Post-translational modifications in the survival motor neuron protein

2004

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by a progressive loss of the spinal motoneurons. The SMA-determining gene has been termed survival motor neuron (SMN) and is deleted or mutated in over 98% of patients. The encoded gene product is a protein expressed as different isoforms. In particular, we showed that the rat SMN cDNA produces two isoforms with Mr of 32 and 35 kDa, both localized in nuclear coiled bodies, but the 32 kDa form is also cytoplasmic, whereas the 35 kDa form is also microsomal. To determine the molecular relationship between these two isoforms and potential post-translational modifications, we performed transfection experiments with a …

Innovazione e Imprenditorialità. Il ruolo degli spin-off universitari.

2013

Unprecedented multiple electronic spin transition in hepta- and nonanuclear complex compounds observed by Mössbauer spectroscopy

2005

Abstract The precursor [Fe(III)(5L)Cl](5LH2 = N,N′-bis(1-hydroxy-2- benzyliden)-1,7-diamino-4-azaheptane) is a high-spin (S = 5/2) complex. This precursor combined with the bridging units [Fe(II)(CN)6]4−, [Co(III)(CN)6]3−, and [Mo(CN)8]4− yields starshaped hepta- and nonanuclear clusters, [Fe(II){(CN)Fe(III)(5L)}6]Cl2, [Co(III){(CN)Fe(III)(5L)}6]Cl3 and [Mo(IV){(CN)Fe(III)(5L)}8]Cl4. The starshaped compounds are high-spin systems at room temperature. On cooling to 20 K some of the iron(III) centers in the Co(III)- and Mo(IV)-star switch to the low-spin state as proven by Mossbauer spectroscopy, i.e., multiple electronic transitions, while the Fe(II)-star remains in the high-spin state.

Hybridization in Capparis spinosa L.: Molecular and morphological evidence from a Mediterranean island complex

2014

Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) molecular markers and morphological analysis were used in order to characterize wild populations and cultivated forms of orphan crop species Capparis spinosa L. in a Mediterranean island complex. Nineteen wild populations belonging to two different subspecies, C. spinosa subsp. spinosa and subsp. rupestris, were sampled in different environments in Sicily and the surrounding islets Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Salina. Different biotypes cultivated in Pantelleria and Salina were analyzed. Six ISSR primers were selected for genetic characterization, and all clear and reproducible bands were scored and analyzed. Among the 47 ISSR bands obtained, 97.5% were pol…

Determination of metabolite concentrations in human brain tumour biopsy samples using HR-MAS and ERETIC measurements.

2009

Accurate determination of the concentration of the metabolites contained in intact human biopsies of 10 glioblastoma multiforme samples was achieved using one-dimensional 1H high-resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) NMR combined with ERETIC™ (electronic reference to in vivo concentrations) measurements. The amount of sample used ranged from 6.8 to 12.9 mg. Metabolite concentrations were measured in each sample using two methods: with DSS (2,2-dimethyl-2-silapentane-5-sulfonate sodium salt) as an internal reference and with ERETIC™ as an external electronically generated reference. The ERETIC™ signal was shown to be highly reproducible and did not affect the spectral quality. The concent…

Inactivation and tachyphylaxis of heat-evoked inward currents in nociceptive primary sensory neurones of rats.

2000

In contrast to other sensory modalities, pain does not decrease when a noxious stimulus is applied at constant intensity (Greene & Hardy, 1962). From this lack of adaptation on the perceptive level it has traditionally been implied that primary nociceptive afferents also do not adapt upon constant stimulation. This is in contrast to the results of recordings from these afferents, which exhibit pronounced adaptation for physical as well as chemical stimuli (Meyer et al. 1994). Peripheral adaptation of nociceptive nerve endings is compensated by central summation (Mendell & Wall, 1965; Price et al. 1977); this slow summation process of small fibre input to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord i…

Entangled states and coherent interaction in resonant media

2014

The entanglement features of some solid state materials, as well as of particular systems of interacting atoms and fields are analyzed. A detailed investigation of the rich phase structure of low dimensional spin models, describing the natural mineral azurite and copper based coordination compounds, has revealed regimes with the most robust entanglement behavior. Using the dynamical system approach, the phase structure of some classical models on hierarchical (recursive) lattices has been also studied and, for the first time, the transition between chaotic and periodic regimes by means of tangent bifurcation has been detected.A detailed description of entanglement properties of three atoms …

Dinitrosyl-iron triggers apoptosis in Jurkat cells despite overexpression of Bcl-2

2004

Cells expressing the cytokine-inducible NO synthase are known to trigger apoptosis in neighboring cells. Paramagnetic dinitrosyl nonheme iron complexes (DNIC) were found in tumor tissue about 40 years ago; however, the role of these NO(+)-bearing species is not completely understood. In the human Jurkat leukemia cell line, the application of the model complex DNIC-thiosulfate (50-200 microM) induced apoptosis (defined by phosphatidylserine externalization) in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. In Jurkat cells, the pan-caspase inhibitor, zVADfmk (50 microM), and/or stable transfection of antiapoptotic protein, Bcl-2, was unable to afford protection against DNIC-induced apoptosis. Th…

Application of the ESR spectroscopy to estimate the original dose in irradiated chicken bone

2007

Abstract The paper discusses the results of an investigation aimed to use the ESR spectroscopy as a quantitative procedure to estimate the original dose in irradiated chicken. The time stability of the ESR signal was at first carried out, to obtain a correction factor to be applied to the dose estimated with the added dose method. Our results show that this procedure gives an estimation of the original dose within ±25%.

Optimal control and Clairaut-Liouville metrics with applications

2014

The work of this thesis is about the study of the conjugate and cut loci of 2D riemannian or almost-riemannian metrics. We take the point of view of optimal control to apply the Pontryagin Maximum Principle in the purpose of characterize the extremals of the problem considered. We use geometric, numerical and integrability methods to study some Liouville and Clairaut-Liouville metrics on the sphere. In the degenerate case of revolution, the study of the ellipsoid uses geometric methods to fix the cut locus and the nature of the conjugate locus in the oblate and prolate cases. In the general case, extremals will have two distinct type of comportment which correspond to those observed in the r…
