often leads to biased estimates and incorrect tests in epidemiological studies. These problems can be corrected by design modifications which allow for refined statistical models, or in some situations by adjusted sample sizes to compensate a power reduction. The design options are mainly an additional replication or internal validation study. Sample size calculations for these designs are more complex, since usually there is no unique design solution to obtain a prespecified power. AbstractThe introduction of fuzzy logic improves a system for the automatic quantification of renal artery lesions seen in digital subtraction angiograms. A two-step approach has been followed. An earlier system based on non-fuzzy syntactic analysis provided a clear symbolic description of the stenotic lesions. Although this system worked correctly, it did not take into account the variability and uncertainty inherent to image processing and to knowledge on the reference diameter. This system has been improved by the introduction of fuzzy logic in the representation of the reference diameter. It provides a description of the stenosis in terms of fuzzy quantities. OBJECTIVE To investigate the proportion of individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes who perceive the need for lifestyle counseling, factors associated with this perception, and whether the perceived need is associated with subsequent attendance in lifestyle intervention. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Baseline and intervention data were obtained from 10,149 participants in a Finnish National Diabetes Prevention Project. RESULTS In total, 36% of men and 52% of women perceived the need for counseling. Most of the risk factors did not increase the perceived need for counseling. OBJECTIVE To evaluate safety and efficacy of DiaPep277 in preserving β-cell function in type 1 diabetic patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS DIA-AID 1 is a multinational, phase 3, balanced-randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical study. Newly diagnosed patients (N = 457, aged 16–45 years) were randomized to subcutaneous injections of DiaPep277 or placebo quarterly for 2 years. The primary efficacy end point was the change from baseline in the area under the glucagon-stimulated C-peptide curve. The CSE project has set reference standards of two kinds: In a broad sense, a standard how to perform a comprehensive evaluation study, in a narrow sense, standards as specific references for evaluating computer ECG programs. The evaluation methodology used within the CSE project is described as a basis for presentation of results which are published elsewhere in this issue.

Background and Purpose: Because of several methodological limitations, previous studies focusing on the prevalence of large vessel occlusion in ischemic stroke (IS) patients provided conflicting results. We evaluated the incidence of IS with a visible arterial occlusion using a comprehensive population-based registry.
