Citizenship Education at the Republican Schools in France: Comprehensive Review and Teachers' Points of View
2019
Citizenship Education at the Republican Schools in France: Comprehensive Review and Teachers' Points of View This thesis deals with citizenship education in France, a subject that has been on the agenda for some thirty years and the object of intense debates, especially in a national community deeply shocked by recent terrorist attacks. As there are but few studies on the subject, especially from an empirical perspective (Bozec, 2016), our objective is a comprehensive review of citizenship education in France. We explore how the subject is conceived officially and integrates national curricula as well as how it is implemented at school. In fact, we seek to answer the question: how is citize…

Learning by Teaching and Assessing: A Teaching Experience
2015
This chapter describes a teaching experience whereby students learnt by teaching and assessing other students. A group of students was tasked with explaining a topic from the course and preparing an exam on that topic. The remaining students in the class completed a questionnaire to measure their satisfaction. They also completed an online test on the topic following the presentation by their peers. Assessment was based on a win-win strategy because the average mark on the test counted towards the final assessment of the students who gave the presentation. The methodology allows students to study content in greater depth level and develop skills like responsibility, critical analysis and em…
A Descriptive Case Analysis of Instructional Teaching Practices in Finnish Preschool Classrooms
2013
This study examined the diversity of teaching practices to illuminate the qualitative variety of instructional teaching practices among preschool teachers. Further, teachers' self-rated educational goals were explored to complement the multifaceted nature of preschool teachers' instructional teaching practices. The study was carried out as a case study. The cases were used to describe the qualitative variety of Finnish preschool teachers' instructional practices in authentic classroom situations among groups of 6-year-old children. The authors' previous study revealed four distinct latent profiles of teaching practices in preschool classrooms based on 49 observed preschool teachers, using t…

Abstract Understanding the factors related to teacher burnout helps in creating schools which foster teachers’ job satisfaction and the delivery of high-quality education. Several associations between teacher burnout and the background variables were observed …
Live Action Role Play and the Development of Teacher Competences: Evaluation of “Everyday Life in the Classroom”
2016
Building on Dörner’s (1996) theory of complex problem-solving, a learning scenario for teacher students was created and tested. Classroom management is interpreted as a complex problem, which requires the integration of competing interests and tackling multiple, simultaneous tasks under time pressure and with limited information. In addition, rising emotions are likely to impede thinking and the quality of decision-making. To prepare student teachers to understand and reflect the complex problem-solving challenges inherent in classroom management, we developed the live action role play “Everyday Life in the Classroom” which was embedded in a seminar structure to guide the development of ana…

Good Servants but Poor Masters: On the Important Role of Textbooks in Teaching English Pronunciation
2014
Textbooks are the most commonly used teaching materials among European EFL teachers (Henderson et al., 2012), and it is undeniable that they have a central role in foreign language teaching overall. Scholars across time have claimed that the role of textbooks cannot be overestimated: textbooks determine a major part of classroom teaching (see Sobkowiak, 2012). This paper discusses the influence of textbooks in English pronunciation teaching in an EFL environment. It presents a study in which the occurrence of four typical pronunciation teaching task types and four pronunciation teaching topics were analysed in three data sources: textbooks, classroom observations, and learner interviews. Th…
