Caliper navigation for craniotomy planning of convexity targets.

2021

Introduction A technique to localize a radiological target on the head convexity fast and with acceptable precision is sufficient for surgeries of superficial intracranial lesions, and of help in the setting of emergency surgery, computer navigation breakdown, limited resources and education. We present a caliper technique based on fundamental geometry, with inexpensive and globally available tools (conventional CT or MRI image viewer, calculator, caliper). Methods The distances of the radiological target from two landmarks (nasion and porus acusticus externus) are assessed with an image viewer and Pythagoras’ theorem. The two distances are then marked around the landmarks onto the head of…

Neural substrates for processing chemosensory information in snakes.

2002

Snakes interact with their chemical environment through their olfactory and vomeronasal systems. The present report summarizes advances on neural substrates for processing chemosensory information. First, the efferent and centrifugal afferent connections of the main and accessory olfactory bulbs were reinvestigated. Second, the afferent and efferent connections of the nucleus sphericus, the main target of the accessory olfactory bulb, were characterized. The nucleus sphericus gives rise to a very small projection to the hypothalamus, but it does project to other telencephalic structures where olfactory and vomeronasal information could converge. Third, the intra-amygdaloid circuitry and the…

Optimal pricing strategies in real-time electricity pricing environments: An Italian case study

2015

The energy market has changed radically over the last decade, mainly due to an increased penetration of renewable energies. Now the end users have directly access to the energy market and can actively take part to the electricity market. Electricity customers can indeed modify their behavior through Demand Response (DR), namely by means of pricing strategies that support a change in the end-users habits. This can be accomplished through a 'loads aggregator', a third party that collects the requests and signals for Active Demand-based services coming from the markets and the different power system participants. This paper describes a new framework able to optimally select the real-time prici…

Hepatocellular carcinoma after thorotrast exposure: establishment of a new cell line (Mz-Hep-1).

1985

A human hepatoma cell line, associated with thorotrast exposure, from an hepatitis B marker-negative patient was established as a permanent cell line (Mz-Hep-1) in tissue culture. Histology of the primary tumor, as well as phase contrast, transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the cultured cells showed typical characteristics of liver cells. Mz-Hep-1 cells secreted complement components (C2, C3, C4), carcinoembryonic antigen, lactate dehydrogenase, chymotrypsin, haptoglobin and retinol-binding protein and expressed HLA-, transferrin-, blood group B-related determinants and complement component C5 and carcinoembryonic antigen on their cell surface. Mz-Hep-1 cells represent the firs…

Possible protective role for C-reactive protein in atherogenesis: complement activation by modified lipoproteins halts before detrimental terminal se…

2004

Background—Previous work indicated that enzymatically remodeled LDL (E-LDL) might activate complement in atherosclerotic lesions via a C-reactive protein (CRP)–dependent and CRP-independent pathway. We sought to substantiate this contention and determine whether both pathways drive the sequence to completion. Methods and Results—E-LDL was prepared by sequential treatment of LDL with a protease and cholesteryl esterase. Trypsin, proteinase K, cathepsin H, or plasmin was used with similar results. Functional tests were used to assess total complement hemolytic activity, and immunoassays were used to demonstrate C3 cleavage and to quantify C3a, C4a, C5a, and C5b-9. E-LDL preparations activated …

Functional size of complement and perforin pores compared by confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence microphotolysis

1991

Abstract Confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence microphotolysis (also referred to as fluorescence photobleaching recovery) were employed to study the transport of hydrophilic fluorescent tracers through complement and perforin pores. By optimizing the confocal effect it was possible to determine the exclusion limit of the pores in situ, i.e. without separation of cells and tracer solution. Single-cell flux measurements by fluorescence microphotolysis yielded information on the sample population distribution of flux rates. By these means a direct comparison of complement and perforin pores was made in sheep erythrocyte membranes. In accordance with previous studies employing a v…

Funkcje Prezydenta Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej w odniesieniu do praktyki politycznej

2022

Construction of decision support system in business design based on integration of information technology

2016

In an increasingly competitive environment the successful functioning of any business requires continuous improvement of services, expanding the range of products and range of services, standardization, and implementation of new busines ideas, establishment and dissemination of innovative solutions on the market. The implementation of such measures were carried out in a well-developed business projects. Automating business processes often requires the organization of various programs, which creates a problem of integration. The paper attempts to organizations handling business processes through the integration of various software tools. One of the major component due implementing business p…

Business Process Models and Information System Usability

2015

Abstract The paper describes the use of business process models for effective managing of information system execution processes and transparent representation of execution statuses. Contrary to traditional approaches where business process models are used only in the initial stages of information system development, the proposed approach suggests direct utilization of business process models during the use of information systems. Information system usability can be improved by using new means of representation, and business process models can serve as an efficient way to visualize execution processes in information systems.

Complement proteins regulating macrophage polarisation on biomaterials

2019

[EN] One of the events occurring when a biomaterial is implanted in an host is the protein deposition onto its surface, which might regulate cell responses. When a biomaterial displays a compromised biocompatibility, distinct complement pathways can be activated to produce a foreign body reaction. In this article, we have designed different types of biomaterial surfaces to study the inflammation process. Here, we used different concentrations of (3-glycidoxypropyl)-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), an organically-modified alkoxysilane as a precursor for the synthesis of various types of sol-gel materials functionalizing coatings for titanium implants to regulate biological responses. Our results sh…
