Note citotassonomiche sul genere Thapsia L. (Apiaceae)

2008

This study aims to clarify the taxonomic states and relations within the genus Thapsia from the Mediterranean area, with particular interest to the populations growing in Sicily. The results of morphological and karyological investigations on living plants, combined with herbarium surveys and literature data, allowed us to define an updated taxonomic profile of the genus Thapsia, with the description of a new species from the island of Lampedusa (SW Sicily), named T. pelagica. Moreover a new taxonomic combination is proposed for the populations of Peloritani Mts. (NE Sicily), which are here treated as subspecies messanensis of T. garganica.

Modeling the insect mushroom bodies: application to a delayed match-to-sample task.

2013

Despite their small brains, insects show advanced capabilities in learning and task solving. Flies, honeybees and ants are becoming a reference point in neuroscience and a main source of inspiration for autonomous robot design issues and control algorithms. In particular, honeybees demonstrate to be able to autonomously abstract complex associations and apply them in tasks involving different sensory modalities within the insect brain. Mushroom Bodies (MBs) are worthy of primary attention for understanding memory and learning functions in insects. In fact, even if their main role regards olfactory conditioning, they are involved in many behavioral achievements and learning capabilities, as …

Ionic liquids/[bmim][N3] mixtures: promising media for the synthesis of aryl azides by SNAr

2008

The nucleophilic aromatic substitution of some activated aryl or heteroaryl halides has been performed in ionic liquid solution, using the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium azide as a nucleophile. The reaction course was studied varying the structures of both substrates and ionic liquids. In particular, in the latter case, the reaction of 2-bromo-5-nitrothiophene was carried out in five different ionic liquids ([bmim][BF 4], [bmim][PF 6], [bmim][NTf 2], [bm 2im][NTf 2], and [bmpyrr][NTf 2]). Finally, for all the substrates considered, a comparison with data obtained in MeOH solution in the presence of NaN 3 was also performed. Data collected indicate that in some cases it is possible to obtain ar…

Podstawowe samowartościowanie - walidacja polskiej wersji skali do pomiaru Core Self-Evaluations

2017

Praca przedstawia walidację polskiej wersji skali do pomiaru podstawowego samowartościowania (Core Self-Evaluations – CSES; Judge, Erez, Bono i Thorensen, 2003). Podstawowe samowartościowanie to poglądy danej osoby, dotyczące jej skuteczności, zdolności, wiary we własne siły i pozytywnego nastawienia do siebie i świata.

Gaze position reveals impaired attentional shift during visual word recognition in dysfluent readers

2014

Effects reflecting serial within-word processing are frequently found in pseudo- and non-word recognition tasks not only among fluent, but especially among dyslexic readers. However, the time course and locus of these serial within-word processing effects in the cognitive hierarchy (i.e., orthographic, phonological, lexical) have remained elusive. We studied whether a subject’s eye movements during a lexical decision task would provide information about the temporal dynamics of serial within-word processing. We assumed that if there is serial within-word processing proceeding from left to right, items with informative beginnings would attract the gaze position and (micro-)saccadic eye movem…

The impact of a concurrent motor task on auditory and visual temporal discrimination tasks

2016

Previous studies have shown the presence of an interference effect on temporal perception when participants are required to simultaneously execute a nontemporal task. Such interference likely has an attentional source. In the present work, a temporal discrimination task was performed alone or together with a self-paced finger-tapping task used as concurrent, nontemporal task. Temporal durations were presented in either the visual or the auditory modality, and two standard durations (500 and 1, 500 ms) were used. For each experimental condition, the participant’s threshold was estimated and analyzed. The mean Weber fraction was higher in the visual than in the auditory modality, but only for…

How is Visual Recognition Entrained by Auditory Background Rhythms?

2014

AbstractRecent studies have reported that the oscillations of auditory attention entrained by a background rhythmic sequence can influence performance in visual recognition tasks. We have designed an experimental paradigm in which a visual item (either a bisyllabic word or a familiar face) is displayed on screen in two consecutive parts while a musical rhythm is played in the background. Depending on the timing conditions, the first or the second part of the item could be presented either in-synchrony or out-of-synchrony with the beats of the auditory rhythm. In a first series of experiments, participants performed a lexical decision task on bisyllabic 5-letter strings. Results show that wh…
