Spectral Analysis of LMC-X2 with XMM/Newton

We present the results of the analisys of an archival observation of LMC X-2 performed with XMM/Newton. The spectra of this source has never been analyzed with a high precision instrument before. The spectrum of the source can be fitted with a blackbody with a temperature 1.5 keV plus a disk blackbody at 0.8 keV. We argue that the emission of this source can be straightforwardly interpreted as a sum of the emission from a boundary layer between the NS and the disc and a blackbody component coming from the disc itself. The detection of the O VIII emission line (and the lack of detection of lines in the iron region) can be due to the fact that the source lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
Synthetic and natural chromium bearing spinels: an optical spectroscopy study

Four samples of synthetic chromium-bearing spinels of (Mg, Fe2+)(Cr, Fe3+)2O4 composition and four samples of natural spinels of predominantly (Mg, Fe2+)(Al, Cr)2O4 composition were studied at ambient conditions by means of optical absorption spectroscopy. Synthetic end-member MgCr2O4 spinel was also studied at pressures up to ca. 10 GPa. In both synthetic and natural samples, chromium is present predominantly as octahedral Cr3+ seen in the spectra as two broad intense absorption bands in the visible range caused by the electronic spin-allowed 4A2g → 4T2g and 4A2g → 4T1g transitions (U- and Y-band, respectively). Indoor lighting quality: Effects of different wall colours

This paper reports the results of measurements performed in a test room to investigate the impact of using different wall colours and light scenes on indoor lighting quality. Eye level spectral irradiances were measured for a user located inside the room and seated at a desk. These measurements allow the use of the Irradiance Toolbox, which makes it possible to calculate equivalent illuminances for the photopigments in the human eye. Moreover, the CIECAM02 colour appearance model was used to investigate the variations in hue and chroma values of the different wall colours when changing the light scene. The baroreflex (BR) is an important physiological regulatory mechanism which reacts to blood pressure perturbations with reflex changes of target variables such as the heart period (electrocardiogram derived RR interval) or the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR). Evaluation of cardiac chronotropic (RR as a target variable) and vascular resistance (target PVR) BR arms was in previous studies mainly based on the use of the spontaneous variability of the systolic or diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), respectively, as the input signals. Quantifying High-Order Interactions in Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Networks

We present a method to analyze the dynamics of physiological networks beyond the framework of pairwise interactions. Our method defines the so-called O-information rate (OIR) as a measure of the higher-order interaction among several physiological variables. The OIR measure is computed from the vector autoregressive representation of multiple time series, and is applied to the network formed by heart period, systolic and diastolic arterial pressure, respiration and cerebral blood flow variability series measured in healthy subjects at rest and after head-up tilt. Accretion shock on CTTSs and its X-ray emission

High spectral resolution X-ray observations of classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) demonstrate the presence of plasma at T~2-3×10^6 K and ne~10^11-10^13 cm-3. Stationary models suggest that this emission is due to shock-heated accreting material. We address this issue by a 1-D hydrodynamic model of the impact of the accretion flow onto a chromosphere of a CTTS with the aim of investigating the stability of accretion shock and the role of the chromosphere. Our simulations include the effects of gravity, radiative losses from optically thin plasma, the thermal conduction and a detailed modeling of the stellar chromosphere. Probing the radio emission from air showers with polarization measurements

The emission of radio waves from air showers has been attributed to the so-called geomagnetic emission process. At frequencies around 50 MHz this process leads to coherent radiation which can be observed with rather simple setups. The direction of the electric field induced by this emission process depends only on the local magnetic field vector and on the incoming direction of the air shower. We report on measurements of the electric field vector where, in addition to this geomagnetic component, another component has been observed which cannot be described by the geomagnetic emission process.
