Effect of extrusion and photoxidation on polyethylene/clay nanocomposites
2009
Polyethylene (a 1:1 blend of m-LLDPE and z-LLDPE) double layer silicate clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a twin screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) was used as a compatibiliser to enhance the dispersion of two organically modified monmorilonite clays (OMMT): Closite 15A (CL15) and nanofill SE 3000 (NF), and natural montmorillonite (NaMMT). The clay dispersion and morphology obtained in the extruded nanocomposite samples were fully characterised both after processing and during photo-oxidation by a number of complementary analytical techniques. The effects of the compatibiliser, the organoclay modifier (quartenary alkyl ammonium surfactant) …
Rigid biobased polycarbonates with good processability based on a spirocyclic diol derived from citric acid
2020
Introducing biobased polymers from renewable sources for use as high-performance thermoplastics with high demands on mechanical rigidity, transparency, thermal stability, as well as good processability, is a significant challenge. In the present work we have designed and prepared a rigid biobased bis-spirocylic diol by di-cycloketalization of a bicyclic diketone (cis-bicyclo[3.3.0]octane-3,7-dione, obtained from citric acid) using trimethylolpropane. This spiro-diol monomer has two reactive primary hydroxyl groups and the synthesis from inexpensive biobased starting materials is straightforward and readily upscalable, involving no chromatographic purification. In order to explore the useful…
Synthesis of Precision Poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s via Acyclic Diene Metathesis Polycondensation
2019
[Image: see text] Fully saturated, aliphatic polymers containing adamantane moieties evenly distributed along the polymer backbone are of great interest due to their exceptional thermal stability, yet more synthetic strategies toward these polymers would be desirable. Herein, we report for the first time the synthesis of poly(1,3-adamantylene alkylene)s based on α,ω-dienes containing bulky 1,3-adamantylene defects precisely located on every 11th, 17th, 19th, and 21st chain carbon via acyclic diene metathesis polycondensation. All saturated polymers revealed excellent thermal stabilities (452–456 °C) that were significantly higher compared to those of structurally similar polyolefins with al…

Two-Component Hydrogels Formed by Cyclodextrins and Dicationic Imidazolium Salts
2013
In the framework of our recent interest in studying the gelling behaviour of imidazolium salts, we took into account the possibility of obtaining two-component hydrogels by combining cyclodextrins and dicationic imidazolium salts. In particular, we used diimidazolium salts differing in the alkyl chain length and in the size, shape, and coordination ability of the anion, namely the 3,3′-di-n-decyl- and 3,3′-di-n-dodecyl-1,1′-(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium dibromide, and 3,3′-di-n-dodecyl-1,1′-(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium ditetrafluoroborate and dihexafluorophosphate. As far as cyclodextrins are concerned, to gain information on the effects of different sized cyclic oligos…
Binding properties of mono-(6-deoxy-6-amino)-β-cyclodextrin towards p-nitroaniline derivatives: a polarimetric study
2009
Abstract Polarimetry was used in order to investigate the formation of supramolecular complexes between mono-6-amino-β-cyclodextrin and various p-nitroaniline derivatives at two different pH values. Comparison with the behaviour of native β-cyclodextrin gave us the opportunity to consider the effect exerted by the presence of charged groups, having different solvation requirements, on the binding equilibrium. Data offer some support to the hypothesis of ‘dynamic co-inclusion’ of solvent molecules within the host–guest complex.
Computational Study of Nanosized Drug Delivery from Cyclodextrins, Crown Ethers and Hyaluronan in Pharmaceutical Formulations
2015
Abstract The problem in this work is the computational characterization of cyclodextrins, crown ethers and hyaluronan (HA) as hosts of inclusion complexes for nanosized drug delivery vehicles in pharmaceutical formulations. The difficulty is addressed through a computational study of some thermodynamic, geometric and topological properties of the hosts. The calculated properties of oligosaccharides of D-glucopyranoses allow these to act as co-solvents of polyanions in water. In crown ethers, the central channel is computed. Mucoadhesive polymer HA in formulations releases drugs in mucosas. Geometric, topological and fractal analyses are carried out with code TOPO. Reference calculations are…
Thermal, glass-forming, nonlinear optical and holographic properties of "push-pull" type azochromophores with triphenyl moieties containing isophoren…
2013
Molecular organic compounds with electron donating fragment bounded through π-conjugated system with electron acceptor fragment, as well as with incorporated triphenyl groups in their molecules show potential for creating cheap and simple solution processable materials with nonlinear optical properties. Additional insertion of azobenzene fragment in their structures makes them also possible to form holographic volume and surface relief gratings (SRG) after exposure to laser radiation, which could be useful for holographic data storage. For these purposes polymers are generally used. However, their application is complicated and challenging task as in every attempt to obtain the same polymer…
On the relations between aromaticity and substituent effect
2019
Aromaticity/aromatic and substituent/substituent effects belong to the most commonly used terms in organic chemistry and related fields. The quantitative description of aromaticity is based on energetic, geometric (e.g., HOMA), magnetic (e.g., NICS) and reactivity criteria, as well as the properties of the electronic structure (e.g., FLU). The substituent effect can be described using either traditional Hammett-type substituent constants or characteristics based on quantum-chemistry. For this purpose, the energies of properly designed homodesmotic reactions and electron density distribution are used. In the first case, a descriptor named SESE (energy stabilizing the substituent effect) is o…
Degradation Behavior of Nanocomposite Polymer Blends
2014
The usefulness of any material, including nanocomposite polymer blends, depends on its degradability and durability. Thus, this chapter reviews the status of the research on degradation of nanocomposite polymer blends and, in particular, on clay-nanocomposite polymer blends, paying particular attention to both the role of the filler and the role of the blend morphology and composition. The results of recent research indicate that the clay has two opposing effects on the thermal stability of a nanocomposite polymer blend: (1) a promoter effect of the polymer matrix degradation, which decreases the thermal stability, and (2) a barrier effect, which improves the thermal stability. Moreover, th…
