Lights and shadows of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in acute myocarditis

2016

Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered a primary tool for the diagnosis of acute myocarditis, due to its unique potential for non-invasive identification of the various hallmarks of the inflammatory response, with relevant impact on patient management and prognosis. Nonetheless, a marked variation in sensitivity and negative predictive value has been reported in the literature, reflecting the intrinsic drawbacks of current diagnostic criteria, which are based mainly on the use of conventional CMR pulse sequences. As a consequence, a negative exam cannot reliably exclude the diagnosis, especially in patients who do not present an infarct-like onset of disease. The introduction of new…

Laser spectroscopy of francium isotopes at the borders of the region of reflection asymmetry

2014

The magnetic dipole moments and changes in mean-square charge radii of the neutron-rich $^{218m,219,229,231}\text{Fr}$ isotopes were measured with the newly-installed Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) beam line at ISOLDE, CERN, probing the $7s~^{2}S_{1/2}$ to $8p~^{2}P_{3/2}$ atomic transition. The $\delta\langle r^{2}\rangle^{A,221}$ values for $^{218m,219}\text{Fr}$ and $^{229,231}\text{Fr}$ follow the observed increasing slope of the charge radii beyond $N~=~126$. The charge radii odd-even staggering in this neutron-rich region is discussed, showing that $^{220}\text{Fr}$ has a weakly inverted odd-even staggering while $^{228}\text{Fr}$ has normal staggering. This sugges…

Adsorption of dissolved organic matter on clay minerals as assessed by infra-red, CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy and low field T1 NMR relaxometry

2011

Abstract Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a very important environmental constituent due to its role in controlling factors for soil formation, mineral weathering and pollutant transport in the environment. Prediction of DOM physical–chemical properties is achieved by studying its chemical structure and spatial conformation. In the present study, dissolved organic matter extracted from compost obtained from the organic fraction of urban wastes (DOM-P) has been analysed by FT-IR, CPMAS 13C NMR spectroscopy and 1H T1 NMR relaxometry with fast field cycling (FFC) setup. While the first two spectroscopic techniques revealed the chemical changes of dissolved organic matter after adsorption eith…

Effects of ions on water structure: a low-field (1) H T1 NMR relaxometry approach

2014

Aqueous salt solutions play an important role in nature because of their effects on environmental biogeochemical processes and on structural properties of biomolecules. Upon dissolution, salts split in ions that are solvated. Water in hydration shells is subjected to molecular motions that can be monitored by (1) H T1 NMR relaxometry. This technique allowed the evaluation of the nature of the interactions between water and ions via variable temperature experiments. Examination of relaxometry properties of aqueous solutions at variable salt concentrations allowed acknowledgement of the role played by ions in either structuring or destructuring water aggregates. A mathematical model has been …

Survival risk factors in T1G3 non-muscle-invasive (NMI) bladder cancer consevatively treated. Long term results.

2008

Introduction: The most relevant risk factor in T1G3 NMI transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCCB) is the presence of Tis. The long term results of conservative management still are a matter of controversy. The role of BCG in preventing progression and death in this category of NMI TCCB is not definitely proved. The published experiences of conservative treatment of high risk TCCB often include unselected patients, small numbers and short follow-up. Immediate radical cystectomy is advocated by many urologists. Objectives: The aim of the study is to identify the survival risk factors in 236 selected patients conservatively treated. Methods: Between January 1976 and December 2005, 236 …

Prognostic Factors And Risk Groups In T1g3 Patients Initially Treated With Bcg: Results Of A Multicenter Retrospective Series In 2530 Patients

2013

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The impact of prognostic factors in T1G3 patients (pts) is critical for proper treatment decision making, however most available data are from small series of pts. The aim of the current study is to assess prognostic factors in a large group of pts who received BCG as initial treatment of T1G3 tumours and identify a subgroup of high risk pts who should be considered for early cystectomy. METHODS: Individual pt data were collected for 2530 pts from 23 centers who received induction or maintenance BCG between 1990 and 2008. Using Cox regression analysis, the prognostic importance of the following variables were assessed for time to recurrence, progression to muscl…

T1HG Bladder Tumours: So Many Papers, Do We Need Them? Yes, We Do!

2009

“How many roads a man must walk on….” and how many papers we must read and write… to put down the final word on the appropriate management of high risk NMI-BC. Although it is more than 20 years that we take notice of promises on biological markers predictive of the behaviour of NMI-BC, till today we can only base our decisions on clinical and pathological data. Consequently, we need exchange of experiences and reports on the outcome of these patients. The aim of the treatment of T1 bladder tumours is to minimize mortality while assuring reduced morbidity and good quality of life. A conservative approach is, obviously, not applicable to all T1HG tumours. We need to identify unequivocal selec…
