The paper presents the study of the plaster formulated to imitate the natural stones and marbles that are popular in Sicily in the early twentieth century and points out that the first applications and the dissemination of new mortars also in the rest of Italy feels the influence of the experiments conducted throughout Europe . The contribution summarizes the results of a rigorous and thorough reconnaissance of patents kept in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome relating to mortars for plastering an artificial stone critically analyzes the content and emphasizes cultural contacts with the experiments on large-scale restoration projects in Italy and France in the late nineteenth century. The analysis of the architectural surfaces is developed with instrumental tests: the levels of adhesion of finishing surface are characterized in particular through a campaign of thermographic investigations and diagnosis is drawn to show that the consolidation of the layers and reintegration are interventions to be introduced within the restoration project and maintenance program.Settore ICAR/19 - Restauro

Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound Guided ERC in a Pregnant Woman With Bile Duct Stones

2014

Background: The change in lithogenicity of bile, increased stasis of bile and decreased gall bladder emptying are the possible reasons for an increased risk of gall stones during pregnancy. However, biliary interventions during pregnancy are associated with risks to both the pregnancy and developing fetus. ERC under fluoroscopic control as gold standard is associated with higher risk of premature labor and teratogenity. Methods and patient: We performed transabdominal ultra-sound guided ERC in one patient in the second trimenon with gall stones. While the hilus area is observed by ultrasound, the papilla is carefully cannulated with a guidewire. A contrast agent is applied in the common bil…

Isolation From Human Calcium Oxalate Renal Stones of Nephrocalcin, a Glycoprotein Inhibitor of Calcium Oxalate Crystal Growth. Evidence That Nephroca…

1987

We have determined that the organic matrix of calcium oxalate kidney stones contains a glycoprotein inhibitor ofcalcium oxalate crystal growth (nephrocalcin) that resembles nephrocalcin present in the urine of patients with calcium oxalate stones and differs from nephrocalcin from the urine of normal people. Pulverized calcium oxalate renal stones were extracted with 0.05M EDTA, pH 8.0; nephrocalcin eluted in five peaks using DEAE-cellulose column chromatography, and each peak was further resolved by Sephacryl S-200 column chromatography. Four ofthe fiveDEAE peaks corresponded to those usually found in nephrocalcin from urine; the fifth eluted at a lower ionic strength than any found in uri…

Effectiveness of Preservative Treatments on Coloured Ruditic Building Stones

2009

:  The dark grey Breccia di Billiemi and the Ammonitico Rosso of Piana degli Albanesi, two coloured stones widely used in monuments both outdoor and indoor in Sicily, undergo significant decay as effect of weathering: colour change and development of surface microcracks which affect not only the chromatic aspect but also the state of aggregation. In a previous study (Fracture and Failure of Natural Building Stones, 2006, Springer, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: 329), such effects were successfully reproduced on laboratory samples by means of artificial accelerated weathering and the different response of veins and grains to the ageing agents was related to the microstructure of stones. In this…

2021

The following article is an introduction to the Adalbert Stifter’s short story entitled Granite in Polish translation. The article explains the political and cultural origin of the work, its poetical form, its ethical and philosophical meaning. The Granite, included in the short story collection (Colorful Stones, 1853) is considered to be an important declaration of Biedermeier movement in Austria, its aesthetic as well as its ethic tradition, manifest of which was so-called „Gentle Law” (das sanfte Gesetz), i.e. an ordered existence harmony and an unspectacular, daily practising the humanism in the personal, country and social life. In Stifter’s piece it concerns also an extraordinary case…

The discovery of a Mycenaean-type tholos tomb in the Bronze Age necropolis of the Gazzi buried floodplain (Messina, Southern Italy): new geological a…

2019

This paper deals with a monument that is, up to this date, unique in Sicily and in the Italian peninsula: the Mycenaean-type tholos tomb of the Gazzi necropolis in Messina. A recent excavation in the alluvial deposits revealed extensive traces of a funerary area with a tholos tomb and several enchytrismos tombs with skeletal remains, presumably dated back to the end of the Early or the initial stage of the Middle(?) Bronze Age. The present multi-disciplinary investigation has been developed to analyse new data related to sediments, building stones and skeletal remains of this funerary area. The stratigraphic succession hosting the necropolis was formed by overbank sediments deposited on the…

Administration of Second-Generation Extracorporeal Shock Waves without Waterbath for Fragmentation of Extra- and Intrahepatic Bile Duct Stones

1990

First-generation extracorporeal shock-wave sources disintegrate 97% of kidney stones [1, 2]. Recently, in selected patients gallbladder and common bile duct stones were also treated. The technique available so far, however, requires immersion of the patient’s body in a tank of degassed water. The procedure is therefore inconvenient, time consuming, and relatively expensive. The high pressure of shocks (up to 1000 bar) generated by underwater spark discharge causes pain, and general anesthesia is necessary in most patients [3, 4].

Intraoperative cholangiography during cholecystectomy using a biliary-nose tube: Routinely used in patients with main bile duct stones

2021

Background: Nowadays, the “gold standard” treatment for gallbladder stones is laparoscopic cholecystectomy but the risk of iatrogenic biliary duct injuries is increased compared to “open” surgery. Intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) can be useful to avoid biliary injuries but it can also be a no-safe procedure in center in which it is not routinely performed. Aim and objective: The aim of our study is to trust the efficacy of IOC in a patient with common bile duct (CBD) and gallbladder stones using a biliary-nose tube. Materials and methods: 135 patients with gallbladder and CBD stones were treated with sequential therapy and randomly divided into two groups. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy w…
