Winter and summer analysis of daylight characteristics in offices

Abstract This paper reports a comparison of the results of daylight measurements carried out in summer and winter in three offices, with different exposures and characteristics, located in Naples (Italy). The aim was to extend and enrich the findings of a previous study which reported the results of summer measurements about desk illuminances and circadian impact. The research project includes measurements carried out in other seasons and a comparison between measured and software simulated values with the final goal of developing design guidelines. Methane oxidation in a boreal climate in an experimental landfill cover composed from mechanically–biologically treated waste

The present study evaluated microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in a boreally located outdoor landfill lysimeter (volume 112 m3, height 3.9 m) filled with mechanically-biologically treated waste (MBT residual) and containing a cover layer made from the same MBT residual. The calculations based on gas emission and pore gas measurements showed that, between April and October 2005, a significant proportion (96%) of the methane produced (23 l CH4 m(-2) d(-1)) in the lysimeter was oxidized. Methane was oxidized mainly at the depths of 35-75 cm, as indicated by the upward decrease both in the methane concentration and in the methane-to-carbon dioxide ratio in the pore gas. Treatment of leachate from MSWI bottom ash landfilling with anaerobic sulphate-reducing process

Abstract Removal of sulphate and toxic elements from the leachate of a field landfill lysimeter ( 112 m 3 ) , containing municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash, was studied. The leachate was treated in two parallel laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors without and with ethanol as additional carbon source. With ethanol more than 65% of sulphate was removed, while without ethanol removal was negligible. The treatment removed Ba, Ca, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Tl, Sb, Se, Sr, and Zn of the studied 35 trace and other elements. Calibration of denitrifying activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms in an extended ASM2d model

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study for the modelling and calibration of denitrifying activity of polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) in full-scale WWTPs that incorporate simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The convenience of using different yields under aerobic and anoxic conditions for modelling biological phosphorus removal processes with the ASM2d has been demonstrated. Electrocoagulation treatment of peat bog drainage water containing humic substances

Abstract Electrocoagulation (EC) treatment of 100 mg/L synthetic wastewater (SWW) containing humic acids was optimized (achieving 90% CODMn and 80% DOC removal efficiencies), after which real peat bog drainage waters (PBDWs) from three northern Finnish peat bogs were also treated. High pollutant removal efficiencies were achieved: Ptot, TS, and color could be removed completely, while Ntot, CODMn, and DOC/TOC removal efficiencies were in the range of 33–41%, 75–90%, and 62–75%, respectively. Interactions between calcium precipitation and the polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria metabolism

A sequencing batch reactor that is operated for biological phosphorus removal has been operated under different influent calcium concentrations to study the precipitation process and the possible effects of phosphorus precipitation in the biological phosphorus removal process. Four experiments were carried out under different influent calcium concentrations ranging from 10 to 90 g Ca m(-3). Superoxide-driven autocatalytic dark production of hydroxyl radicals in the presence of complexes of natural dissolved organic matter and iron.

Abstract We introduced superoxide as potassium superoxide (KO2) to artificial lake water containing dissolved organic matter (DOM) without or with introduced ferric iron complexes (DOM-Fe(III)), and monitored the production rate of hydroxyl radicals as well as changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of DOM. The introduction of KO2 decreased the absorption by DOM but increased the spectral slope coefficient of DOM more with complexed ferric Fe than without it. The behavior of a University of Cape Town (UCT) membrane bioreactor (MBR) system was investigated for use in biological nutrient removal from real wastewater. The pilot plant was in operation for a period of 165 days, during which an extensive data gathering campaign was conducted.
