Abstract In this paper, a piezoelectric based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system is proposed to detect skin/stiffener debonding and delamination cracks proper of laminated composite structures. The SHM system is analyzed by means of a boundary element code implemented in the framework of piezoelectricity. A simple interpretation of the effect of the polymer type on the properties of PMBs for road paving applications

Abstract The paper presents the results of the rheological characterisation of polymer-modified bitumen for paving applications. In order to find a simple interpretation of the influence of polymer type on the blends produced, in this study high density and low density polyethylene (PE) with different chemical properties were used, as well as ethylene-vinyl acetate. The chemical characteristics of the base bitumen and the polymers used were determined by means of SARA analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, FTIR, respectively. Coating fragmentation by branching cracks at large biaxial strain

The fragmentation behaviour of a thin brittle coating attached to a ductile substrate subjected to equibiaxial quasi-static in-plane tension is studied. The experimentally observed cracking patterns are related to repetitively branching coating cracks. The fragmentation process is modelled by the rate equation approach. It is established that fragmentation by branching cracks leads to a qualitatively different fragment distribution compared to binary fragmentation. The fragmentation model is applied to identify crack branching and coating/substrate stress transfer parameters.
Novel biosensoric devices based on molecular protein hetero-multilayer films

We have developed a novel concept for the modification of technical surfaces with molecularly well-organized layers of bioorganic components. A molecular construction set has been used to implement this concept which is based on molecularly stratified polyelectrolyte films as a structure decoupling protein layers from solid substrates. Utilizing this technology, one can start from a number of different substrates to obtain the same surface structures, on which protein hetero-multilayer films can be prepared to functionalize the interface for (potentially very different) purposes. Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) has been broadly used on heavily trafficked roads and motorways in the UK due to its known stability and durability. In this study, several sets of SMA mixtures were produced using different rubberised bitumens, including a Fischer–Tropsch wax pre-treated rubberised bitumen. Aging resistance of bio-epoxy jute-basalt hybrid composites as novel multilayer structures for cladding

Abstract Aging resistance of jute reinforced laminates is compared with two jute/basalt hybrid laminates prepared with different stacking sequences (i.e., sandwich and intercalated configuration). To this aim, composites are exposed to cyclic conditions comprising hygrothermal stress and UV radiation to promote an accelerated aging, for a period of 84 days. Specimens of each laminate are tested after 14, 28, 56 and 84 days, respectively. Quasi-static flexural tests, Charpy impact tests and dynamic mechanical tests are performed according to international ASTM and ISO standards.
