Clinical and radiological features of Forestier's disease presenting with dysphagia

2018

Background Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), also known as Forestier's disease, is a rheumatologic condition characterized by ossification of the spinal ligaments and tendons. Large anterior osteophytes are typically present in the lower cervical levels, while upper cervical ossification resulting in dysphagia is very rare. Methods Here, we presented a patient with Forestier's disease involving massive ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament extending from C3 to C4 downward contributing to severe dysphagia. Results A 65-year-old male presented with cervical pain and dysphagia. The computed tomography of the cervical spine demonstrated massive anterior longitudinal …

Effectiveness of Entrepreneurial Universities: Experiences and Challenges in Digital Era (A Systemic Approach)

2021

The modern world actively discusses the challenges that will lead to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As the specialists assume, part of the jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence. In addition, creation of completely new jobs is expected. As for the jobs that might be maintained in future, skills upgrading will be particularly important. In such a turbulent environment of economic development, universities, and in particular entrepreneurial universities, play a significant role. We think so as these universities have special structures that promote form a university-industry-government triple helix, reskilling and commercialization of new ideas, etc. Due to the above-mentioned fa…

Analysis of the spatial distribution of free radicals in ammonium tartrate by pulse EPR techniques

2009

Using pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) on a series of l(+)-ammonium tartrate (AT) dosimeters exposed to radiations with different linear energy transfer (LET), we assessed the ability of pulse EPR spectroscopy to discriminate the quality of various radiation beams such as (60)Co gamma-ray photons, protons and thermal neutrons at various doses by analyzing the local radical distributions produced by the different beams. We performed two types of pulse EPR investigations: two-pulse electron spin echo decay obtained by varying the microwave power, and a double electron-electron resonance (DEER) study. Both methods provide information about the dipolar interactions among the free rad…

Squaramide-based reagent for selective chromogenic sensing of Cu(II) through a zwitterion radical.

2010

A minimalist squaramide-based chemodosimeter for Cu(2+) is described. Upon selective chelation to 2, Cu(2+) induces the formation of a highly colored zwitterionic radical, which is kinetically stable for hours. The presence of a radical is confirmed by EPR and ESI-MS. It is then possible to use reagent 2 for visual and selective sensing of Cu(2+) at neutral pH.

Synthèse et caractérisation de phosphine, borane, amine sur plateforme ferrocène polyfonctionnelle

2016

Ferrocene platforms are useful in coordination chemistry and catalysis thanks to their robustness and versatile functionalization. Ferrocene backbone allows the implantation of several key functional groups in a restricted space, inducing close proximity and potential polyfunctional cooperation (see for instance ferrocenyl polyphosphine chemistry). Ansa ferrocene and ferrocene bearing conformational control inducing groups maximizing the proximity of key groups have been widely reported. The first part of this thesis focuses on the synthesis of new borylated cyclopentadienyl, and their use in formation of borylated metallocenes bearing conformational constraints. NMR analysis and DFT calcula…

Quantum gap and spin-wave excitations in the Kitaev model on a triangular lattice

2017

We study the effects of quantum fluctuations on the dynamical generation of a gap and on the evolution of the spin-wave spectra of a frustrated magnet on a triangular lattice with bond-dependent Ising couplings, analog of the Kitaev honeycomb model. The quantum fluctuations lift the subextensive degeneracy of the classical ground-state manifold by a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism. Nearest-neighbor chains remain decoupled and the surviving discrete degeneracy of the ground state is protected by a hidden model symmetry. We show how the four-spin interaction, emergent from the fluctuations, generates a spin gap shifting the nodal lines of the linear spin-wave spectrum to finite energies.

Homozygous SMN1 exons 1-6 deletion: pitfalls in genetic counseling and general recommendations for spinal muscular atrophy molecular diagnosis.

2012

We report on a rare homozygous intragenic deletion encompassing exons 1-6 of the SMN1 gene in a patient with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) born into a consanguineous family. This exceptional configuration induced misinterpretation of the molecular defect involved in this patient, who was first reported as having a classic SMN1 exon 7 deletion. This case points out the possible pitfalls in molecular diagnosis of SMA in affected patients and their relatives: exploration of the SMN1 exon 7 (c.840C/T alleles) may be disturbed by several non-pathological or pathological variants around the SMN1 exon 7. In order to accurately describe the molecular defect in an SMA-affected patient, we propose to…

Evaluation of antioxidant properties and assessment of genetic diversity of Capparis spinosa cultivated in Pantelleria Island.

2017

Capparis spinosa is a wild and cultivated bush, which grows mainly in the Mediterranean Basin. Unopened flower buds, called capers are used in the Mediterranean cuisine as flavoring for meat, vegetable and other foods. Several studies evaluated bioactive component and antioxidant activity of Capparis spinosa, increasing the market demand and the economic importance of capers. The aim of this work was to evaluate the contents of bioactive compounds in floral buds fermented in salt of C. spinosa collected from different areas of Pantelleria Island (Italy), testing the effect on healthy function as total antioxidant compounds. Hydrophilic extracts of C. spinosa from Pantelleria Island were char…

Centrosome structure is very similar in eupyrene and apyrene spermatocytes ofEphestia kuehniella(Pyralidae, Lepidoptera, Insecta)

1997

Summary The higher Lepidoptera produce two types of sperm, eupyrene and apyrene. Eupyrene spermatozoa are fertile, while apyrene spermatozoa are anucleate and, therefore, sterile. Meiosis differs between the two developmental lines. One of the most obvious differences is the aberrant organization of the apyrene spindles. They possess fewer microtubules than eupyrene spindles and chromosome segregation is irregular. To determine whether micotubule nucleation is impaired in the aprene spindles, the present fine structure study concentrated on the centrosomes in both spermatocyte types. In addition, the presence of gamma-tubulin, a newly discovered tubulin isoform which is prevalent in centros…
