The translatability into Italian of the German stance marking modal particles wohl, eben and ja. Between epistemicity and evidentiality

Contrary to Italian and many other languages, German has a linguistic means to mark the speaker’s stance: the so-called modal particles, such as wohl, eben and ja. This paper examines their occurrence in a German novel and their possible translations in its Italian version. It analyses their complex meaning arising from the intertwined relations between speaker – hearer – state of affairs as the three key entities of stance they mark and the textual or situational context, concluding that they have only covert epistemic and evidential features. The Syntax–Pragmatics Interface in Heritage Languages: The Use of anche (“Also”) in German Heritage Speakers of Italian

This paper deals with the use of anche (“also”) by German heritage speakers of Italian (“IHSs”). Previous research showed that anche and its German counterpart auch share many features but also display language-specific characteristics. According to previous research on bilingualism, heritage speakers show cross-linguistic influence (“CLI”) when a linguistic phenomenon is at the syntax–pragmatics interface and there is a partial overlap in the two languages at stake. Therefore, we expect the use of anche in IHSs to be influenced by CLI. By analysing data from a semi-spontaneous corpus, we investigate the production of anche in order to understand which factors shape the grammar of the IHSs.…
Microvariation in the Distribution of Resumptive Pronouns in the Left Dislocation Construction in Two Tyrolean Dialects of Northern Italy

In this paper we document a so-far neglected case of microvariation involving resumptive pronouns in the left-dislocation construction in Meranese, spoken in South Tyrol, and Mòcheno, spoken in the Fersina valley (Trentino). While in standard German resumptive elements in this construction belong to the class of D-pronouns, the two Tyrolean dialects considered in the paper exhibit, as resumptive pronouns, both (i) D-pronouns and (ii) pronominal usages of the distal demonstrative formed by the definite article (D) and sèll corresponding to ‘that one’. Dealing with missing participants in the opening phases of a videoconference

Abstract The paper explores the social interaction that takes place during the initial phases of videoconferences. The focus is on the problem of absent participants, which is often considered a reason for delaying the official beginning of the meeting. One of the resources that the participants have is to reach the absent participant by cellphone. We observed a recurrent pattern of action whereby one of the participants disengages from the video meeting to reach the missing person by phone. Cimbrian is a German(ic) minority language which has long been in contact with Romance varieties in the Northeast of Italy and represents an ideal object of analysis for investigating some specific issues in language contact, such as the borrowing of functional words. Der Beitrag fokussiert sich auf die Mystifizierung der paracelsisichen Gedanken, der Figur von Paracelsus selbst sowie des religiösen Diskurses und von manchen Debatten des 16. Jahrhunderst durch Guido Erwin Kolbenheyer. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die Herausbildung des "Andersartigen", der im Kontext einer nationalistischen und fremdenfeindlichen Gesinnug zum Inbegriff einer überlegenen pangermanischen Identität aufgefasst wird.

The book contains selected papers by L. v. Ranke, most of them for the first time translated into Italian. In his Preface F. Tessitore explains Ranke’s role in the history of culture. The Introduction of editor and translator sheds light upon the link between Ranke’s philosophy of State and the theory of astetics of Goethe’s and Kant’s era. The focus on this relation enables the reader to be aware of the meaning of Ranke’s famous “obiectivism”.
