Immediately following fertilization the sea urchin egg enters a period of very rapid cell division that cleaves the egg cell into about one thousand proportionately smaller cells, which form the swimming blastula, i.e. a larval form that is less vulnerable to environmental injuries since it is capable of actively swimming away from them.

Reliable measures of plastic deformations for elastic plastic structures in shakedown conditions

A new formulation for evaluating reliable measures of the plastic deformations occurring in the transient phase of a structure in shakedown conditions is proposed. The structure is thought as constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material and subjected to a combination of fixed and cyclic loads. The proposed formulation consists in the search for the optimal plastic strain field that minimize a suitable objective function defining a strain energy measure related to the plastic strains at the shakedown limit. Influence of protecting devices on the optimal design of elastic plastic structures

The paper concerns the minimum volume design of structures constituted by elastic perfectly plastic material. The relevant optimal design problem is formulated on the grounds of a statical approach and two different resistance limits are considered: in particular, it is required that the optimal structure satisfies the elastic shakedown limit and the instantaneous collapse limit, imposing for each different condition a suitably chosen safety factor. Compensation of missing wedge effects with sequential statistical reconstruction in electron tomography.

Electron tomography (ET) of biological samples is used to study the organization and the structure of the whole cell and subcellular complexes in great detail. However, projections cannot be acquired over full tilt angle range with biological samples in electron microscopy. ET image reconstruction can be considered an ill-posed problem because of this missing information. This results in artifacts, seen as the loss of three-dimensional (3D) resolution in the reconstructed images. Rhogocytes are pore cells scattered among the connective tissue of different body parts of gastropods and other molluscs, with great variation in their number, shape and size. They are enveloped by a lamina of extracellular matrix. Their most characteristic feature is the "slit apparatus", local invaginations of the plasma membrane bridged by cytoplasmic bars, forming slits of ca. 20 nm width. A slit diaphragm creates a molecular sieve with permeation holes of 20×20 nm. EPR on Radiation-Induced Defects in SiO2

Continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy has been the technique of choice for the studies of radiation-induced defects in silica (SiO2) for 60 years, and has recently been expanded to include more sophisticated techniques such as high-frequency EPR, pulse electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and pulse electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) spectroscopy. Structural models of radiation-induced defects obtained from single-crystal EPR analyses of crystalline SiO2 (alfa-quartz) are often applicable to their respective analogues in amorphous silica (a-SiO2), although significant differences are common.
