Indirect chronology method employing rare earth elements to identify Sagunto Castle mortar construction periods
2017
A novel indirect chronology method has been developed to identify Sagunto Castle construction periods. The method is based on the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine rare earth elements (REE) and other trace elements in mortars. Additionally, a no destructive geochemical analysis based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was employed for major elements determination. Collected chemical data were processed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to highlight any differences among the mortars belonging to different buildings and construction periods. The results show that PCA analysis permits to discriminate construction periods according to mortar sample REE …
Investigating Relationships Between Music, Emotions, Personality, and Music-Induced Movement
2013
Listening to music makes us to move in various ways. The characteristics of these movements can be affected by several aspects, such as individual factors, musical features, or the emotional content of the music. In a study in which we presented 60 individuals with 30 musical stimuli representing different genres of popular music and recorded their movement with an optical motion capture system, we found significant correlations 1) between musical characteristics and the exhibited movement, 2) between the perceived emotional content of the music and the movement, and 3) between personality traits of the dancers and the movement. However, such separate analyses are incapable of investigating…
A ten-year follow-up of the Reflection cementless acetabular component.
2008
We reviewed the long-term results at ten to 12 years of 118 total hip replacements in 109 patients using a second-generation hemispherical cementless acetabular component (Reflection) designed to address the problem of backside wear. Five patients (five hips) died and six patients (seven hips) were lost to follow-up. The remaining 98 patients (106 hips) had a mean age of 62.9 years (34.0 to 86.2) A rate of revision for aseptic loosening of 0.9%, and predictable results were found with respect to radiological evidence of fixation, lack of pain, walking ability, range of movement and function. One component was revised for aseptic loosening, and of the 101 hips (95.2%) that did not have a rev…

Quantum Non-Markovian Piecewise Dynamics from Collision Models
2017
Recently, a large class of quantum non-Markovian piecewise dynamics for an open quantum system obeying closed evolution equations has been introduced [B. Vacchini, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 230401 (2016)]. These dynamics have been defined in terms of a waiting-time distribution between quantum jumps, along with quantum maps describing the effect of jumps and the system's evolution between them. Here, we present a quantum collision model with memory, whose reduced dynamics in the continuous-time limit reproduces the above class of non-Markovian piecewise dynamics, thus providing an explicit microscopic realization.
CALIBRATION OF LÉVY PROCESSES USING OPTIMAL CONTROL OF KOLMOGOROV EQUATIONS WITH PERIODIC BOUNDARY CONDITIONS
2018
We present an optimal control approach to the problem of model calibration for L\'evy processes based on a non parametric estimation procedure. The calibration problem is of considerable interest in mathematical finance and beyond. Calibration of L\'evy processes is particularly challenging as the jump distribution is given by an arbitrary L\'evy measure, which form a infinite dimensional space. In this work, we follow an approach which is related to the maximum likelihood theory of sieves. The sampling of the L\'evy process is modelled as independent observations of the stochastic process at some terminal time $T$. We use a generic spline discretization of the L\'evy jump measure and selec…
Solutions with sign information for nonlinear Robin problems with no growth restriction on reaction
2019
We consider a parametric nonlinear Robin problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator. The reaction is a Carathéodory function which is only locally defined (that is, the hypotheses concern only its behaviour near zero). The conditions on the reaction are minimal. Using variational tools together with truncation, perturbation and comparison techniques and critical groups, we show that for all small values of the parameter λ > 0, the problem has at least three nontrivial smooth solutions, two of constant sign and the third nodal.

Apsekojumu anketu tulkošanas specifika
2015
Maģistra darba “Apsekojumu anketu tulkošanas specifika“mērķis ir analizēt stratēģijas, kas tiek izmantotas Eiropā veikto iedzīvotāju apsekojumu anketu tulkošanā. Šādi apsekojumi tiek organizēti vienoti Eiropas Savienības līmenī saskaņā ar precīzi formulētiem metodoloģiskiem norādījumiem, lai iegūtu salīdzināmu, uzticamu un oficiālu statistiku. Darbs sastāv no teorētiskās daļas, kurā tiek pētīta pieejamā literatūra un informācijas avoti, un no empīriskās daļas, kurā tiek analizēts Eiropas iedzīvotāju veselības apsekojuma anketas tulkojums latviešu valodā. Pētījuma rezultāti rāda, ka visbiežāk izmantotās apsekojumu anketu tulkošanas stratēģijas ir adaptācija, lokalizācija un burtisks tulkojum…
