Comparative study of the effect of gentamicin on the vestibulo-ocular and visual vestibulo-ocular reflexes in the cat.
1991
The ototoxic effect of an aminoglycoside, gentamicin, on the vestibular system was investigated in cats given daily doses of 40 mg/kg i.m. for 14 days. Periodically, measurements were made of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and visual vestibulo-ocular reflex (ViVOR) responses induced by rotatory stimuli at various frequencies from 0.0125 Hz to 0.8 Hz. After the cessation of drug administration, a progressively declining response to VOR stimuli continued, manifested by gain (ratio of peak response to peak stimulus amplitude) and phase relationships. The ViVOR was affected only in the gain measurements. The changes in the response amplitude (gain) were greater for the VOR than for the ViVOR…
Serological Evidence for Multiple Strains of Canine Norovirus in the UK Dog Population
2013
International audience; Noroviruses are associated with intestinal disease in humans, cows, pigs, mice, and, more recently, dogs. In 2007, the first canine norovirus (CNV) was identified and characterized in Italy. Subsequent studies have identified CNV in stools of dogs from Portugal, Greece, and the United States. To investigate the prevalence of CNV in the UK dog population, 228 canine stool samples were screened for CNV by qPCR, and 396 serum samples were screened for anti-CNV antibodies. qPCR of RNA extracted from canine stool samples did not reveal any CNV-positive samples, based on samples collected from diarrhoeic and control dogs in 2012-2013. CNV virus-like particles to three diff…
The effect of metals on condition and pathologies of European eel (Anguilla anguilla): in situ and laboratory experiments.
2011
Forty-nine wild eels (Anguilla anguilla) caught in the Albufera Lake (Spain), measuring 24.0-75.0 cm in length and 25.0-637.7 g in weight, were examined for metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn), condition (CI and HSI indices), as well as for diseases (Anguillicola infestation; bacterial infections). Total metal load significantly increased in eel liver tissue parallel to total length and body weight (log), while silvering females (W(B) > 200 g; L ≥ 500 mm) exhibited the highest amounts of Co, Cu, Hg, Se and Zn. Diverse effects may be expected in these big eels due to long-term metal exposure. In fact, IMBI (individual mean (multi-metal) bioaccumulation index) and copper load (…
The lineshape of the electronic spectrum of the green fluorescent protein chromophore, part I: gas phase.
2014
The vibronic spectra of the green fluorescent protein chromophore analogues p-hydroxybenzylidene-2,3-dimethylimidazolinone (HBDI) and 3,5-tert-butyl-HBDI (35Bu) are similar in the vacuum, but very different in water or ethanol. To understand this difference, we have computed the vibrationally resolved solution spectra of these chromophores, using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) to account for solvent effects on the (harmonic) potential energy surfaces (PES). In agreement with experiment, we found that the vibrational progression increases with the polarity of the solvent, but we could neither reproduce the broadening, nor the large difference between the absorption spectra of HBDI and…
PML nuclear body-residing proteins sequentially associate with HPV genome after infectious nuclear delivery.
2019
Subnuclear promyelocytic leukemia (PML) nuclear bodies (NBs) are targeted by many DNA viruses after nuclear delivery. PML protein is essential for formation of PML NBs. Sp100 and Small Ubiquitin-Like Modifier (SUMO) are also permanently residing within PML NBs. Often, large DNA viruses disassemble and reorganize PML NBs to counteract their intrinsic antiviral activity and support establishment of infection. However, human papillomavirus (HPV) requires PML protein to retain incoming viral DNA in the nucleus for subsequent efficient transcription. In contrast, Sp100 was identified as a restriction factor for HPV. These findings suggested that PML NBs are important regulators of early stages o…
Eccentric fixation measurements using visuoscopy and Macula Integrity Tester (MIT) in children with amblyopia
2021
The aim of the work was to compare measurements of eccentric fixation in children with amblyopia using two different methods, a traditional visuoscopy and MIT. Monocular fixation was evaluated using visuoscopy and MIT in 16 patients (from 5 to 9 years old). Measurements were started with the better seeing eye to compare the results obtained with the amblyopic eye. All study participants were selected with anisometropic and refractive amblyopia. Visuoscopy is simpler than MIT and less dependent on patient responses, so visioscopy can be used for young children who have not yet acquired verbal skills. Children over the age of 5 can more easily understand the MIT method and get more reliable r…
Adénocarcinome de la glande lacrymale dans un rétinoblastome bilatéral traité avec radiothérapie externe : à propos d’un cas
2011
This clinical case report describes the clinical findings and diagnosis of lacrimal gland adenocarcinoma that developed 20 years after external beam radiotherapy in the treatment of bilateral retinoblastoma. Visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus color photography, nuclear magnetic resonance, lateral orbitotomy and histological analysis are described.
<title>The perception of isoluminant coloured stimuli of amblyopic eye and defocused eye</title>
2008
In routine eye examination the visual acuity usually is determined using standard charts with black letters on a white background, however contrast and colour are important characteristics of visual perception. The purpose of research was to study the perception of isoluminant coloured stimuli in the cases of true and simulated amlyopia. We estimated difference in visual acuity with isoluminant coloured stimuli comparing to that for high contrast black-white stimuli for true amblyopia and simulated amblyopia. Tests were generated on computer screen. Visual acuity was detected using different charts in two ways: standard achromatic stimuli (black symbols on a white background) and isoluminan…
Temporal multiplexing with adaptive optics for simultaneous vision.
2016
We present and test a methodology for generating simultaneous vision with a deformable mirror that changed shape at 50 Hz between two vergences: 0 D (far vision) and −2.5 D (near vision). Different bifocal designs, including toric and combinations of spherical aberration, were simulated and assessed objectively. We found that typical corneal aberrations of a 60-year-old subject changes the shape of objective through-focus curves of a perfect bifocal lens. This methodology can be used to investigate subjective visual performance for different multifocal contact or intraocular lens designs.
Kosteneffektivitätsanalyse der Versorgung von Kataraktpatienten mit monofokalen Intraokularlinsen aus Sicht der Leistungserstatter
2003
BACKGROUND Data on the cost effectiveness of cataract surgery with respect to the German statutory health insurance system are hardly available. Hence the increase in visual acuity as primary efficacy endpoint, order of posterior capsule opacification as primary complication endpoint and direct cost for supplementation with monofocal intraocular lenses have been assessed via meta-analyses to evaluate the procedure's cost effectiveness from the perspective of the German statutory health insurance system. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using the medical internet database MEDLINE two meta-analyses on publications between 1995 and 2002 were carried out, one estimating the gained increase in visual acuity…
