Halogen bonding and host–guest chemistry between N-alkylammonium resorcinarene halides, diiodoperfluorobutane and neutral guests
2019
Single crystal X-ray structures of halogen-bonded assemblies formed between host N-hexylammonium resorcinarene bromide (1) or N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene chloride (2), and 1,4-diiodooctafluorobutane and accompanying small solvent guests (methanol, acetonitrile and water) are presented. The guests’ inclusion affects the geometry of the cavity of the receptors 1 and 2, while the divalent halogen bond donor 1,4-diiodooctafluorobutane determines the overall nature of the halogen bond assembly. The crystal lattice of 1 contains two structurally different dimeric assemblies A and B, formally resulting in the mixture of a capsular dimer and a dimeric pseudo-capsule. 1H and 19F NMR analyses …
Examining the critical factors that influence the success of construction and demolition waste reverse logistics operations
2022
The reverse logistics (RL) performance of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) differs significantly between countries. Although some countries are successfully circular, other countries are still far behind; with C&DW being largely directed to landfills or being illegally dumped. There is a lack of guidelines on the requirements for transitioning countries towards C&DW diversion, and little attention has been given to the factors that influence the success of C&DW RL and increased circularity. This study aims to develop a framework that helps in structuring and assessing the success of C&DW RL on a regional level and serves as a guide for transitioning developing co…
The effect of the cation p-surface area on the 3D organization and catalytic ability of imidazolium-based ionic liquids
2011
The dichotomic nature of ionic liquids (ILs, simple solvents or supramolecular fluids) induced us to carry out a structural investigation of some mono-and dicationic ionic liquids using 1D and 2D NMR, resonance light scattering, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Ionic liquids with different cation π-surface areas were used, namely [bmim][NTf2], [Bzmim][NTf 2], [Bzbim][NTf2], [p-Xyl-(bim)2][NTf 2]2, and [m-Xyl-(bim)2][NTf2] 2 [bmim = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, Bzmim = 1-benzyl-3- methylimidazolium, Bzbim = 1-benzyl-3-butylimidazolium, NTf2 = bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide]. In order to verify to what extent the structural investigation, coupled with the determination of solvent parameters, could…

Fondos estructurales y política regional en la Unión Europea
2000
The present work examines the reasons that gave rise to European Regional Policy and describes its principles and basic objectives, as well as the operational transformations it underwent from the 1988 Structural Fund reform till the approval of the Agenda 2000. Its ability to correct regional imbalances is subsequently compared with the limited ability of European Public Finance to carry out some of the functions performed by central governments in States with a federal political structure, which results in disparity between regional income levels and the corresponding tax balances. Finally, the achievements and limitations of European Regional Policy are assessed on a wide basis rather th…

Sharing the salt bowl: counterion identity drives N-alkyl resorcinarene affinity for pyrophosphate in water
2021
N-Alkyl ammonium resorcinarene chloride receptors, NARX4, have been shown to act as high-sensitivity detectors of pyrophosphate (PPi), a biomarker of disease, in aqueous media through the chloride-to-PPi exchange [NAR(Cl)4 to NARPPi]. The nature of the anion of the macrocyclic NARX4 (X = Cl−, Br−, triflate OTf−) receptor greatly influences the PPi-affinity in aqueous media. The binding affinity for [NAR (Cl)4] is 3.61 × 105 M−1, while the NAR (Br)4 and NAR (OTf)4 show stronger binding of 5.30 × 105 M−1, and 6.10 × 105 M−1, respectively. The effects of upper rim ammonium cation, –N+H2R substituents (R = 3-hydroxypropyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, or napththalen-1-ylmethyl), of the macrocyclic resor…
GEOMATIC METHODOLOGIES FOR THE STUDY OF TEATRO MASSIMO IN PALERMO (ITALY)
2017
Abstract. This work illustrates the use of geomatics techniques for the documentation of Teatro Massimo in Palermo (Italy), one of the most important and big in Italy and in Europe. The theatre is characterized by a very complex structure and is realized also using innovative solution, studied at the time of the project specifically for this building; for example, an original system was realized for a natural air-conditioning system of the auditorium. Due to his complexity, the documentation of the Teatro Massimo requires studying specific survey solutions for the different parts of the building. In this paper, some studies on two of the most representative parts of the building were descri…
Sustainability in the restoration and management of the historic architecture in Palermo
2015
This research investigates the energy and environmental sustainability in the restoration and conservation of historic buildings. It focuses on the architectural heritage of Palermo, which can be a significant case study for the Mediterranean area. Its objective is to analyse the current energy performance of this historic architecture and its potential for energy improvement. Therefore, it aims at proposing a methodology to combine the enhancement of energy and environmental performances of the historic architecture of Palermo with the need of its material and aesthetic conservation, in the frame of the current regulations.
Rebuilt the space using stone or brick vaulted systems: catching the contemporary challenge of construction tradition
2019
In the recovery and restoration sites, as well as in the versatile word of university research about construction history, its not infrequent to study stereotomy for the re-proposal of stony or tiled vaulted systems, sometimes complex for their constitutive geometry, equipment, preliminary/subsidiary carpentry works. It represents a didactic study-key also in Engineering and Architecture Schools, through laboratories that teach to future designers a know-how that can be easily spent in their professional repercussions.
